I have a 13 mth daughter, she is just getting her teeth in. She does have 5 now. So she is not eating a lot of hard foods yet. I am trying to make heatlhy and nutrious breakfast foods. I have for the past month been pureeing fruit and veggies and mixing it with pancake mix. She is now bored with them. She is not to big on touching the fruit with her hands. She does not eat her baby cereal with fruit anymore.I have offered her eggs, she is ok with them. Any suggestions on breakfast foods?

What can I do next?

My twin girls love Nutrigrain bars. I cut them into small pieces. The mainly mash them around in their mouth since they don't have a ton of teeth. They are 16 months old but have been eating them for months!

Sausage patties are good because they are very crumbly. Also don't forget the standard dry cereal. Cheerios and Kix are the best. Try soft fruits like bananas or canned peaches and pears. Just give her small cut up bits.

My son loves waffles. They have the multi grain so its a bit healthier, its easy for them to pick up and feed themselves! Just rip it into small pieces and let her go to town! At first she might be resistant, but with all those teeth I don't think she will have any problems.

unsweetened applesauce, oatmeal, grits, Gerber biter biscuits, bread with naturally sweetened jelly, Cheerios will pretty much just dissolve in her mouth regardless of how many teeth she has, banana pieces or mashed bananas, yogurt is very popular with babies that age, you can make smoothies out of fruit and yogurt, cheese, and remember that breakfast doesn't necessarily have to be a "breakfast food" as long as it is still a balanced meal (just like how some people eat breakfast for lunch or dinner, you can give her vegetables and "lunch foods" for breakfast). I hope this helps, as I know I really enjoy feeding my little girl, and I hope it will be an enjoyable experience for you!

Yogurt (You can add fruit, cranberries, raisins, etc.), just fruit for breakfast like a peach that will be fun for her but do it before bath time, my son likes peanut butter toast or grape jelly, oatmeal (healthy heart is a little more expensive but they make blueberry and cranberry that requires no addt'l sugar and is DELICIOUS), Waffles (they make some whole wheat now with apple or blueberry - Albertson's is the best place to find them), muffins are always a hit with my son (I bought a mini muffin pan from Pampered chef so I make bite size muffins and he loves them - They also allow you to be creative and add fruits and veggies).

At 13 months you can get her into more textures and not need to puree stuff. Even without too many teeth they can chew, so she may want some more texture in her diet.
Try cutting up small pieces of fruits instead of pureeing them. At 13 months there is really no need for pureeing unless you are trying to hide something inside something else that they won't eat otherwise.
We moved up to real oatmeal around that time when my son started hating the baby stuff and my 2 1/2 year old still loves it. You can make the real stuff pretty quickly, but I also use the low sugar instant ones.
Also consider cut up waffles--either frozen or ones you make and freeze, cut up french toast--a good way to get eggs/protein. I used to make a batch, freeze them, and then defrost by toasting them that way I could control the sugar and transfats. It was also easy for my husband to make.
Yogurt is great too. My son still loves Yo Baby. And there is a Yo Baby that has added cereal with iron and DHA and RHA. It'll either be in the yogurt section or the organic dairy section depending on your grocer.
Kids are funny though and will just go through phases where they want only one thing or hate something they once loved. Just keep trying new (and old things). As long as you give her a variety of healthy choices--she'll get what she needs!
Finally check out some of the cookbooks for toddlers out there. I really like Superbaby Foods by Annabel Karmel
http://www.amazon.com/Superfoods-Babies-Children-Annabel-...
I also got her other book, First Meal.
Not everything in there is for everyone/kid but I found quite a few recipes and ideas. And many things that the whole family enjoyed.

I'm not sure how you feel about giving her oatmeal but it's worth a shot. Fruit and cream like (strawberries&cream, bananas&cream etc). Or try quaker apples and cinnamon or raisin spice.

Other suggestions for healthy breakfast foods:
1)Cream of Wheat with fruit stirred in-I don't like it but the kids do
2)Oatmeal with unsweetened applesauce and cinnamon or with mashed bananas
3)Sounds gross but my kids loved Creamy grits with eggs cooked in it...you cook the grits til creamy then pour in beaten eggs. Let this sit for a few minutes til it begins to cook then stir gently. The eggs get softly cooked and it has great flavor.
4)Any kind of fruit or vegetable muffin or bread such as zucchini or pumpkin bread or blueberry or apple cinammon muffins. You don't have to add all of the sugar the recipe calls for. Or you can substitute applesauce as the sweetener. I also always add wheat germ to all baked stuff.
5)Try devilled eggs. My kids love these.
6)Puree fruits, add a little apple juice and freeze as popscicles. After the kids eat their eggs, I let them have this.
7)Cottage cheese with fruit
8)Yogurt

I don't love all of the things I feed the kids but I make it for them anyway. Sometimes they love it and sometimes they don't but it is important to not eliminate something just because you personally don't like it. Also make sure you offer it a few times before deciding that it is something your child doesn't like. I wish you the best of luck and enjoy your daughter. They really grow up too fast!

