Splinter Removal on Finger

Does anyone have some suggestions on removing a splinter from a finger of a 5 year old? She is afraid of the tweezers. Now the area near it is turning red. Is it okay to just let it come out on its own (daughter's preferred way to deal with it)? It looks like it would be a simple removal with the tweezers but my daughter is not on board with my idea!

What can I do next?

Try using a piece of tape. If there is any of the splinter sticking out, the tape should grab hold and pull it out.

When my daughter was one, she was walking on a wood deck and got a lot of splinters on the soles of both her feet. We happened to have her 1 year check-up with the doctor soon after. The doctor actually took out two big ones that were close to the surface but she told us that our bodies have a way of working splinters out naturally. If it doesn't look like it is getting infected, our doctor said not to worry about it.

You can try a piece of tape on the splinter. when you take off the tape, the splinter should come out with it. I've tried that on myself, and it has worked. A little bit of glue might work as well...you'd just have to wait for the glue to dry on the finger, and then peel off the glue.

My kids are older now, but still are not fond of the tweezers. Here is what works for us. If it is close to bedtime, or naptime, use the tweezers when they sleep. Otherwise we try soaking the area and/or useing ice to numb the area. A lollipop in one hand and watching TV keeps them busy while you work on the other hand. Good Luck.

Dear A.,

I would try giving her a nice warm bath right before bedtime. After she falls asleep, try removing the splinter with the tweezers.

Good luck!

This is one of my favorite ones. I have a drama queen daughter that would cry at the site of the tweezers. So, one day I had her read to me out of a childrens book while I took the splinter out and told her not to take her eyes off of the book. I was able to get that splinter out and she didn't even know I did it.
