Are the Artemis Fowl books too much for a bright 8-year-old boy (an excellent reader)? Should I wait a year or so?

I have looked online at the books and graphic novels, and the first one (I think it's the first one, it's hard to tell), seems a little advanced.

Thanks for any thoughts.

So What Happened?

He has a Lexile score of 695L.

Thanks for all the comments.

He has been reading to me since he was 5. Of course, I help him when is stuck, or tired.

--- I meant to ask: Is the book called "Artemis Fowl" the first one?

I think it's fine. Great actually.
If you are that concerned, read it as well. Either with or just along side & that way you could communicate about it along the way, should something contreversial arise. It's a great habit to get into, in my humble opinion and the older they get the more fun this can be. Nothing makes a parents heart swell like your child coming to you and recommending a book!

When it comes to reading difficulty, the first Artemis Fowl book has target audience is grades 5-9 (age 10+) with a Lexile score of 600. The Lexile rankings of each book get higher as the series goes on, with the 8th book being 930. The Graphic novels are in the 700s.

As for content, I don't think there is anything that a most 8 year olds can't handle. In the first book, the age of the main character is 12 years old and he is a criminal. He's kind of a snot but if your child isn't the type to emulate attitude then I wouldn't worry about it.

what is your concern?
i mean, they don't have inappropriate sex or violence, right? i read one, and while it didn't do anything for me, it didn't raise any red flags either.
if that's the case, shouldn't it be up to him whether he wants to read them or not? other than ruling out certain books, i didn't choose my boys' reading material for them. nobody can pick for ME what i want to read!
