Are there any support/socialization groups in the Utica/Troy/Rochester area? I am looking for moms who are already started that might be able to help me see this to fruition for my preschooler.

What can I do next?

There is an enormous HS community in your area. I am in Macomb County and can't give you the list, but we have friends in Auburn Hills so I KNOW the support is there for you! :)

Go to Yahoo Groups and search for Homeschool Michigan. "Reach Oakland" or "Oakland Reach" or something like that is one of them.

Homeschooling is GREAT! good luck!

There are several groups actually.

Here are some resources:

St. Cyril & Methododius Catholic Church on Ryan Rd near 18 Mile hosts the JPII Homeschool group

http://www.homeschoolingmichigan.com/supportgroups.html

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MacombChristianHomeschoolers/

I hear ST. Anastasia Catholic church in Troy also has a group.

Many MOPS groups have women who are part of homeschool groups as well.

I hope this helps.

I do not live near you but have been homeschooling our 6 children for over 20 years. We have 3 that have graduated and 3 still schooling. It is important that you find some support from other homeschoolers, but be careful not to over commit. It is very easy to get so busy "socializing" that you are always running around and not spending enough time together as a family doing "book work". I would recommend thinking of all the ways in which you are already "schooling" (teaching how to count when setting the table, identifying birds at your bird feeder, talking about the presidential election, etc.) and interacting as a family (taking a bath, cleaning the house, going on a vacation, etc.) and then make your school an extension of that. It really is a blessing to be there when the little light bulb goes on, and if you are worried that you don't know a subject well enough to teach it, then get the teacher's manual and learn right along with your child. I was a secondary math and science teacher before staying home, and I was very intimidated with teaching someone how to read and write. After many tears and phone calls to a friend we somehow made it:) Just remember to be flexible and patient, knowing that you, as the mother, are best qualified to teach your own. Relax, smile, and take a "snow day" every now and then, and I'm sure that with God's help and strength you will be successfol. Good luck!

I really like what all the other homeschooling Moms had to say. I also homeschool 3 kids. Most days are fufilling and others frustrating, but wouldnt change it.
Faith Lutheran on Dequindre in Troy has a group called HOME.
There are many mentors to talk and relate to. I also try to stay home most times with seldom field trips. There is so much learning happening on a daily basis. Search the internet, libraries and talk with people. Everything you need is there.
Dont be afraid Just believe LUke 8:50

There is a homeschool co-op in Columbus, Michigan. I was a substitute teacher there for a semester. My own children are not school age, but I learned a great deal from the families involved. The relationships built through working together was very interesting. It reminded me of the village raising a child idea. Let me know if you want some contact information. I know it's on the other side of town, but someone in the group may know of something similar out your way.
