Did a Helmet Change Your Baby's Personality??

Hi mamas!

My sweet baby boy has been fitted for a helmet to correct his flat spot. He is going to be exactly 5 months old when he gets it. He is a very sweet, chatty, happy little guy. They have assured us that if he is a happy baby now, he will be a happy baby in the helmet. I just wanted to hear from any fellow mamas out there that have had experience with having a baby in a helmet. What was your experience like? Did your baby seem to mind wearing it? Did his/her personality change? Did it do a good job correcting the assymetry? Thanks for any feedback!!

What can I do next?

I've cared for 3 children who've worn helmets over the past 2 years and did not see any personality change, other than those that simply come with growing older. None of them seemed to even notice the helmet or care whether it was on or off. In two cases, the babies emerged from their helmets with almost perfectly shaped heads, only minor droopiness of the eyes remained from facial bones that shifted as the head flattened. My most recent child to wear a helmet has had issues with the helmet not fitting snuggly for the entire time she's worn it (about 3 months now). The "doctor" that is fitting her helmet isn't doing a good job, in my opinion, and it moves enough that she gets raw spots on her head and we're having to readjust it about 6 times a day. With the other two, there was no readjustment needed during the day and there were no issues with shifting or rubbing. Good luck!

My daughter was diagnosed with saggital craniosynostosis at 4m and had surgery to correct it. She was fitted with a helmet a week later and wore it for about 10m. Her personality never changed, she was a ham before and a ham during and is still a ham today. At first she didn't like putting it on and would fight us, but once it was on she never even noticed it was on. Towards the end of her treatment she did fight putting it on even more and we struggled with getting it on her daily, but again, never really noticed it once it was on. Don't worry, your little one will definitely be just fine with it. And it definitely does help! Good luck!

No, it won't make any personality difference, aside from maybe making him a little cranky if he doesn't like it.

However, my family doc says that all babies get a little flat spot when they're too little to sit up and it will correct itself when they are upright more often. They are so expensive and hot and can be a pain, so I wouldn't get one unless you're sure he really needs it. He'll be sitting up and even crawling pretty soon, so his head should start rounding out.

Good luck with it.