If she doesn't like to eat her baby cereal w/ fruit anymore, why don't you try some whole grains, such as, oatmeal, wheat, triticale, etc. There are alot of different things at a health food store (or some food stores have them) You would have to cook them well to make them digestible. They are delicious and very nutritional.

Hi J.,

I hear a lot of fruit (sweets) suggestions. Fruit is absolutely good but you need to develop a pallet for non-sweet things also. Japanese toddlers will eat fish and seaweed because their pallet has been developed, not because their pallet is different. Along with eggs, you can try hot cereals like grits or oatmeal, cheese, whole grain breads and cooked veggies like carrots, green beans, TREES (asparagus and broccoli),even fish sticks are good.

Breakfast does not have to be different from any other meal. A good nutritionist will tell you meat and veggies are the best things for breakfast as it is the meal that fuels your day!

Hope this helps!

Hey Janelle, I also have a 13 month old with 5 teeth and worry about giving her chunky foods. I give my daugter oatmeal just about every morning. I make it with milk since she is still a little hesitant to drink it. She also loves scrambled eggs, grits, cottage cheese, yogurt, cheerios, graham crackers. She is actually able to eat things like crackers (I make homemade whole wheat ones), bananas choped up and shaken in a covered container with wheat germ...this is so healthy and the wheat germ can be sprinkled on just about anything slimy and it makes it so much easier for them to pick up. I personally stay away from the "quick fixes" when possible. The pre-packaged oatmeal, grits, and others have many hidden sugars and such. Try grated apples, pears, cheese, and anything else you can run down the cheese grater. You will be surprised the things you can get her to eat when they are shredded. Good luck!

I have a home daycare where I have a 13 month old and his mother brings him regular oatmeal and he loves it. I myself fed my children the same thing when they were that old. The Quaker instant oatmeal comes in so many different flavors, your baby will be sure to love one of them. And you can choose to make it any consistantcy you like.Hope this might help! Also try grits......they come in instant form and different flavors as well.

Egg is great, every other day... also try yogurt (especially Yo-Kids or Yo-Baby) with mini whole grain pancakes for energy. I also always gave oatmeal with banana (or applesauce) mixed in (Publix quick cook natural oats, not box mix) and also gave lots of fruit, like kiwi, applesauce, banana, soft pears, strawberries, etc. at breakfast time. Usually between alternating a waffle with egg... pancakes, etc. with yogurt and then the oatmeal. I also used Gerber Graduate cereal bars once in a while with the yogurt... a big hit with my girl!

Good luck!

have you tried grits and eggs? with butter. i know my kids loved it. reg oatmeal with milk and a light amount of sugar for flavor and most babies even 6 mo and up love cheerio's. also yogurt is great for them. my autistic daughter wouldn't have anything firm in her mouth when she was little still won't to some degree altho we do have her eating more meat now just not a big selection of meats. yogurt is great for calcium, it has alot of good. most stage 3 foods are really good at this point altho very bland check out whats out there you don't have to buy it just see what they have for some ideas on what you can try most toddlers can eat what we eat only smaller easier to chew or shredded.

Hi J.,

Wow... sounds like she's at that stage where she rejects everything she used to like! Ugh! You said your daughter doesn't like to touch fruit with her hands, right? My son will pick up cut up banana, but he really loves it when I roll the banana in crushed Cheerios. I have a plastic bag that I put the Cheerios in every couple of days, which I then roll over with a rolling pin until they're pulverized. Then I dump out a bunch on a plate and roll cut up fruit in it. It lets him eat the fruit, but without getting his hands all sticky.

Also, my son (who is almost 16 months, but doesn't have any more teeth than your daughter) LOVES blueberries. They're not messy on the hands, either! My son still eats oatmeal, but I mix it with some apple-strawberry sauce as well as bits of fruit. Maybe that would work for your daughter? Good luck!

Hi J.,

If your family is not vegitarian, offer her scrambled eggs. You can add cheese, pureed veggies and all sorts of good things and they she can pick them up with her hands or she can try using a babyspoon. I recently started some ideas from Jerry Seinfeld's wife's cookbook. She purees all veggies and adds them to everything. My kids are 4 and 5 and although they loved all veggies when they were babies, they are picky now. It's a great way to add them to everything.
You also may try freezing any kind of fruit. Maybe she'll like the cold on her gums and she'll get the nutrients.
Good luck
M.

My 15 month old son loved to eat banana's and toast. We would cut up a banana and lightly toast a piece of bread and put some butter on it. He also loves oatmeal(the quick oats) and malt-o-meal. I began giving him cheerios while he was teething because it helped ease his gums.
