Here it is...My son is going to be 11 months old on the 6th. He olny has two bottom teeth, and we don't see anymore even trying to break through. The pediatrician isn't concerned, but has anyone elses child gone through this? My daughter had a lot of teeth by now and was eating a lot of different foods by now. I just feel bad for him. He didn't even get his first tooth until he was seven months old. If anyone could tell me that this is okay, and share some experiences that would be great. Thanks in advance.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone. I wasn't very concerned, just more worried about him eating properly. He doesn't seem to want the baby food anymore and wants to eat "big people" food. I have talked to many people, and found out that there were some people in my family who had gotten there teeth very late. Some who didn't get there first tooth until after a year. Also, after some research I have found that it is hereditary. Thanks again to everyone.

My daughter didn't get her first tooth until she was 13 1/2 months old. Like you I was concerned too, but the doctor said they don't start to worry unless they don't have any teeth by 18 months. So I wouldn't worry about it. I've also heard that it can be better if their teeth come in later because then the teeth will be healthier.

My daughter did not get her first tooth until she was 11 months old and it was her upper tooth. From talking to other moms and docs, usually the bottom come in first. My pediatrician told us the longer the tooth stays in the gum the healthier it is. Don't worry.

No need to worry on teeth. My 4th and last child did not get his first tooth until he was 11 1/2 months old. They actually say it is good to get them later although most kids have their first tooth around 6 months of age. His lack of teeth did not stop him from eating table food either. Their gums are quite strong.

Our little girl only had two teeth (bottom center) until she was a year old. Then she got 2 on the top and gradually she is now up to 8 total. She is 15 months old. My dentist said that it is actually a good sign that the teeth are coming in slowly. It gives the child's mouth time to adjust and grow to accommodate the new teeth. She also said that the secondary teeth will probably come in slowly too- again a good thing. We may not even have to deal with braces.
Things will progress naturally and your little one will have a mouth full in no time.

My son was 9 months old before he got any teeth, and is not 14 months old with only 4 and one breaking through. We fed him the graduate meals (a bit mushy) and lots of yogurt, applesauce, and potatoes. He's now eating most things, even with only 4 teeth :)

C.,
My first daughter had almost all her teeth by her first birthday. My second daughter final had two teeth only a few days before her first birthday. She is 15 months now and has 4 teeth with one coming through. The ped. told me that he would not worry until she was 15 mon and no teeth. I was told by several moms that once they start coming in the come in fast. For me that is not the case. It seems they are coming in slow. So I just make sure she is as comfortable has possible. She has a dr appt coming up so I am going to make sure that everything is going ok and if I need to worry or not. Hang in there. If you get concern call the dr. or call a ped. dentist. Hope this helps.

My son is 11 months old and just got his first two bottom teeth 2 weeks ago. He also does not have any other ones ready to push through. He's happy...so I'm happy. He eats almost everything we eat even before he had teeth! So I wouldn't be concerned. All kids grow at different rates...but it certainly keeps us mommys on our toes.
Enjoy him:)

Dear C.,

Don't worry about your little boy. My daughter was nearly eleven months old before her teeth started coming in. We thought we were going to have to have her gums lanced. They were so tough. When she finally did get her teeth, it seems like they all came through within days. She was really in a lot of pain, because the gums were so swollen and sore. As long as your doctor is not worried, put your mind at ease. All children develop at their own pace.

Sincerely, M.

I have two children and they both didn't get their first tooth until after 13 months.
They are now 2 and 4 and have caught up with them all. I was worried too, but my sister is a dental hygentist and she told me that the longer the teeth take to come in the stronger they will be.
I hope that this helps.

It's funny you should write about this, because I was talking to a friend today whose daughter didn't get ANY teeth until she was 13 months old. The pediatrician also told her that it was no big deal...I guess my advice is be patient! (And be grateful that your son has 2 teeth :) )

Hi there,

My daughter will be one tomorrow and she's only sporting two bottom teeth... and they haven't even come all the way up yet!

She was quick to develop in terms of crawling and cruising, but she's a little behind in the teeth department.

But, she gives me hope that one day I'll be able to eat solid food without my chompers! ;)

Hi C.

My oldest was 14 months old before he got his first teeth. My daughter just turned 1 and is just starting to cut the 2 bottoms. It's ok, they will be fine. My daughter eats EVERYTHING she can get her little gums on. The only thing I really don't give her are things she can chew like tough meats and raw carrots.

Hope this helps.

My youngest daughter was what we referred to as "dentally delayed" :) She had two teeth at 10 months as well and by the time she was 13 months she had all but 4...so, it was a little rough while they were all coming in, but they came in! We are waiting on the last four now...I wouldn't worry about your son, he'll be fine!

