Tips to Help Keep My Daughter from Climbing on Our Funiture...

My daughter is almost 1 year old...and she is a master at climbing on and off furniture. I am glad that she has learned this and mastered it already...but there is still the fear of her tripping off the furniture. She has full reign of the living room and it is childproofed and beyond safe...our apartment is small..so even when we are in the other room, we can see her and be next to her within moments. But we basically have to be by her side cause she loves to climb on everything. She is learning 'no' but doesnt grasp the concept that when we say no that it means to never do it again. My husband and I joked about putting everything up on 2x4's or something to make it impossible to climb up on things! Any suggestions before we make a trip to home depot!?! haha!

What can I do next?

There isn't much you can do except keep an eye on her, and tell her no when you can. Eventually she will get very good at not falling off. Actually the more practice she has the better she will get. If you don't want to ever let her climb on the furniture, be consistent and tell her no every time, and then take her somewhere she can climb often. Oh and, as far as the no thing - my 4.5 year old doesn't know that no means never do it again - she forgets a lot :)!

Good luck!

Since climbing is an important physical skill to master, and since your apartment seems to be very safe, what if you choose one piece of furniture that is safest and appropriate to climb, like the couch, and only allow her to do that? If she tries the coffee table, redirect her saying "No climbing the coffee table, but you *can* climb on the couch" and physically take her from the table to couch. I sort of did that with my son, who's 21 months, and he more or less stays off the taboo furniture, although he's perfectly capable of getting up there. Sometimes he puts a leg up and looks for my reaction, but as soon as I say no, he gets back down. It takes a while, believe me, but I think with a consistent message, they can learn what they can and cannot do. I think it's important for them to feel like they have a space to move and play and explore. And a roll off of a couch is a minor head bump - we've had many and it's just part of learning limits. Good luck!

We, too, used to take the cushions off the couch and put them on the floor against the couch. If our daughter rolled off the couch, she would land on the cushions. As long as she didn't jump on the couch, she was allowed free run of it. I know with the first child, the tendency is to try and protect them from getting hurt...however, I've found that "lessons" are learned much more quickly when they experience the consequence themselves. You can remind them to be careful...but allowing her to jump on the couch and fall off (as long as there are no hazardous items around) will teach her to be more careful naturally...otherwise, she'll never understand why she can't jump on the couch.

I think she needs an outlet. Find a place like a gymnastics place that offers toddler time or a bouncer place. I know Gymboree offers classes that may suit you. Then, she will build her skills, and MAYBE be bored with the furniture and not do it!

Well, you could always put a Supergate around the couch... but I would work on teaching her to get down safely, and be consistent with correcting her if she tries to continue climbing (off the back of the couch).
I read somewhere, that babies learning to climb love to play on a patch of large pillows. If you offer her some other kind of climbing activity maybe she will take to that instead of the furniture.
I'm not looking forward to that stage... I hope I have a few months. My daughter is 10.5 months.
Good luck

We used to take the cushions off the couch, and push them up against the couch. They could climb on the cushions and the couch w/o getting hurt.

Congrats on this great new stage of development!! Climbing on furniture has always been a no-no at my house (for safety reasons as well as teaching boundaries- furniture is for sitting/ sleeping, jungle gyms are for climbing. I am old-school lol), so to make sure that they were able to fully experience this important stage of large motor development, I bought for them a small playskool slide. They both loved it- the stairs provided the climbing that they wanted/needed, & the slide was instant gratification/ reward for their hard work!! I also had a small apt at the time, so it took a little rearranging, but it was so worth it. if cost is a factor (those things are expensive!) look on Freecycle or Craigslist for one- these things usually last forever, so you should be able to find a used one for cheap or free! Also, get your little one to the park as often as possible for a variety of things to climb on. HTH :)
