16 Month Old Might Have Splinter

My daughter was running around on my friends deck with bare feet and fell down a few times. Now she has a spot on the top of her foot that looks like it might be a splinter. She sometimes walks on her toes on that foot like it bothers her, and when I try to inspect that foot she pulls it away and protects it. How am I ever going to get the splinter out? Are there any gentle home remedies or do I have to pull out the 'ol sewing needle?

So What Happened?

Thanks! After waiting a few days I soaked her foot extra long in the tub, then used oil and my finger to rub it out. She whined a bit but it was quick and easy.

When my daughter fights me about taking a sliver out, I put peroxide on the sliver to keep it from getting infected and the sliver eventually comes out on its own. My brother taught me that.

Soak her foot in grated potato. It works like a charm to draw out splinters and other things harboring under the superficial layer of skin. You may need to create a pack of the potato to wrap around her foot if she won't sit still long enough. Or you can try soaking it for 5 minutes each time for how ever many times it takes to work...shouldn't be more than 5 times I'm guessing.

Good luck and let me know if you try it and it works.

An old, old remedy for splinter removal is to put a small piece of salt pork (bacon will work) under a bandaid to hold it securely in place. This draws the end of the splinter out for easy removal.

Let her soak in a tub. After drying her off. Take a piece of duck tape or sticky part of a band-aid and tape it over splinter. When you remove it you should pull out the splinter. If it's under the skin you might have to give it a little squeeze to bring it to the surface before putting tape on it. When she's older you can put elmers glue on it. When the glue dries you peel it and it removes the splinter too.

There's this stuff called Ichthammol Ointment (ask your pharmacist). You apply it to the effected area. Cover it with a bandaid (the stuff is messy) and eventually it will work the splinter out.

My mother told my son when he was around 2 that if he sang loud while she was working on the splinters they would not hurt, She would sing with him and it really helped. He would sit very nicely to let us clean boo boos as long as we reminded him to sing. It even worked when he was in the ER getting his forehead stitched up. They didnt have to strap him down he just lay there and belted out the tune.
Good luck with the splinter. I usually wait for the smaller ones to come out themselves, but if they are big or look infected I will used to sterilized needle and tweezers.

Soaking the splintered area in a water and dish soap often helps. Not only does the water help soften the area, but the soap helps the splinter slide out easier. It worked for me when I had a splinter in my hand with no pain at all. Usually needs to soak for about ten minutes.

Splinters are always tough. What I have done for my four kids in the past is soak the area. Even if you have to give her a long bath, when her skin becomes water logged I just use my finger nail and scrap it out. The skin is usually so loose it comss right out before they even know what happened. It if is deeper you may need to get the tweezers or call the doctor but I would give the soaking a try first.

Hi! Try to wait till after bath time when the skin is much softer. This happened to my now 22 month old daughter as well. Not fun! But after her warm bath it did come rite out - with some help from her sister! Rite after I applied some lotion (she wasn't expecting it) I held the heel of her foot and gently pushed the skin and it came rite up! I grabbed it before she knew what was happening!
Hope it helps! Good luck n God bless!

Hollow needle, (18 gauge) works a whole lot better. Distraction, video and have a good hold on her, and just go for it. Good luck,

My son got a few splinters in his leg at once by kneeling on an old deck. I read that putting a raw potato on it would pull it out and lo and behold it worked! I had to leave it on 20 min and put one on myself too to convince him. I found the remedy on google, which suggested a few others that I did not try.

Hi R. -
My kids know I am an expert splinter remover. ; ) We have an old wood deck, stairs and railings...so we are quite familiar with splinters!
But I remember well the challenge to remove them at the age of your daugther, until I earned their trust! Part of the problem is often just not wanting to have to be still, too.
Honestly, if I could really see it and it needed to be taken out, I would have my husband hold them tightly and still while I got it out. Talking them through it in a sweet calm voice, of course. Using distraction tactics, or giving them something to 'do' to 'help' you. You can get them out with a needle, without it hurting them. Just use the very tip, and gently pull back toop layer of skin some, start at or near the open skin from where the splinter went in, just enough to then be able to grab the splinter with the tweezers. Then I clean it with a disenfectant, and a bad-aid if needed, but it usually isn't.
I hope that helps! Good luck with it!

Hey R.,
T has gotten his share and he is 95% barefoot, even when out in W's woodshop. I've tried but they never come out. I try to coax them a bit after a bath/shower but never works. They have always worked themselves out, its taken a couple or weeks at times and he's shown sensitivity a couple of times, but what else can be done. It does get a little red, as the body builds fluid to push it out, but never anything that looked bad. Give it a few days, and if it surfaces, try getting it. Hope you're all having a nice, wet summer. Call me sometime. XO-B

There is no needle better for removing splinters than the pin from a hypodermic needle. With seven children and a husband that was a boatbuilder we had more than our share of splinters.
Our pediatrician gave me several hypodermic needle tips years ago, I still have some.
They slip right into the puncture and you can "lift" the splinter and pull it right out with little pain or intrusion.
Be sure to sterilize the needle before and after each use.
You can try the passive method, putting a piece of sticky adhesive tape over the hole, but you need to open the entry a bit first. Perhaps apply a very warm face cloth for five minutes or so.
Also, a tiny piece of salt pork tied or taped over entry will draw out a splinter.
I also keep the finest manicure scissors ( to snip the skin on the top side of slinter open) and tweezers that come to a tiny point, they can fit into the hole when held together.
Dont forget to wash the area with soap and water..and leave it open as you would any puncture wound.
As far as holding the child still, it is often a two person job. They are not being contrary, splinters are very frightening for children.
Best wishes and God bless

Inspect the area when she is sleeping........... I have gotten several splinters out of my children this way.. my son always brings it up ... But check it out then, and if you can infact get it out, then do so then.. I would use a flashlight and tweezers.. but if it is in deep you might want to try having her soak it as much as possible then it might slip out.
