Hey, friends,

Now that the weather/wind has gotten colder, my 16-month-old has developed some very chapped lips. Any recommendations on what to use for relief?

What can I do next?

What I did was to melt beeswax and oil together - olive oil is good. Just put them in an open jar and put the jar in a pan of water. Heat just until the beeswax melts. When it cools off you have a balm. Then put the lid on the jar - easy. You can also add essential oils if you want to. If the consistency isn't right, you can melt it down again and add more oil or wax.

My doctor recommended Aquaphor - we have a big tub of it and it has lasted for 2 years - my daughter gets chapped cheeks from using a pacifier and my son chews on his lips. The Aquaphor really helps and a tub lasts a long time! With daily use for 2 years it's still 2/3 full. It is great - also works for my son's occasional hives and sore noses during colds! And it has no flavor so they aren't tempted to eat it off their lips!

Johnson's Soothing Naturals line has a "soothe and protect" balm stick that is great for protecting cheeks and lips and is made for babies. I occasionally use it for myself, too. It works great. You can find it at Babies R Us or probably anywhere that has a good selection of baby products.

Aquaphor- you can get it almost anywhere, Target, pharmacies etc. Works on anything chapped- in the winter I put it on my boys faces before going outside and a night if needed.

Good luck!

Do you still have any nipple ointment from breastfeeding (if you breastfed)? That is really good for healing sensitive skin, and it's supposed to be safe for babies to ingest. I've been thinking of trying that with my baby.

I actually found some cheek and lip moisturizer in the baby aisle at Target. It is called Boudreaux's Baby Kisses.

Chapped lips are an early sign of dehydration. If your babe is getting enough liquids, it should help the lips!

Vaseline or any chapstick will do

I would use plain Vaseline. Anything with flavor will encourage him to lick his lips, making it worse.

I used lanolin on my kids when they were babies and then Burt's Bees lip balm once they got a little older. I'd avoid anything petroleum based (Vaseline) and anything containing Phenol.

Lansinoh - medically purified lanolin, in the breastfeeding aisle at Target. Intended to put on sore nipples, but it's amazing stuff, I keep it around all the time, it cures any kind of dry skin, comes out of clothes in the wash, and your kid can eat it off their face or hands without any problems. It's pretty goopy (my 4-year-old calls it "goopy stuff"), but man, it works.

We also use lanolin. It works really great, and I figure that if it's safe for a newborn to nurse over, it's safe for my toddler's lips.

Baby Aquaphor is the best (in my humble opinion). It's great for baby's whole body- including little lips. I cover my girls in it after each bath and I also use it on my own lips and hands every night before I go to bed. I absolutely love this stuff. It was recommended by our Ped, too. Good luck!

Emu Oil. It is wonderful and can be purchased at many health food/supplement stores or on line. Unfortunately, most over the counter products for chapped lips/skin are petroleum based and simply act to protect areas from further chapping. They don't necessarily help restore the moisture. However, the Emu Oil works WONDERFULLY (and quite quickly). It is a bit more expensive than many remedies, but the oil has a wide array of uses, lasts a good long time (as you only need use it sparingly) and is quite worth it.

Good luck.
