Is this normal? I have an almost 17-month-old son who has started humping a lot. My first reaction is to stop him but my husband says not to do that because he shouldn't feel as if he is doing something wrong. Anyone gone through this?

Hi there. I have a 1 year old son who I've noticed recently doing the humping thing too. I was kinda a little awestruck at first as how to handle it. But i'm ignoring it and I think it is stopping. I dont' think it is anything to worry about. Hope that helps.

My son went through this when he was like 2 1/2 or 3 and I was mortified. But the best thing to do is... do nothing at all. Your husband is correct. You don't want to make him feel like he is doing anything wrong. Just give him his privacy and it will pass. It is just a phase. Boys! :)

As normal as it gets! Just like anything new kids learn, they do it all the time for awhile and then get over it. I agree with your husband, you don't want you child thinking he's doing anything wrong, he isn't being sexual he's just moving in a new way that happens to feel good. My daughter is 13 months and she humps a lot when she's tired, we call it 'belly dancing' so that we can just get over what it looks like.

Hi!!!
Absolutely Normal!!!!
My daughter did when she was 1 1/2 and is still doing it at almost 5. I asked her pedi and she said do not say anything, they more you make a big deal out of it the more she will do it.

My son has started humping since he was 4 months old. He does it while lying on the floor(on his stomach) but when he is excited. i think it's just a sign of excitement. i usually laugh beacuse it looks funny. we don't look at it in any other way. Just a silly little dance that some babies do when they are happy and/or excited.

My daughter did that 10 years ago. There is nothing wrong with that they grow out of it. *-*

my daughter also was a humper.she went as far as sittin on someones lap and humping. very embarrising i must say. she did this till about 3. i told her she had to do that in her room and let her be. family members insisted that when she got older she was gonna be very sexual young and it scared me but she is now 15 and just fine. i think its just natural and he just discovered a new sensation, i agree with your husband let him be he will stop eventually.

It's completely normal for a child to do this. My son started to do it with blankets and sometimes his sippy cup. Thankfully he did it at home and usually in his crib as he went to sleep. He's 3 now and really hasn't done much. As children get older and "hump" and they're more aware of what they are doing try to have them do it in private.
I used to work in a daycare were preschool children as a way to sooth themselves beore they went to sleep. In my experience it's usually just a short phase. i wouldn't pay attention to it since your son is still young.

its perfectly normal....my little one(now 5) started about then.....when he got a bit older i explained that it was something he should only do when he's by himself(like naps or bedtime). he went through a couple of phases where he did it a lot and now its very infrequent(or he's really gotten that its just for him). I too was very surprised at how soon that started! For whats its worth i agree to that you dont want to make a big deal out of it...its normal and you dont want him to grow up feeling ashamed.
