11 Mo Old Son Has Bumpy Rash

so, my son has what looks like blisters on his fingers and toes and little red bumps on knees, chin, upper arms. there's not a lot of either, just random sprinkles. he also has red raised bumps on his bottom. daycare thought he had hand, foot, and mouth (eww, i know), but my pediatrician said he didn't. he says he has a virus related to that but that he was contagious 2 weeks ago when he contracted it. the nurse said that he can continue to get bumps as the virus gets out of his system. has anyone else experienced this? he doesn't have any other symptoms except the spots.

the doctor mentioned he had a form of coxsackie virus, which is the virus that causes hand foot and mouth. molluscum was not mentioned and he only has "blisters" on his fingers and toes. the rest is just this rash of tiny red dots. i'm waiting it out. the consensus is that it takes a week at least. so, if he's not mostly cleared by wednesday then i'll call again. i just hope it's gone before next saturday when we celebrate his first birthday.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

so, the bumps are gone or have scabbed over. i read up on drsears.com and i think he did have hand, foot and mouth. the interesting thing is we took him in for an ear infection 2 weeks before the bumps and the doctor was surprised he didn't have the same virus he had seen with every other patient. i think it may have been too early to tell at that point and dr. sears said that it's often mistaken for an ear infection.

so, he's good as new. we celebrate the big 1 on saturday. yeah!

thank you everyone for your advice and comments!

H.,
My baby had a rash that came on after having a cold for one day when he was 5 months old. The rash looked like an abrasion on his torso and legs mostly. A little on his arms. it took about 2 months for it to completely disappear. We started bathing him in spring water when it disappeared. We took him to a great ped. derm in the valley. She said it was a viral rash and it would go away.
He just had his 2nd cold (croup) and no rash this time.

Hello H.-
Has you Pediatrician checked your child for Fifths Disease? This falls in line after the Measles, Mumbs, Rubella etc, only it is not as serious. There is no medicine for it, that I am aware of. When my children had it my Doctor had me put lanloin based lotions/cortisone
on their skin and suggested I give them Aveno oatmeal baths. There were no long term issue's from them having
Fifths Disease. You just have to deal with the itch, bumps
and the 2 weeks that they are contagious. There is alot of useful info online if you want to do a little research.

my son had a rash that sounds very similar, his wasn't really bumpy, but red hands and red feet and little patches all over... the pedi said the same, she didn't think it was hand foot and mouth, but it was a virus. As the rash broke, his hands and feet cracked and peeled something awful, but he's fine now, lots of lotion, and it just needed to run it's course.

I don't know, I would trust your doctor, but then I don't always. I know hand foot and mouth is going around right now, but my daughter had something similar to what you're describing, but it wasn't blisters it was just bumps and it was only on her legs and tummy (so obviously not hand foot and mouth), and the doctor said the same thing- it's just a virus and it will go away, and it did. I think these kind of otherwise strange things are common in the first year of life as their immune systems develop- and it drives me crazy when parents automatically are like "well give me antibiotics!" because, A) you shouldn't give antibiotics to infants (under 1yr) unless they have a serious infection (serious like potentially life threatening), and antibiotics would do nothing for a virus!

I'm no doctor, but it sounds to me like a virus my kids had called "Mollescum Contagiosum". I know, it sounds like it's out of a Harry Potter film, but it's basically a kind of wart thing. Both my boys had it and it is VERY common. Picked up at public pools and on play grounds and such. Unfortunately doctors don't seem too concerned with it because it's not harmful in any way, it's just ugly. So there really is no cure. Your pediatrician will tell you not to worry and you child will grow out of it. The problem is that it can hang around for years. In the meantime you have to deal with stares and odd looks from other concerned parents and even though it's not contagious - it doesn't make you feel any better.
I did take both my boys to a pediatric dermatologist who used "beetle juice" (I know - we're back to the harry potter film) on the spots. It has a clinical name, but most doctors and dermatologists will know what you're talking about. It's put on the spots and left to dry. You wash it off after 4 hours and then the bumps will blister, scab over and fall off. There are two problems with this remedy. My son did complain of some discomfort - a bit of burning. This did not last after we bathed him to wash it off. The other problem is that if it has spread to lots of areas it is very hard to treat this way. Most dermatologist will only treat a small area and by doing that - you get rid of the problem in one spot, go back to the dermatologist in a week or so to treat another, but then run the risk of it spreading to an area that you've already treated. And it could wind up being a viscous cycle.
We did find an independant pharmacy in Laguna Niguel that made a "glucose wart cream" for us that finally got rid of the problem with no pain and could treat all the areas, but this "wart cream" is not over the counter and I don't where you're located. I would be happy to talk to you further in regards to trying to get this to you, but you really should talk to a dermatologist first to be sure that is the problem. Maybe there have been improvements in a remedy since my boys had it. This was about a year ago. Good luck to you and don't be fooled by the treatments you'll find online for Mollescum Contagiosum. I tried them all and they did nothing, but cost me money.

Hi, My son had something similar when he was between 1 and 2 yrs. He had a rash, bumps, like tiny bubble blisters on his hands, mostly fingertips and bottom of his feet, maybe on his bottom too. He didn't have any other symptoms that I remember but I believe it was caused by a virius and just went away on its own. If your pediatrician checked him out, just give it time. Antibiotics won't help, they are only for bacterial infections. The rash may peel like dead skin coming off. He will be fine :)

It does sound like H,F & M disease. My daughter had a really bad case of it when she was little and it is not to be forgotten. Many kids get it every year and only present with a sore throat only. I'm pretty sure that by the time the rash presents the child is no longer contagious. He might need some pain reliever if the blisters are painful.

