Hello Mom's. My husband and I are new parents to two beautiful 9 and 1/2 month old twin girls. We need some help on how to get them to nap in the same room. They just stand in their cribs and play and babble to each other. Right now we put one in the room and the other stays up until her sister wakes up from her nap and than she goes down. We keep trying to put them both down over and over thinking eventually they will fall asleep and get used to the routine, but no such luck. They go down together at night and fall asleep by themselves, we just can't get it to happen during the day. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

What can I do next?

You may have to separate them at nap time. I have twin nieces and I remember when they were little and there were times we had to separate them at times cause they did same and just did twin talk the entire nap time. Maybe start them out separate then slowly put them in same room if possible. Good Luck

My twin boys are 1 year old. I have always tried to put them down at the same time...for my own sake...otherwise I don't get anything done! I put on some classical music to help them relax. Sometimes they lay in there and play together or by themselves in their cribs and then fall asleep, and sometimes they don't go to sleep at all. I just take them in their room, tell them it's nap time, give them their blanket and I leave the room. I have had their cribs arranged a couple different ways, maybe you could try...if they are close together moving them further apart. I liked a suggestion someone else gave, if you can't get them to nap in their cribs at the same time try putting one in their room and the other one in a pack n play in another room. Don't give up on nap time! Hopefully you can at least get some quiet time. Good luck!

At 9 1/2 months... they might not need to take naps during the day as much as you'd want them to. I have heard of kids stopping the day time nap as early as that age... although, mine stopped when she was 2. I've also read in baby books, that as long as they're doing "restful" activities, that they are getting rest, so it's ok if they don't fall asleep during that time period. Are they cranky from not taking naps? If not, they may have grown out of the sleeping part - but still need that rest-time. Just stuff I've heard/read, good luck.

I have 14 month old triplets, and I think the biggest thing for us was just setting a schedule that works for us. I like what several of the posts have said below. My kids may not be tired, but restful time in a quiet place is better than no nap at all. There are days when they all just sit up and chatter for 2 hours, but there are also days when they dont even fuss and are asleep before I leave the room. Each day is different, but we are consistant with the time they go down. A big thing for us is that we also need our time. Time to get some cleaning done, shower, veg, that kind of stuff. Sometimes they are really fussy at night, but that just makes them go down better at night. The eye opening thing for me was to realize that the "me" time was what made or broke the day. Plus, the chatter time can be beneficial because it expands thier communication skills in a safe place with no adult, toy, or outside interuptions. I think it brought mine even closer then they were. Plus they try out sounds that turn into words. "Hi" was one that one of them had picked up and gotten praised for. That same day we went to get them a couple of hours later and we got a chorus of 3 "Hi"s. Best wishes and congrats.

I have identical twin girls. They are 5 years now and I still have issues trying to get them to sleep in the same room without talking. I separate them because their sleep is more important and so is my sanity. My husband and I have tried everything to get them to be quiet together. To this day it is hit or miss but the ball is in their court. If they are quiet they can sleep together otherwise they know they need to move to another room. The temptation to talk is too great for them whether it is day or night. Every child is different. I have very energetic, talkative girls and well.....I think they realize they sleep better apart.

I have 3 year old twins, I can't imagine having them nap at different times. I always had my twins do everything at the same time. I have had this problem, you could actually put them down in the same crib, they might get bored of each other that way. Or on my twin group, a mom had one nap in the room and had one in a pack and play set up in another bedroom. HTH.

Hi Lee,
we had the same problem with our twin girls, who are now almost three. We would lay one down until the other fell asleep and then lay the other one down. It usually only takes about 10 minutes for them to fall asleep when there isn't anyone to play with. The other thing we did was move their cribs so they couldn't see each other. I don't know if thats an option for you or not. Good luck !

Hi Lee,
I'm a member of a mothers of multiples group and this was a recent topic on our message board. This is a common problem among twins! Most used the solution to nap their twins at the same time but in separate rooms while maintaining the bedtime routine with no changes. Good luck!

I aslo have twin girls, they are going to turn 3 in Nov. What I did with my girls was I would put the one down that was more tired and when she was asleep then I would put the other one down after the first was asleep. I had no problem with them waking each other up. That way you get some one on one time with each twin and some much needed time for you. I hope this helps.

Hi,

I am also a new parent to beautiful 6 month old boy/girl twins. I have had them napping at the same time in the same room since 4 months. So far I have not had any problems. I usually read them a story before naptime when they are getting tired and then place them in their cribs. Even if one is crying I leave them in there for an hour and they usually fall asleep. Try reading the book "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Baby" it's awesome and does address twins too. I think if they are just playing perhaps maybe they aren't tired enough to nap yet and you should try putting them down a little later (10 minutes) tomorrow to see if they do finally fall asleep.
