Book Series Recommendation for 4Th Grade Boy

Our son is in 4th grade, but reads at least a grade level higher. He loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, but is done with that one. Harry Potter was good, but the books are huge, which is not ideal when he needs to take frequent AR tests at school (not positive he's doing AR in 4th grade but preparing just in case). He loves Pokemon, but those books are too short for school reading (and too easy). I'm looking for a recommendation of a series that's very boy-oriented and a fun read. He hates reading, so if the book series isn't engaging, it's a huge battle to get him to do his daily reading.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! I'll also be asking a librarian today, but thought I'd get some parent input first.

What can I do next?

Hi! My son is 9 years-old and is a very advanced reader. He enjoyed the "Artemis Fowl" series. I believe there are 5 or 6 books. They are shorter than the "Harry Potter" series, so are more backpack friendly. Additionally, my son is an avid feline fan, so he enjoyed a series of books called "Warriors" by Erin Hunter. Before you dismiss it as "girly," these cats are truly warriors and engage in battles with rival clans. All of the requisite fighting, death, conflicts that boys love are enmeshed. Much to my chagrin, my son also loves the "Captain Underwear" series. Hey, if it gets them to read, that's the ultimate goal, right? The books are admittedly hilarious.

Hope that helps a little!
Best,
S. :)

Have you tried the Percy Jackson series? I read them out loud to my 2 boys, 6 and 8, and they never wanted me to stop...Much better than the movie was, if you saw that...

Like other moms, I recommend the Percy Jackson series. Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins is good - both my boys loved that. Cabin Creek Mysteries is another one my younger son liked.

encyclopedia brown
boxcar children
calvin and hobbes and Zits collections - I know not really what you're probably looking for, but the vocabulary is great!
scrappers - there's 9 books about a baseball team. each book focuses on a player (by position, starting w/ 1 (pitcher) if you're into baseball terminology). they're easy but he'd be reading!
Ember - a series of 4 books; we're reading number 4 out loud w/ little sister and have loved them!
CS Lewis - Chronicles of Narnia. these are our current audiobooks in the car. I think they invent places to go so they can listen!

good luck!

Goosebumps, Percy Jackson, Bone (graphic novels) and Artemis Fowl are all popular in our house.

Don't forget to ask his teacher! She knows exactly what his reading level is and also what the boys are currently into. She will be able to give you a full list of possibilities.
At that age my son liked the Artemis Fowl series, and the Series of Unfortunate Events. He also loved Tin Tin (don't be put off by "comic" books as they can be very entertaining and educational, Tin Tin in particular is full of history and political/cultural references.)
ETA: oh, and all the Roald Dahl books, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and many, many more, they are ALL good!

Look into the authors Rick Riordan and Brandon Mull. Everything they've written my kids loved.

More to consider but I don't know their AR level-
The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi
Guardians of Ga'Hoole
Cat Warriors
The Hunger Games

As for the Accelerated Reader issue, the Harry Potter series are worth a lot of points. Plus, the books are so entertaining they're worth the effort. The teacher will understand if your son isn't testing frequently if he's reading a large book.

A series of unfortunate events is a good one for that age. My daughter liked all 13 and they're great for AR quizzes. Good luck.

There is a series that reminds me of the Harry potter books. I think they are about a boy named Charlie Bone. IMHO they are well written. There is another series that begins with a book The Fire Within. The first series was recommended by the local librarian and I enjoyed reading the first book to 3rd/4th grade students and the second series was recommended by a local bookstore owner. The staff in bookstores often know what is popular with children.

My twins are just entering 4th, but they loved the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. For light reading like DWK, there's Big Nate, Dragonbreath, Origami Yoda, Darth Paper. If he's a big sports fan, Mike Lupica and Matt Christopher have written lots of titles on all kinds of sports. Happy Reading!

These might be to easy of a read but The Magic Tree house series could be good! Interesting stories, lots to learn. They have 40+ books in the series.
