First Time on an Airplane

Denver, CO

My husband, daughter and I are planning our first airplane trip in May. My daughter will be 2 1/2 then and I need advice! We would like to bring the car seat on the plane with us, it is a Britax Marathon, but I have been told by another mom that this particular seat pushes the child too much forward in the seat making their feet touch the seat in front of them. Has anyone experienced this? Do you recommend flying with the car seat or a seat harness at this age? Also, what do you do about drinks for your child. Since you can't get through security with liquids do you buy apple juice at the airport or does the airline provide frequent refills? Any suggestions on what to bring to keep my daughter busy would also be helpful, we are flying from Denver to Chicago - 2 1/2 hours or so. We are both pretty clueless when flying, since we don't do it that often ourselves, so we are pretty anxious about bringing our little one! Thanks for all the help!

Flying Together or Separately

Chicago, IL

Hi Everyone, Travel Question - Do you and your spouse travel on the same flight when you take trips? We have done both ways. I know statistically we're safer on a plane together than we are in a car together, but the thought of my kids being left without either of us freaks me out. My husband and I are taking a short trip the week after Christmas and I'm considering booking separate flights which is a nightmare these days b/c of the limited time/flights. Just wondering...

Gate Checking a Stroller

Chicago, IL

My son will be 6 months old when we travel to Florida and I can't decide if I should bring a stroller with us (we will be renting baby gear at our destination). I can see if we get delayed it being beneficial to have at the airport as a place for my son to laydown/be contained but I'm worried they'll ding it up when I gate check it. Also, how do you go through security with a stroller? Do you have to put the stoller on the xray machine????

Has Anyone Flown with an Infant Recently?

Dallas, TX

My sister will be flying here with her 3 month old baby. What are the restrictions as far as formula goes? I called the airlines and they said she could bring her forumla, but no water and would have to purchase water once past security. Then I looked at the TSA website and it said you could bring forumla greater than 3 ounces within reason. So, now I'm at a lost as to what she should do. I know she's concerned about being able to warm up the bottle also. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciate.

Seeking Advice for Long Plane Rides with an Active Toddler

Anchorage, AK

Hi, in three weeks my family will be traveling to Hawaii. I have a 23 month-old and an 8 year-old daughter. I'm starting to get very stressed out just thinking about the plane ride. We have a red-eye flight for 5 1/2 hours and then another flight that is 6 1/2 hours. I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get my 23 month-old to sleep on the red-eye flight. She is a very social little girl and I'm worried that when she sees all the new people around she won't relax and go to sleep. Does anyone know any tricks? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on keeping her occupied on the next leg of our trip? We're bringing a portable movie player, but she isn't very interested in TV or movies, so I think that will only entertain her for about 15 minutes. If anyone has any ideas on games we could play or toys that I could bring, I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Traveling Internationally 12Hr. Flight

San Francisco, CA

My son and I will be flying overseas to visit his grandparents in November (he will be 7 months by then). It is a 12 hour international flight and I will be flying alone with him. My husband is unable to leave work early so I have to do this alone. Although we will be flying back together my anxiety is going there. How am I supposed to go the bathroom or eat? Also, he will be crawling by then how do you keep them in the seat? How long do babies usually sleep on the plane (someone told me to give him Tylenol or Benadryl not sure if that is good or not). What about the elevation won't his ears pop (someone told me just to breastfeed when taking off and when landing...will that really work what if he is not hungry)? What should I bring with me on the plane...I mean just what I put in his diaper bag now anything special I should know about. Also, the grandparents will be providing all the baby stuff ie. stroller, car seat etc...all I'm bringing is a baby bjorn. I am so nervous about doing this it is my first time flying with my son. I wanted to change the flight to leave with my husband, but that would give the grandparents less time to spend with there grandson so I have to go early for there sake. Any advice would be helpful to elevate my stress of flying alone with my son. Thanks!

Using a Passport Under My Old Name

Chicago, IL

Hello moms, I'm planning on going to Europe this spring with my kids. I haven't changed my name in my passport since I got married, so my passport is under my old last name from my first marriage. All my other documents like DL, ID, SS Card have been changed except for the passport since I didn't need to use it. It expires in 2011, so I only have a few years left to the expiration and to change the name I would have to pay $70 and then another $100 to get a new passport when this one expires... I'm wondering if I can just travel using the passport under the old name. My kids are going with me and their documents have my new last name in them. So that's why I'm concerned. Does anyone know if this will be an issue? Thank you.
