Scratched Cd's

My son has scratched up ALOT of our DVD's and I was wondering if anyone knew a good way to fix them. We have a CD kit that is suppose to fix scratches on CD/DVD's but it doesn't work. I would rather try to repair them than fork out the money and buy new ones just because it's a big expense. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

My kids have scratched up all of our DVDs time and time again! We won't fork out the money either, so I looked online and found out you can use creamy peanut butter, smooth it on with your finger starting at the middle circle and smoothing towards the outside ring. Always use straight strokes toward the outside once the DVD is covered in PB take a lint free cloth and wipe it off using the same one stroke outward movement. It works!

Good Luck!

Our local BlockBuster video has a sign saying they repair scratched CDs/DVDs. I have not tried them, but you might see if a local video store has the same service.

Go to an auto parts store (i.e. Advance Auto Parts) and look in the detail/wax section for Meguiar's Scratch-X. I've had great success with this product. If there are very deep gouges that this product doesn't fix well enough to make the CD work properly, I've gone one step further and used their Headlight Restoration product, which is specifically designed for uncoated plastic products. Good luck!

I have heard toothpaste, the white paste type, will fix them. I have never tried it but I am looking forward to hearing what others suggest. We also have some scratched CD's.

As long as the scratches are not too deep, you can use Turtle Wax. Use it just like you would on a car, except be sure to use strait strokes and not circular. If they are too deep for that to work, then there are places that you can get them buffed out for a small fee. I know that "Hastings Entertainment" and "Replays" are two stores that provide this service.

Hi C.,

I use a natural furniture polish in my home that is primarily carnauba wax. It works great. I spray it on and then massage it from the hole in the middle to the outside edge with straight strokes as recommended on many websites. It is not an aerosol and I don't think an aerosol would work because aerosols are thinned down. Worth a shot...
