Every year for my brother's birthday or Christmas I get him books. Last year it was Percy Jackson, which he liked, before that it was the Series of Unfortunate Events, and he's done Harry Potter. My mom keeps telling me to quit giving him books, because he's not into reading, but he always ends up reading what I've gotten him, except for maybe the Chronicles of Narnia, but he might have been too young then and I can't guarantee my mom packed them when they moved.
I'm not sure what 13 year old boys are reading nowadays. What are your boys enjoying? I was thinking Hunger Games, my husband and I both liked them, but I wasnt sure he would since it's a girl main character.
It doesn't need to be a series, it could just be one book. I'm just not sure what's out there for his age group that people like.

Definitely Hunger Games. I also suggest any of Margaret Peterson Haddix's books, especially the Shadow Children series and the Missing series. Dystopian books are very popular with kids right now.
My 13 year old son also loved The Giver. He said Journey to the Center of the Earth was good. It was different from the movie.
My 13 year old loves the 39 Clues books - definitely Artemis Fowl - he really couldn't get enough of those books. Also, he enjoyed the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz. He just started on a Clive Cussler book and is really enjoying it. The majority of Clive Cussler books stand on their own - I have read them all myself. I also had someone recommend the 365 Conspiracy series from Usborne books but haven't had the opportunity to check it out. Apparently it is geared to young teenage boys. I think it is fantastic your son reads!
I have a 13 yr old son that LOVES to read. He usually asks for books as his gifts for birthdays, and holidays. He loves the Eragon series, and I actually saw a 4th one that just recently came out (note to self, pick this up for my son). This year he has asked for some "James Bond" books for Christmas. He also reads Steven King, and Richard Matheson (author of "I am Legend"), and anything else he can find on my bookshelf. Though you may want to get your parents permission to get Steven King or Richard Matheson, since they are adult horror. If he likes to read, why not a gift card to your local book store? That way he can pick out what he likes, and you don't have to worry about it! lol
I'm currently reading "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. It's YA fiction and a Newberry Medal book. It's also the first in a trilogy.
I suggest "My Side of the Mountain" and all it's sequels. Those are, to this day, still my favorites.
My son is almost 12, an advanced reader and tends to be on the mature side. He loves the Hunger Games series. I think that would be a great choice.

OH YES -get him "The Hunger Games" trilogy! I'm reading it now and it's fantastic! I can't wait until my boys are old enough for it. As far as it having a girl main character -there are plenty of guys too, and she's one tough cookie! It's important for boys to see women as capable, strong and fearless as well! I have a friend whose son is 14 and he devoured those books when he was 12 and 13.
My 12 yo son liked the Hunger Games and interest could be high since the movie is coming out next year.
My son likes Manga books, which are Japanese comics (and you read them back to front). He is recommending The Demon's Lexicon and The Demon's Covenant.
Another series that both kids read was "Uglies", "Pretties", "Specials". Very sci-fi but also main character is a girl.

Well The second series of the Percy Jackson books is out, The most recent book just came out a couple weeks ago called the Son of Neptune.
OK, it was many years ago, 8 years to be exact since I've had a 13 year old boy. He hated reading until his English teacher suggested Cirque de Freak series. I can't remember the author off the top of my head. If I remember they were about vampires.
We also about that age got him a subscription to ESPN just to get him to read. And he did! I realize it's not the same vocabulary developing dialogue as in good books/novels, but he was reading!
I agree with all the answers you've received so far. Get him the Hunger Games, definitely. My son is 12 & is halfway through the 2nd one of the trilogy now. I read them all first because I'm quicker & I wanted to make sure they were ok for him. I did hesitate a bit because the first one is brutal in parts, but he got through it perfectly fine.
