Flying Together or Separately

Hi Everyone,

Travel Question - Do you and your spouse travel on the same flight when you take trips? We have done both ways. I know statistically we're safer on a plane together than we are in a car together, but the thought of my kids being left without either of us freaks me out. My husband and I are taking a short trip the week after Christmas and I'm considering booking separate flights which is a nightmare these days b/c of the limited time/flights. Just wondering...

What can I do next?

When I grew up I had neighbors who were from Ireland and Scottland. They flew separately and met at the airport I guess when they were going to visit their relations. I thought that was a good idea, but it is kind of lonesome to fly by yourself. It depends on what you really think. I have flown with my husband so I guess It felt comfortable, but you might not feel that way. Do what your heart tells you.

Wow I never even thought of traveling separately. I can see where you are coming from, but at the same time thinking about it some more you are absolutely correct that you are much worse off traveling in the same car. I would travel together so you can enjoy yourself on the plane -- if I were going to travel separately I think that would already give me the mindset that the worst was going to happen -- and make sure that you have your estate planning in order...will, trust, living will, etc. We should all have these anyway!

I can understand your fear - I worried the first time I flew without my daughter too. But I completely agree with the women who have said that you are at much greater risk on the ground than in the air. So true.

When my husband and I travel without our daughter, we consider it a rare occasion when we actually get to spend time just the two of us - alone. The destination is great for that, of course, but we also feel like the travel there and back is a part of that alone time. We actually get to sit together on the plane and have uninterrupted conversations, share interesting magazine articles we're reading, or play a game of travel scrabble together. My advice is not to let your somewhat irrational fear rob you of your all-too precious alone time with your husband. Fly together and enjoy each other's company! As they say, getting there is half the fun : )

My parents always flew separately. We haven't had the chance to fly without the kids - yet.

There is so much that can happen to one or both of you on the ground that this seems like something of a misplaced worry. Why put yourself through a nightmare on such a short trip (that with weather and travel delays could leave one of you stuck at home?)

N., I know parents who always fly seperately just for the reason you stated. My husband and I discussed this after hearing of the horrible time they each spent connecting up with each other, waiting, cutting in to their precious time alone together. We came to the conclusion, as you mentioned, if we don't take seperate cars everytime we go somewhere together then why should we take seperate planes. Our statistics are greater of being killed in a car accident then in a plane. However, we always worry more about plane rides as well, lol. Anyway, my husband and I just returned from a trip where we had to fly, we flew on the same plane, and it gave me one less thing to worry about having him there with me. Of course I too hate the thought of our children being left without us, actually the only time I'm almost comfortable flying is when all of us are on the plane together. But for us, we believe that when our time comes, it comes, and it came for a reason. Good luck on your decision.
