Would You Let Your 9 Year Old Walk Home from School?

My 9 year old son wants to walk to his friend's house after school on Friday. He would be walking with his friend & the distance is probably less than a mile. The neighborhood is good, but I'm nervous. I won't be home until around 6 because I work. My son has told me that his friend's parents think that I am too overly protective. I have a neighbor in law enforcement that mentioned that there are 5 pedaphiles (excuse the spelling) in the area. They aparently don't show up on the internet list for various reasons such as they are still...

Skipping a Grade

My son is in second grade, and he is advanced in math and reading at a 5th grade level. We are having conversations with his teacher and principal about moving him to third grade. I'm fairly opposed to this because I think it can be tough socially. Do you have any experiences or advice?

Fourth Grade Daughter and Sex Education

My daughter is in fourth grade. I have bought her a very good book all about "growing up". It is very well written and exactly what I wanted. It is called "It's Perfectly Normal." My husband and I are very open people, meaning that when our children come to us with a question about sex, we are honest and truthful with them. We have always been this way and want to continue to be this way. My question is...when should I give my daughter this book? I don't want her to learn this stuff from her friends or school first. I want my...

9-Year-old Asking About Sex

My daughter has asked me what the word sex means and what sex is. She is 9. I explained to her that some questions are very difficult to answer and that I would like some time to think about it so I answer it the best way I can. She accepted that but I feel I need to give her an answer soon. Any suggestions? How much should a 9-year-old know? It's obvious someone, probably a kid at school, has used the word or talked about it. Otherwise she wouldn't be asking. I do realize she could have also gotten it from TV. We have already talked about...

Retaining Child in Second Grade.

My son is 7 years old, very young for second grade (born in August 16). He also has ADD. For many reasons the school, my husband and I decided that it will be better for him to stay another year in second grade, but he doesn't want to stay another year. WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE HIM HAPPY ABOUT STAYING ANOTHER YEAR IN SECOND GRADE?? (By the way, he doesn't want to move to another school).

Daughter Skipping 3Rd Grade

We moved from a suburban area of PA to a very rural area of MT last year. My daughter is just finishing 2nd grade and her teacher is recommending that she skip 3rd and go right to 4th next year. She already did 3rd grade math this year because she was ahead of the kids here. Her reading is also more advanced than the kids here. She has a Nov birthday so she really is closer to age with the other 3rd grader this year. I think she will do fine, but I'm just wondering what other parents have experienced with kids skipping a grade. Any...
