Carpet Cleaning, Should I Rent a Machine (Rug Doctor) or Pay for It to Be Done?

I’d like to get my carpet cleaned just wondering if it’s best to rent the big machine (Rug Doctor) and have my husband do it or pay for someone to come in and take care of the whole thing.

Would you have any recommendations on a carpet cleaning service company (I live in LA) or any tips on what we should use (vinegar, baking soda, ect.) if we choose to go with the Rug Doctor?

Thank you, M.

What can I do next?

If you go with rug doctor they have different types of cleaning solutions you can buy right alongside it based on what you need/ like for pet stains etc. We finally broke down and bought a carpet cleaner and I love it and use it often, even for small spills but I have a younger child.
Renting the rug doctor will be so much cheaper than paying a company to come in and do it.

I've done both & truly, there are some things in life to just pay for. Carpet cleaning is one of them... no moving furniture, no messes, the job is done well, no lugging machines all over or back to the store...

I own my own machine..........Bissell Pro Heat and I love it. We clean carpets every 3-4 months (we have dogs).

I would not use a rental machine or outside source, ugh... someone else's dirt.

The truth? It depends on your time/money constraints.

We have a whole house, minus the kitchen/dining room, full of carpet. I have a carpet cleaner for little 'messes' but it takes FOREVER! It just doesn't have the suction power to bring the water back up in a professional fashion so in the time it would take me to clean one room, a service could have the whole dang house done!

I am a pay all the way kind of girl when it comes to the carpets.

When I had carpet, god I don't miss it, we used to rent the rug doctor. I would pay hundreds to get the carpet clean and a week later the same stains came back. :(

I used to toss a bit of liquid fabric softner in it the second go around. Yeah I am a bit anal. That would break up the soap and make everything smell pretty! :)

If your carpet is older, and has been clean a lot, it's never going to stay clean for long, no matter what you do. If money is an issue, the rug doctor does an adequate job. But pro cleaning just can't be beat. Look for a truck mounted steam cleaner as opposed to a Chem-Dry. It takes longer to dry, but leaves less dirt grabbing residue, and since it's steam, it sanitizes the carpet too. My girlfriend just used a company called zerorez. Her carpets looked and smelled GREAT, and the cleaning product they use is super safe. They will drink it (eew) to prove how harmless it is. They offer lots of first time customer deals too.

the rented ones never have worked for us in the past. I would just hire someone.

Pay some one! I have a 2200 sq ft house and they are in and out in about an hour and they move quite a bit of the furniture. Plus they suck soooo much more water out, so you do not have wet carpets for 8 hrs. We own a carpet cleaner which comes in handy when I need to do a room. But, when I want the whoel house done, I pay someone...way worth the $150!!
