Hi I am moving from Germany to South Loop for one or possibly two years. My German wife and three children ages 15, 13 and 7 will be attending school. My oldest will attend St. Ignatius. Our move was sudden therefore I am not very informed about my two children and Elementary School. I would like to send them to South Loop Elementary for at least the 1st few months. It is located very close to us and this would allow our children a couple months to adapt socially. Can someone comment on South Loop Elementary School?

What can I do next?

South Loop is a good school, but has some over crowding problems without a good solution or plan to address. Has a very committed group of parents, though. If you don't mind paying modest tuition, Frances Xavier Warde is a truly excellent grade school school, also in the Loop, straight west up Adams. http://www.fxw.org/

Hi there- I went to ignatius too- great school, as I'm sure you know for your eldest. Are you talking about the elementary school in Dearborn park? I am a realtor, whose client just moved there last year. They send their son there and from what I hear from her, they seem to be happy with it. Email me if you have more specific questions.

I have heard many good things about South Loop. I would not hesitate sending my kids there ... in fact, my daughter may start going there next year. Best of luck and welcome to the states!

I'm another Ignatian! I guess I don't need to tell you how great St. Ignatius College Prep is. As for an elementary school... I'm a Chicago Public School teacher and I believe test scores don't give an accurate view into any school, public or private. You can only find out so much from test scores, they can't tell the whole story, and while one person may feel a school is the best thing since sliced bread, it may not be right for another. The best way to see if a school is a good fit for your child is to walk into it with your child, talk to the adults in the building, and go with your instinct. I know it is difficult, but it all falls in place in the end. Good Luck!

I live close by in Bridgeport and the South Loop is a very nice neighborhood--kinda trendy =) St. Ignatius is one of the best high schools in the city, so no worries there. The South loop school has an elementary neighborhood school and also a gifted center that is entered through testing only, so not sure which one you will be considering. I am sure they are both good schools. You may also want to check out St. Therese, it is very close by in Chinatown and they have a great record with test scores and reasonably priced for private school. They teach Mandarin and Spanish starting at pre-k. Here is the website if you would like to check it out. http://www.edline.net/pages/sttheresechinatown

Welcome to Chicago, it has lots to offer and definitely check out meetup.com or similar sites for other families coming from Germany if you would like to have ties with that sort of thing. All the best.

I don't have any information on this school but you can go to this website: www.greatschools.org and find information on test scores and ratings.

Good luck and welcome to Chicago.