My friends son had that. It didn't itch him or anything so he left them alone and they went away.
I hope it works out that way for you guys.
It wouldn't hurt to put him in a bath with Aveno. That stuff is great for the skin.
Good luck

Hi H..

My family just got over a rash thing that spread to our whole family. It first started with our 3 & a half yo. She got this awful rash all over her body and was itching like crazy. The same day I found I had itchy bumps in the weirdest place, under my breasts but that was the only place on me. So we thought it was chicken pox, we went to the Dr. and he said no, it was viral. No medication was given. Then two days later it seemed to be getting worse like a sunburn and it was hot. So we went to ER and that Dr. said it was an allergic reaction. Then 3 weeks ago I got it all over my body, horrible itching, all over my arms, legs, face. I went to the Dr. and he gave me Prednisone. The next day my 3 yo old got it again all over! Then last weekend the 10 yo got it all over her body. So it's definitely not allergy but viral for sure. It's crazy. I'm just waiting for it to happen to my hubby next. There was really nothing to do but wait it out. We gave benadryl and then the Dr. said claratin for the itching. Also oatmeal baths helped ALOT! And lots of calamine lotion. Good luck I hope your little one feels better. :)

I do not know of a remedy for this rash, but my friend's children (3 yrs. & 9 mos.) both got it after a virus. The baby's rash went away in a week, but the 3 yr. old has been suffering from the rash for over a month. I cannot help you with any remedy, as my friend has tried everything, with no success. I do know that every time her daughter's rash starts to go away, she gets a cold and the rash comes back. My advice would be to keep your son as healthy as possible and be vigilant about keeping him away from people with colds/viruses until it goes away - hopefully, his immune system will fight it off soon!

My son used to get some of it because he had allergies to insect bites. But I will also request a full blood test. Don't take risks. I am concern about the bumps. One time we had guests at home there were 7 persons. We never had so many people in our home. My son got bumps all over his body, he was 4 years old. We did a full blood test and nothing was wrong. But Leukemia shows with sympthoms like that. As soon as my guests left, 3 hours later all the bumps disappeared!. We came to the conclusion with the Dr. that everything was stress related. He is 11 years old and never again had something like that happening. Take care, D.

Hi H.,
Did his pediatrician say it was "molluscum contagiousum" by any chance?
My 5 yr. old was diagnosed with this viral infection and I was told it will spread and may even spread on his face, he'll have it for 6 months to a year, maybe more. It's very itchy and I had to give him benadryl to help with the itching, use different washcloths to bathe him, and make sure we washed our hands when we touched the rash.
I took him to a dermatologist who prescribed a cream to put on him, and after about 2 weeks it's almost gone. Your baby may be too young for the cream though but it's worth a shot to ask.
Good luck!

Hi, it could be something called Moluscum Contagiosum. My son had them. We went to the dermatologist and my son was treated with something they refer to as "bug juice" which causes the affected area to blister then it will scab over. We also used some cream that was prescribed. I was advised to cut back on baths and use Cetafil brand lotion and soap, which really helped. We had to go back twice for treatment and he has been clear for 3 years. I would recommend taking your son to a dermatologist just to make sure.

I'm not sure what it's called but it sounds like what my daughter had a few months ago... when we went to cancun mexico. We went to see the mayan ruins "chichen itza" and then VERY next morning her and my friends son who are both the same age ( almost 2) got those red bumps and rashes... and both the pediatricians said it's just a virus and we need to wait it out ... that it's no big deal... and even though my husband was freaking out until she healed.. she woke up one morning and was all better... so don't worry!

My daughter who is almost 3 now had it when she was about 15 mos. The doc thought it wasnt hand foot mouth but after he looked it up further he found out it really was. She needed a steroid cream to get rid of the "diaper" rash. It was difficult to heal. We also had antibiotics on standby b/c the diaper rash can EASILY get infected.

I recently noticed little bumps similiar to what you are describing around my daughter's face, legs and some on her arms. She seems otherwise fine though. If he's doing well, no fever lasting more than three days, no other symptoms, ride it out like the doctor said. If they last beyond the time expected, then you can look into allergies or other causes.
I noticed someone suggesting antibiotics for viruses. Antibiotics work on bacterial infections, not viral ones. Not only will they not work to get rid of the virus but giving your child (or taking them yourself) antibiotics unnessecarily can lead to antibiotic resistance. Another culprit to AR is not finishing your entire prescription. Even in cases of ear infections, most should not be treated with antibiotics. A good doctor usually makes very sure that your child actually needs them and it sounds like you have a good one. :)

H.,

My son who just turned 5 got a rash from a virus and at first I thought it was an allergic reaction to medicine but it wasn't. It was just part of the virus and he got bumps all over his face and different parts of his body. They really didn't itch much and after a few weeks just went away. Hope that eases your mind.

your son may have had a fever a few weeks back. It really sounds like hand foot mouth, and I just spoke with my pediatrican yesturday and she said hand foot mouth is really going around right now. Even if it is a virus similar to it, its proubably the same symptoms and treatment. My son had it a few months back, and it was no fun. After the bumps came it was about a week (maybe a bit more) for them to go away. Good luck!