Hi! My daughter is 10 mo. old and has no teeth! The doctor said they are budded but not close to coming in yet. So, I know how you feel and I don't know what to do either. My oldest is now 8 yrs and had her teeth much younger. I know how you feel, I worry is she getting enough nutrients from food? She won't eat hardly any babyfood now, but can't eat anything with much substance. I hold on to the fact that each child is different and it will all even out. You just don't know when!

I wouldn't worry. Kids get teeth at different ages. My girls both didn't get their first teeth until almost 12 months. I look at kids that have teeth by 4 months as going against the norm, but that's just because my kids got theirs so late. Give it time. Like another mom said, our dentist told me that if they get their baby teeth later, they will loose them later. My oldest who will be 6 years old in less than a month hasn't lost any of her baby teeth yet...not even close. Hang in there...they will come through when they are ready!

Both of my boys were virtually toothless until their first birthday. My husband didn't cut his first tooth until he was nearly a year old, and my mom has a very large portrait of me from my first birthday, and I have a giant toothless grin on my face. So it seems that there's something to the idea that getting teeth late runs in families. My grandmother used to say, "They later they come in, the longer they'll keep them!" LOL. I don't know if that's true, but it's perfectly normal for some kids to get teeth later.

My older daughter only got her first teeth at 12 months and she was perfectly healthy. Every child is different. Our younger daughter started teething at 9 months. She already has molars at almost 2, whereas her sister only got them well after turning 2. The older had no teething pain, the younger has been hurting a bit from it. Good luck.

It's fine. My 7 year old had her first tooth when she was 1 year old. It is actually better for them. My younger one had her first tooth at 6 months. I had a lot of problems with her teeth. I went with her to the dentist to fix a lot of cavities (I do brush her and floss her). When they are little it is hard to brush them properly so they can develope more cavities. So don't worry about him. He will get his teeth.

My children had more teeth than that by 10 months, but it NOT uncommon to have less than the average, including just two. I've heard of plenty of moms who had this with their kids. It's perfectly fine! Sometimes there aren't any signs at all when a tooth comes in. It just appears so don't think you have to see bumps and redness and drooling for a tooth to come in. Many times, they just pop, lol!

Both my kids didn't get their first tooth until they were 11 months old. And when they finally came in it was one top tooth. It looked like a snaggle-tooth but the other top one quickly followed and then the bottom one. Then they got nothing until they were close to 18 months when their molars and eye teeth came in. All kids are different. My pediatrician said not to worry about it unless they still didn't have any teeth by 15 months and then they would do x-rays just to make sure they were there in the gums. I guess all kids are different. Some are even born with a tooth. I wouldn't worry :)

C., I really don't think that you have a problem yet. My son who is my oldest was 12.5 months before he even got his first tooth, our pediatrician was not concerned either. My daughter is 8 months old and has no signs of getting any teeth. Ask your parents and your husbands parents to see if either one of your got your teeth in later, the pediatrician told me that it is a herediatary trait.

Good luck.

I'd be clapping my hands with glee :) The longer the teeth stay in the gum the stronger they are. The earlier that the teeth emerge the weaker they are in the long run. Its better to have only a few teeth that are very strong and setting a great foundation of nice strong teeth :)

I have four children, and my third child did not get her first tooth till 7 months old. They just came in later than my first two kids. Don't worry so much, or stress over it. If he didn't have any teeth at all by now, you could worry:-)As long as he is eating well, and is healthy....I can't imagine your doctor showing any real concern. Hang in there, I'm sure little teeth will start popping out before you know it! :-)

I wouldn't worry too much, my niece didn't get her first tooth until after she turned one! My one son didn't get his first until after he was 8 months and didn't finish getting those molars that are supposed to come in when they are 2 until he was 4.5 yrs old, they didn't start showing up until after he was 3 yrs.

All a dentist is going to tell you, is that the longer they stay under the gums, the less chance there is of cavities forming :)

It seemed like forever till the top 2 came in (a month later) then all of a sudden they were coming up like flowers. he got all 4 1st year molars at the same time. There is nothing to be worried about they will come in. And I heard, the longer they wait to come in the better dental health.

Our ped and dentist both said that teeth do tend to follow a pattern with parents. So check to see when you got teeth. Also they said teeth that come in early tend to fall out early and those that come later tend to fall out later. So, you'll probably be on the later track for the tooth fairy.

My 3 all had different time tables for getting teeth - the first as early as 4 months and my 3 was 8 months (i think - my records for her aren't as good poor thing). I remember my sister delaying my neice's one year prof picture because she hoped an extra week or so might mean front teeth! She's 4.5 now and has all of her teeth - it's not a big deal. They can work food with their gums amazingly well!
