My oldest daughter is turning 10 in October and is starting to develop. I am wondering if any moms have any good book suggestions on taking care of her body. We are experiencing body odor, little booby buds, pubic hair, etc. I can't believe it!! The past two months she has been quite emotional and is having a hard time sorting out her "weird" feelings, I relate to her completely, mine just did not start until I was 12 or 13 just before I started my period! I had a little more maturity. She is a very sweet and loving girl and extremely bright, but a very young almost 10 year old. If you have any suggestions, that would be great! We are very close and she talks to me about everything, I pray it stays that way! Currently, she is reading at a 12th. grade level with a matching comprehension level so she can handle older versions, just not too explicit.

Thank you for any advice!!

Hi W.,

When I saw your request, I immediately remembered a book I saw about girls taking care of themselves. My daughter was only 6 at the time, but I thought it was perfect for older girls. I found the title, it's "The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls (American Girl Library)". You can look it up on Amazon, and it will even let you browse some of the pages. Hope this helps...good luck!

The "American Girl" series is great.. .and is real popular with girls that age. YOu can get it from www.amazon.com

The book is called " The Care & Keeping Of You- the body book for girls." I really recommend it. It talks about ALL these bodily changes and hygiene too. It's not intimidating at all.

This series also has a book about feelings.. it's called "The Feelings Book- the care and keeping of emotions." THIS is also a great book.

ALthough my girl is not that age yet, I already bought these 2 books from Amazon... I really love the books and am glad I purchased it.

These books are made just for this age group, is friendly reading, and "cool" for girls. The "American Girl" series makes all kinds of different topics, and is really great. It is a great book for her to read solo... AND with Mom... it would be a great bonding book as well, and a way for communication to be encouraged. :)

All the best,
Susan

A book I remember from that stage of my life is "Are You There God? It's Me, Margret." by Judy Blume. While it is fiction it really explains the emotions and changes we go thru in our transformation from lil girls to young women. It really helped me and most of my friends thru that stage.

As a Christian family, have you looked into Dr. Dobson's series? I don't remember the name but my mom used this with me and it worked great (I'm 24 now). We had already talked about natural occurrences of things (shaving legs, period, etc.) but then my mom took me on a "girls weekend" and while we were getting ready for girl stuff (lunch, shopping, movie, etc.) we would play a tape. Of course, she waited a little too long (I had already heard most of it from peers, etc.) but it was good to get the real facts and also have an easy opportunity to ask questions. The weekend was actually very special - we even purchased my "purity ring" then. Of course, as said before, I was a little older (13) and had already attended a "purity seminar" and such. Anyway, the series covers all topics and b/c of her young age, you could avoid some "older topics". I love Dr. Dobson - he does a great job on everything. I suggest you look into his books and tapes to see if it could work for you and your daughter.
Good luck!
