Remind me...my Newborn Sleeps a Lot!

I'm trying to remember...how much do newborns usually sleep? My week old girl hardly wakes up every 3-4 hours and eats for maybe twenty minutes +/-. Then she'll usually dozes right off. Her wakeful times are maybe 3-4 times per 24 hrs where she's up longer than that.

Remind me: normal or be concerned?

What can I do next?

Sounds normal to me! I remember thinking my baby slept too much too. I just wish he had slept for longer periods of time!

Normal. I agree with Grandma T enjoy the silence while it last and take this time to get extra rest yourself and house work done. By next week or month it will be completely different.

i just checked in my journal and my daughter slept for 23 hours a day until she was 6 weeks old. It was nice since I had my toddler to care for also (and a c-section wound to heal). Enjoy this time!

Sounds right to me! My newborn is five weeks old and pretty much ate and slept those first couple of weeks. It has really only been the last week that she's been more awake, but even so it's only for an hour at the most.

Reminds me of the good ol' days! My son would wake, get changed, nurse, then fall back asleep. All day/night long. It was so sweet holding him, watching him sleep, rocking him, smelling him, tending to every need. He is a little boy now, not an infant anymore :( so he doesn't need me nearly as much from me now.

Normal - sweet little things sleep so much. Unfortunately not in one big stretch.

I think all babies are different. Both of my babies slept 12 hours STRAIGHT with no feedings. I know...so lucky...but they were big babies at birth (11 pounds) so they had a head start! Are you saying she sleeps alot durning the day too? If you are concerned, check with your doc since they are familiar with your baby. Good luck!

Yep, my son was like that.
Enjoy it.
Feed on-demand.
Feeding for 20+ minutes is good. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the Hind Milk.

Infants sleep a lot.

Normal. I believe at this point, you should only expect MAYBE 3-4 hours of wake time all totaled in. I'll check my book for you, just to make sure, though!
