You Know Those Home Makeovers on HGTV????

There was am extreme home makeover in Gilbert. I believe the show paid for everything including utilities for like a year. But homeowner had to pay property taxes. I know these owners ended up taking outa mortgage to pay for everything but they ended up losing it anyway. I drive by it several years ago and it was run down. So sad.

On Extreme Homemaker - it is all free - however - the people are assessed taxes on the new value of the home. If they received the deed to the home - most had to take a mortgage out to pay for the taxes. In one case, the children sued the adopted parents (I believe).

In "Yard Crashers" - it's all paid for but it is considered income and you are liable for taxes. I don't know the tax rate.

In some shows - where they sell items of the homeowners - I think it's all good. Like the old Nicey Nash show - messiest house? I think it was all good because the people used their items in exchange for services.

I don't know. You can check on the HGTV website to get the details if you get to be on the show. ALL of the implications are there...just like on The Price is Right (my best friends mom won a van on there back in mid-70's) - you have to pay the taxes on it when you take possession (at least she did back then!! Good thing they had the money!!! :) )

From news stories I've read - it varies.

The homeowners are generally expected to come up with a partial payment (usually less than 50%). However, income does play a role and some families have gotten the makeover for free.

It depends on the show. The crashers series pays for everything but you are taxed on everything because it is income. So say it is $20,000 and your marginal tax rate is 20$ expect to pay $4,000 in taxes.

Now the other ones you give them a budget and they do it for the budget.

I've often wondered that myself. I'm thinking the HGTV probably pays for a lot if not all of it because without folks who will let them do the makeover, they don't have a show. I think all the advertisers really donate a lot of the stuff for the advertising.

My hubby and I are trying o figure out where we can hang out and be approached by the yard crasher guy because we need him desperately in our backyard!

In most cases the tv show will pay for the items/services. However, the value of the products are considered income and therefore need to pay both federal and state income taxes. In addition, the value of your property will increase so when it comes assessment time, the property taxes will see a huge increase.

OOoooooo I would love to get a new master bath. We actually just lost DIY, we get it with our Dish every so often. I love that channel.

I'm under the assumption its free, advertising for all involved, and the homeowner has to pitch in with elbow work.

I do believe that HGTV does pay for everything. I too would love to get into their program because I could sure use it. I have my 5 grandchildren living with me and I could use the room. I'm so happy for the people that actually get this done. I believe it's a blessing from heaven...hugs,L.

I view it more like one big giant comercial. The appliances most likely have the name mentioned or the brand showing up on there sticker. They might donate them so they can be seen same for name brand paint, fixtures, professional designers, funiture. Its all advertizing. Not to mention the commercials inbetween the show breaks are paying for the show and costs of the show.

*** oh and any cleaners , vaccumes, dusters, solutions its all being paid for by that company! i assume.

You don't "pay taxes" on a room or yard makeover.
For the room makeover ones, it's free-you are their advertising and they expect you to be amazed and grateful as payment!
