I am very much for doing this job myself with my Bisselll..........However...

Being that you are newly moving in.......I might have them professionally done before you move anything inside.

That said, I have a Bissell Pro Heat and I use it for my carpets at home. We LOVE this machine.

I do not like Rug Dr (or the pros for that matter) because those machines are dirty and I don't want someone else's dirt in my carpet. That is why I have a Bissell that has only been used on MY dirt.

There's always accidents with pets - I would go with a professional steam cleaning company. Some advertise on Craigslist (only go with a licensed co.).

We have a great guy in CA so I can't give you a referral but he uses hot water and steams the carpet at somewhere around 200 degrees. It does a great job of cleaning the carpets and tile. You'd be amazed at all the old soap residue you can pull out of carpet with some hot water. Its the soapy residue left behind that causes the carpets to get dirty easier. The dirt sticks to the soap.

I've had carpets cleaned with a wet method as well as a dry method. The dry way seemed like they had not even been cleaned so we'll never do that again. The wet method was not steam cleaning, but something that took out all the stains and we could walk on it immediately. Plus, the solution was safe enough to drink so okay for kids and pets.

We bought a foreclosed home in October and the previous owners had 5 pit bulls and 3 cats. We bought a Rug Doctor from a pawn shop. I vacuumed the entire house, then sprayed Oxi Stain Remover (the same stuff I use on laundry). I waited an hour and then started shampooing. I did get good results! There were some spots that simply weren't coming out.

However, we just replaced the carpet, and OMG when we ripped out the old carpet I was disgusted to see what my son (and us) has been playing on! There were so many stains soaked into the carpet and padding from the animals that it was miserable!

**Keep in mind, the home was foreclosed on and the people lived like slobs because they knew they were losing the house. For example: when we saw the house for the first time we thought the carpet in the living room was beige. When we vacuumed it we were shocked to discover that under all of the animal hair, the carpet was burgundy!

Before you put any furniture into it, have your carpets done if you want it professionally done. I do mine myself every few mos w/my Bissel... just hot water in the tank, no soap. Soap attracts dirt & makes you have to clean it more often. A friend who has his own carpet cleaning business in Indiana taught me that. He uses minimal soap in his machines & the carpets look great for a long time. I think I'd have them professionally done before move in & ask for the pet treatment that's not deodorizer. It costs more but it gets the stains up instead of de-smelling temporarily. Take a blacklight to the floors & only do the rooms where you see stains that could be pet mess. all protein stains reflect under blacklight so don't freak out!

Combination of melamagic & solumel. This works fantastic and it is safe because it is toxin & chemical free.

in the past we have always just rented the type from the grocery store (those big huge loud things). It never really worked. Maybe you should hire a company to clean it? I think that's what we are going to do next time we need it done. I know it will cost more, but they probibly do a much better job than those big rented things

Hi A. - I just used a company called Zero Rez for the first time and I was very impressed. I have older carpets and they really looked great after they were done - the stairs were even "fluffy" again. A little expensive but well worth it in my opinion.

Spend the money and hire a professional. I've done it both ways (rug doctor and professional) and by far, the professionals did a better job for the money. I see that you don't live in Colorado (otherwise I'd recommend the Superior Carpet Care that someone else mentioned), but find a company that uses minimal soap, more hot water and steam. Otherwise, they will appear clean at first, but since soap attracts dirt as someone else mentioned, they will be dirty within a couple of weeks. Good luck.

If you want them clean Superior Carpet Care is by far and away the best. They do shampoo them throughly so be sure to add in time for the carpets to dry. But they will come clean and stay clean...no spots reappearing after a month or so. It's who I have all my clients use when selling their home.
