Baby & Dry Cat Food

I have a 7 months old baby and 2 cats who have their dishes with dry cat food by the kitchen. In preparation of baby's increased mobility, I worry about her trying to eat some of the cat food and choking on it.
Has anyone come up with a good solution to this or a similar situation?

What can I do next?

Maybe put the catfood up on the dryer or up somewhere else convienient. Cats can easily jump to thier food. Don't forget about the litter box. You definately don't want her eating that.

Good luck,

hi, my name is Kimber, I would suggest moving the food bowls to the washer and dryer. I feed one cat on the dryer and one on our deep freeze.

I also have a cat and an infant- for now she has her own little spot on the kitchen counter for her food and water(I have quite a bit of counter space so it's not near any food prep areas)- or you could put it in the laundry room- great thing about cats is they can jump almost anywhere.

I have two cats and once my son was mobile I just had to move the cat box, food and water to a totally different area in the house that he could not get to. We purchase some great baby gates at Toys-R-Us so he has some freedom, but can't get near the cat suff. Good luck!

I have pets and a 18 month old son. I have never had to worry about him choking, my problem has been keeping him out of the water dish!! Be prepared for a Water Party!! What I have done with the cat food is to put it somewhere high. Our dog loves to eat the cat food so I put the cat food dish on the dresser. My parents keep their cat food on the washer or dryer. Since cats can jump, you can put it anywhere. Hope that helps!

can you put the dishes up higher so the cats can still get them but the baby can't?

You can either gate the kitchen or begin feeding your cat at regular times of the day (don't do this immediately after you wake up or your cat will learn to come bother you and wake you up because he is hungry) and then remove the dishes after he has eaten. This will take a while to get used to, but it eliminates the cat food from the floor where your baby can access it. Another alternative is to put the cat's dishes on top of something. The cats my family had when I was growing up had their food and water on top of the dryer.

We have a small table sitting next to a window where we keep our cat's food and water. The cat is older, but she can hop onto the windowsill and then up to the table to eat. It keeps the food out of our 9 month old's reach. However, I haven't found an ingenious way to keep the baby away from the litterbox, so if you have any suggestions there... I'd love to hear them.

Just a quick idea, but our cat's food and litter box is on top of the dryer. It's definitely not the best place for me, but it does the job as far as keeping our toddler and our chihuahua out of it! Eventually I will find a better place for it, but for now, my main concern is not what's best for me, but what's best my child. Hope this helps! Oh, and I put a towel underneath his dish and litter box, to catch some of the mess he makes!
Good luck with your newly mobile little one!
