Teething Overload

Hi Moms, i need advice... My 16 month old baby girl only had her two bottom teeth by the time she one. Now within the last two months, she has been cutting more than ten teeth. Is this normal all at once? She is miserable, days of complete lethargy, neediness, lack of sleep, lack of hunger, and just plain fussiness. This has been challenging for everyone. WE have tried everything: teething rings, ice pops, cold wash rags, medicine for fever, ect ect. Her fevers are constant, low grade to sometimes high at night. She also has had episodes of vomitting after waking from sleep. Some say its the excess saliva that makes her gag. I believe all of this, just conderned because it is lasting so long with very little breaks of contentment. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi W.,
Try Humphrey's teething pallets, hey are homeopathic and are a necessity in my family. We all have used them for years. They will help with the fussiness and lack of sleep. I usually order them from Target's pharmacy. Good Luck!

Oh, your poor little sweetheart! I second the suggestion of using homeopathy. The regular homeopathic teething tablets you get in the store may not do the trick, so you should try to see a professional, if possible.

With our daughter, we did frozen carrots and frozen mini whole wheat bagels, and she loved that.

Whether or not cutting 10 teeth is "normal" (what is "normal" anyway?), the fact is it is happening to you, so "normal" doesn't really matter... what matters is finding ways to help her feel better. I know it's hard to watch her go through, and for you to go through yourself, but this too shall pass and all will be well again soon.

My son went through this and my pediatrician suggested I dip my finger in the whiskey bottle and rub it on his gums. She said the alcohol was a natural analgesic and it would calm him down. My grandmother was with me when the pedi (a young woman) told me this and gram said that's what her pedi told her to do with my mom and uncle. Worked like a charm...

However, we only did that at night or naptime. During the day, I would give him chilled teething rings, a large cold carrot (the big part so he wouldn't choke) and even a clean wash cloth soaked in super cold water. That was the best since it was summer. If all else failed, baby tylenol. If you've ever had your wisdom teeth come in, you know how painful it is. What would grownups do? Take an OTC pain reliever. It works for babies, too.

Bottom line, though, it's just a crummy phase and everyone's miserable. Not much ends it except for the teeth coming in. Sorry about that.

Good luck.

Carrot worked the best for my son-he hated teething rings, etc.
He also went through it 7 teeth in 4 weeks. Lots of chewing, sucking, swallowing will keep her ears clear and prevent infection so find her something, anything to chew on.

I used Hylands nature teething tablets. Usually at bed/ nap time to help him calm down but any time he was particularly in pain.

Hope that helps, Good Luck

The ONLY thing that worked for us was liquid calcium/magnesium, it's for adults, but it ROCKED. We used either Blue Bonnett or Lifetime (blueberry flavor) and within a few days, it helped a TON. Calcium/mag is a natural painkiller and also helps with inflammation.

We actually give it to our kids a few times a week and every night with teething or growth spurts and we NEVER hear about growing pains.

Our doctor told us to try it and it's WAY safer than painkillers, like Tylenol, etc.

PS: Our first son got a fever to about 104 degrees, maybe even high during the night and he woke up with 4 teeth....and what do ya know, the fever was gone! I've had several friends whose kids had fevers with teething - no other indication of illness and once the teeth come in, the fever is gone. Our daughter doesn't get the fever, but she gets the clear nasal discharge....right now, she's got ALL 4 canines coming in....hello???? Do they not know that it can be gradual and not all or nothing???? LOL Hang in there.

homeopathic remedies are great for this. the rub is that she needs just ONE remedy and there are hundreds. you can get a book in the library and go over her symptoms to select a remedy yourself or pay somebody to select a remedy for her - professional homeopath is the best choice, but with simple thing like teething any MD, OD or chiro who use homeopathy in their practice can do it.
Good Luck

poor baby! i don't really have advice, but how far along are the teeth? have any broken thru completely? that sounds so extreme. i would discuss with the ped. i am so sorry! good luck and hang in there. the good news is that she won't remember it. once it's over, it's really over. you'll both get through it.
hugs!

Each kids teeths so differently. My son was so unhappy when he was teething. I feel for you and your little girl. The feeling of being so helpless when it comes to comforting our little ones is a horrible feeling. My heart goes out to you. I found that freezing fruits (bananas were my sons favorite) and putting them in the teething nets worked wonders. They are pretty messy but at least your little one can get some food & relief at the same time. When times get tough I repeat "this too shall pass". Silly but it works for me. I send you many happy thoughts and hugs! Being a mommy is a hard job as it often feels like our heart is outside our body!

I think I would almost prefer that to what we have. Every month or so we have a week or two of teething pain. The first time my 16 month old got molars (he now has 4 and I can tell more are coming in), we had a month and a half of it, he got a new one every week or so, and it felt like it was never going to end! Whenever my son starts to seem like he's teething, we give him teething biscuits or crackers. I use the Earth's Best, and this other organic biscuit that is maple flavored. I actually prefer the maple biscuit because they are harder and last longer (so I give him half, and then if he needs another later, the other half). Try a few and see which he prefers, they really help a lot, distracting and making their gums/teeth feel better. What about cold fruit to chew on as well? Have you tried the Hyland's teething tablets or gel? We used Baby Orajel for a while, but it has such nasty stuff in it, I think the Hyland's gel works just as well (without all of the nasties), and for lighter teething, the tablets are great.

Been there, done that! My daughter was the exact same way...except, I was extremely fortunate (as was she)and she didn't experience much pain, fussiness or drooling. However, those times that she did....I would give her a frozen waffle to "gnaw" on.....to this very day (3 years old)she prefers her waffles frozen instead of heated up. Go figure. The best part of your situation is that it is over and done with all at once, hang in there....it shouldn't last much longer!!! Best of luck to you.

yes, normal. look on the bright the pain happens all at once, and now you wont have to deal w/ it for a while. distraction might work-playing in the tub 3 times a day. and lot of holding.

Teething is different for every child. This is unusual and ok. Keep away from things with sugar but cold is good. Check to see if she is breathing through her mouth at night or anytime. If so gently close her lips This helps many things besides the saliva. It won't last forever even though it feels like it. I am a dental hygienist and orafacial myofunctional therapist.

According to every reliable source I've been able to track down, it's a myth that teething can cause fevers. Teething certainly can make everyone miserable and leave your poor girl sleep deprived and hungry - which will leave her immune system a bit vulnerable.

If she's getting high fevers, she's probably sick. If it has been going on more than a couple of days, take her to a doctor please.

I know a lot of people will disagree about teething and fevers being unrelated, but at the turn of the century, 10% of all infant deaths were attributed to teething. They spend so much time teething that it cooincides with *everything* else they get during childhood, so it has been easy to pin everything mysterious on teething.
