Need Help with Scratched Dvds

This works for dvd's and cd's:

Take a dab of regular toothpaste and rub all over the disc with a tissue. Rinse under water and gently dry w/ a towel.

Good as new!

Now...if anyone knows how to make kids put the dvd's back in their cases I'd like to hear about that! ha ha

Hi there, I have heard of toothpaste as well but the other day I saw something on tv about using peanut butter, then wiping it off! I forget what channel it was on. I have not tried it but who knows...

My husband says they have cd repair stuff that you spray on and buff off that you can get almost everywhere. Hollywood video hasd a system that they use but i dont know if they would do it for you on outside dvds.

Hi S., I took a DVD into our local video rental store where they offer a service to repair scratched DVD's. This DVD had a pretty deep scratch and some tiny ones but it wouldn't play. The machine took about 3 minutes to fix it and the cost was 3 dollars. It plays like new now! It was a favorite and the cost to fix it was much better than to replace it. Good luck!

My partner use to work at a store that sold used CDs and DVDs and it was his job to do the following.

1. wash the disk with liquid dish soap and a soft cloth. When you wipe the disk go in straight lines from the center to the edge. NO CIRCLES!!

2. Dry the disk with a soft cloth again going in radiating lines from the center

3. Put a very small drop of liquid turtle wax (that’s right car wax) on the disk and again wipe in radiating lines. Once the disk is covered in the wax continue to wipe as before using clean sections of the cloth until all the wax is gone.

We have the same problem. I've not found anything to cure the scratches, but I've found that simply washing the disc w/ water and dish soap and drying it off w/ a really soft towel makes a big difference.
I'd be very interested if anyone has found a solution for scratched discs. I think all of ours are scratched!

I bought the memorex optifix pro from Target. It has disc cleaner and disc repair liquid and the little machine that spins the disc. It worked really well to clean the discs, but did absolutely nothing to repair the scratches. I tried furniture polish with a soft cloth and that didn't work either. Two things I have heard, but haven't tried are lotion or toothpaste. Rubbing the disc with lotion is supposed to work for light scratches. Rubbing the disc with toothpaste is suppose to work with deeper scratches. You are supposed to use a soft, soft cloth and may have to do it multiple times. I am interested in what other moms have tried, so far I have had no success.

I would ask the local video store...we rented a dvd we wanted to watch and had to take it back because it was scratched and the blu-ray would not read it...they polished it up in about a minute and you would never know it was used...they would be the "pro's in the know"...good luck...T.

toothpaste does work on small scratches. I'm guessing car wax or rainx would work also. However, I use a motorized disc repairer. It comes with the liquid and what amounts to an ultra fine sandpaper wheel to remove scratches. As well as a buffing cloth. Just follow the directions for whichever model you buy.

If the scratches are REALLY deep .. take the disc into a local video store. They have special machines for removing them without damaging what's on the disc.

One last thing .. if the top side (or label side) is scratched or damaged too badly ... toss the disc. There's nothing you can do, since that's where the actual information is, and that can't be fixed.

hi there i just saw on qvc they were selling a book and they were disscusing how to repair scrathes on dvd and thet recomended tooth paste not the gel type and they garenty it work cant recall the book at this moment but it had a egg on it cover

I've had *some* success with using car wax. Just buff it in and wipe it off. Deeper scratches are pretty much useless though. :(

We have a motorized Automax DVD polisher and it works great.

One of the best things that you can do is wash it with liquid dishsoap. It's completely safe to do and works great. Doesn't usually help the "big" scratches. Just be sure to dry it completely before putting it back in your dvd player

I used a disc cleaner, then I locked the DVD case, problem solved, no access, no scratches.

This may sound totally weird, but toothpaste works. What you do is put a squeeze around the DVD and gently rub it all over in a circular motion until the whole disc is covered. Wash it off with water and dry really well. This worked on my son's DVDs. Hope it works for you too!

I thought that my 2 and 3.5 year old boys were the only tremedously-destructive-dvd-scratching toddlers out there. It is nice to know that I am not alone. But, at the same time, I am so sorry that others have to go through the same frustrations. We have already bought 2 Curious George's, 2 Polar Express's, 2-101 Dalmations, and several Baby Einsteins....I wish I knew of these novel ideas sooner... thank you everyone!

This may sound strange but try Rain-X. It is meant for putting on your car windows to keep the water off so it is easier to see in rainy weather but I've used it on CDs that were scratched and skipping. I bet it would work on DVDs...

My kids scratched also our CDs. What I do is COPY all the new CDs and DVDs as soon as you get them. Store the originals in the case, and use the copies, I store them in a 64-CD folder. If the copies get scratched no problem, just burn another.

I also back up all my photos too, and copy all music onto my laptop. Hope that helps.
