Chemical Pregnancy

I went to my obgyn for a different health issue, but just to humor my doctor, she asked me to get a pregnancy test. The test came back with a dark line and a faint line, we waited for a few minutes and the lines stayed the same.
So, I got a blood test, she told me that I have a blood level of 30, but to just take another blood test Monday to find out for sure if it doubles or not.
I have been spotting close to a month now and that was the issue that I came in for, possibly to get a new pill and to see why I've been bleeding/spotting for an irregular time.
I got my uterus and pap smear checked also, she said good news, if I'm possibly pregnant, its not ectopic. She didn't say if I was pregnant or having a miscarriage, hence another blood test.

My concerns are, since I didn't know I might be pregnant, I've had a few sips of scotch, a mojito, and mimosa, dyed my hair twice, been taking my pill, and a pro-omega Vitamin D supplement since then. I just saw my obgyn, 3/6. I don't even know how many weeks I am, but it seems like I'm really early.

Last few times I've had sex were on: 1/14, 2/13, and 2/20. If its the last two dates, I'd be just barely 3 weeks. If its 1/14, I would be 7 weeks. I'm still spotting which is a sign of an early pregnancy and miscarriage.

My concerns are, would my possible baby, be affected by my barely-mild drinking, birth control pill, supplement, and hair dying?

Please help.

So What Happened?

Hello everyone,

Thanks for answering my question.
I am relieved, when I found out the news, please don't judge me, but I was so scared and unprepared that I had found out I was pregnant. Turns out, I had a very early miscarriage. I was 4-5 weeks, I didn't need to get an ultrasound. I had done the urine test and first blood test last Thursday, and another blood test Monday. The results were that my blood levels went down significantly.

My partner, seems like he's also relieved, but he tells me, relieved for me. Which is another question I can ask later on.

A few sips of alcohol are no big deal-just stop drinking to be safe. Hair dying - I dyed my hair through my whole pregnancy with my midwife's blessing.

From a biologist's perspective, In the very first few weeks, there is no placenta because it's not formed yet, and thus there is no exchange of nutrients (or other stuff) through the blood vessels yet. So, very little that you do affects embryo this early.

Of course, now that you do know (or will know soon), you can talk to your OB what habits to change going forward, so that when that placenta is up and running, your baby is getting all good stuff.

Many people do a lot of things, worse than that, before they discover they are pregnant. Chances are, your baby will be fine. Just stop doing that stuff until you know for sure. I wouldn't worry about dying your hair.

Congrats if you are!

I went out for sushi and sake bombs three days before I found out I was pregnant with my first. I went to a hockey game (mandatory 3 beers, 1 per period) and to a bar afterwards (2-3 more beers) about a week before I found out I was pregnant with my second. I felt really guilty about both, but no negative effects. With both I found out around 6-7 weeks, so I think my drinking was early enough not to get through to the little guys. I know it is stressful, but you can't change the past, just focus on staying healthy now. I hope you get some answers soon, and that everything turns out as you are hoping.

How confusing for you! So sorry you are going through this. I wouldn't worry about that small amount of alcohol - it's really so very little. Even if you suddenly remember another drink on another day, it's not going to make that much of a difference - try not to sweat that out. Hair dye is not a problem - even women hairdressers who work with those chemicals all the time have healthy babies. The supplement is not doing you much good since it's not comprehensive so it's probably a waste of your money, but by the same token it's not going to do any harm to a fetus. Vitamin pills (and all other pills) are only absorbed 15-30% anyway, so the rest is eliminated. (There have been plenty of studies on this.) So if it's not going into your body's cells, it's certainly not going to cross a placenta. There are other supplements you can safely take for yourself as well as a prenatal that will have far greater absorption and benefit, and there is a lot of science on the side of a new natural peptide that sets us up for better health/prevention especially in babies/children. I've been going to seminars on this and it's very exciting to see what can happen when our bodies are repaired. It's not widely available because only one company has been given the rights to it - they want to be sure it's responsibly manufactured and distributed, and most companies cannot guarantee that.

Your birth control pill, if it' s such a low dose that you are spotting and can get pregnant, is of very limited effect on a fetus.

I'm sure you are more concerned about the bleeding - a lot of women have minor bleeding during the early stages of pregnancy, and a lot have breakthrough bleeding on birth control pills. You did the right thing by getting checked out by your doctor. If you are pregnant and having signs of miscarriage, that's upsetting of course. You can't do anything about it except wait - that's also upsetting. You should adjust your eating and activities as if you are pregnant - no drinking or smoking - but otherwise your normal activities (exercise, eating, recreation, etc.) are fine. If the doctor tells you to avoid a lot of heavy lifting or anything like that, fine. Otherwise, go about your life. Hopefully you will have good answers soon.

Very likely your activities would not be a danger to a pregnancy, but you haven't confirmed that you are pregnant, yet. I experienced two "faint line" pregnancy tests and they both ended in early miscarriages (one 3 days after the test, one at about 8 weeks). I had one miscarriage (I've had a total of 3) where I spotted for 3 months and then finally had a D&C. I was always told that there is nothing you can do to cause or prevent a miscarriage, so I would just try your best to not worry until your doctor can confirm what is happening.

No. These things aren't going to hurt your baby.

Start pregnancy vitamins tomorrow. You need folic acid to prevent neural tube defects. So many women miss that important window because they don't know they're pregnant in time. Spina bifida and some cleft palates are caused by a lack of folic acid.
