Curious About Giving Drinks to My Baby

In the endless effort to lose my baby weight, I take long walk with my 8 month old daughter, Grace. By the time we get back I am tired and ready for the biggest glass of water I can find. I was wondering if I need to give my baby some water or juice? I don't want to dehydrate her!

What can I do next?

I say yes to water...it is a great habit to start now. I too dilute juice when given ,however ,my daughter now asks for water . I gave her water in a bottle when she was a baby. I am thirsty, so I assume she is too! V.

I started giving my daughter water at a month old last summer when it was super hot out and we walked anywhere. at first she wasnt too happy with it but still drank a little.. its more of a not used to thing than not liking. juice is ok but you dont want her to get into a habit of grabing something sweet when she is thirsty. i try to only give lily juice with meals and water the rest of the time in her sippy. infact sometimes when she is eating she will just toss the cup a few times or shake her head no till i get the clue and replace it with water.. its her favorite drink over formula.. lol.. but yea.. basically, she wont be as thirsty as you but she will still get hot in the stroller.. and plus sometimes you just get a little extra thirsty.. i recommend always having a sippy with water in the diaper bag. the gerber sippy cup with the longer softer spout was mentioned earlier and i too recomend it, lily couldnt figure out how to use one till she got one of those. kinda long but i hope it helps

Our ped. told us at my son's 6 month visit (he's 7 and a half mos now) that it was fine to give him either juice or water..even watered down juice if he'll have it. He generally doesn't have a preference to which, but he won't drink watered down juice. So what I generally do is give him sips of juice or water, alternating daily. If we go out in the heat, I always bring him nice cool water, but not too cold. We tried several sippy cups, and he just despises them and would rather take drinks out of our cups. So we bought him his own Spongebob sports cup with the pop-up spout on top, and he's learning to use that quite well. He still takes plenty of formula and eats well, so I don't think there's anything wrong with giving liquids, and obviously neither does our ped. because she recommended it. I don't shove all 4 ounces down him every day though..I just keep it available and offer it to him occasionally. He takes it when he wants a drink, and won't if he doesn't.

Both the AAP and the WHO say that you can start babies on water and/or diluted juice at 6 months (only breast milk and formula until then). A sippy cup is the cleaner way to do it, but if you don't mind her wearing a damp shirt, let her drink form a water bottle anytime you do through out your walk!
Enjoy the exercise!

If she will drink water, let her have it. Water is always good for you, no matter what your age:)
Most babies don't like plain water all that much though, so don't expect her to drink a lot. I used to add extra water to her bottles. That is also an alternative if you are worried about dehydration.

Babies don't need water like us adults or other children. You can give them water but limit it. What I would do is give her like a 4 oz bottle or sippy cup with 1/2 water and 1/2 juice. Hope this helps.

Giving either of those is fine. My little boy liked (and still does) apple juice. He never liked the juice diluted so I just gave it to him straight and he did fine with it.

please give your daughter some WATER! ALL LIVING THINGS NEED WATER. I AM A MOTHER OF 3 - GAVE WATER TO ALL OF THEM FROM DAY 1! GIVE HER NURSERY WATER AS LONG AS SHE IS ON FORMULA.

by 8 months she can have juice and water. just make sure she is still getting the recommended amount of formula for her age also. most peds and books say not to give more than 4 oz of juice a day.

My daughter is 9 months. I have personally chosen to stay away from juice to prevent tooth deacy, although I brush her teeth twice a day with a baby (flouride free) toothpaste.
She enjoys water, she rejected it at first but I ALWAYS have a bottle of water next to me, she wants to immitate everything I do so I give her a sip here and there and now she drinks water with her meals. Babies do get thirsty, especially after a hot walk or a long cry...
I would always adivce that you check with ur Dr. I started giving my baby girl water since an early age cos she had a lot of constipation and it helped to give her 1oz a day...

Happy holiday!

If she's thirsty she will let you know...She's not exerting alot of energy sitting in the stroller so she won't be as thirsty as you. However, if you feel that she is thirsty then give her alittle water with a little juice in it but in a sippy cup that way she wont drink a lot...Or if it's close to her next feeding then give her a bottle...

Hi L.,
I have always given our son water or watered down OJ, our ped. has always said that juice was empty calories, so I've always tried to stay away from the juices. I could be wrong, but that is what I've been doing.
Good luck :-)

Your instincts are right. Your baby can get dehydrated after being outside on a warm day. I recommend giving her a bottle of water in her stroller before you even start your walk. If she's thirsty she'll drink, if not, then she won't.

I wouldn't give her juice yet because the empty calories could interfer with her appetite and slow her growth. Wait until she's about a year old and then only a few diluted ounces a day.

Think about introducing a sippy cup. My son took the soft spout type from Gerber at 10 months old.
