Problems After Adding Foods/beverages W/pre/probiotics

I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had any gastrointestinal problems after adding foods and/or beverages with pre/probiotics, and foods w/active cultures into their diets, and if so, how long did they last?

I bought Crystal Light w/prebiotics in it, but I don't think this drink is for me. It tastes really good, though. I'm thinking maybe my system just needs to get used to it.

Thanks for any information or input.

Dito on the Cyrstal light advice! We know of people getting started on the nutritional shakes we are distributors for and using Crystal light got worse. We sometimes ask people the specific question of whether or not they are taking crystal light or other similar artificial sweeteners. If you are interested email me and I can send you an interesting study on that sweetener. My email is ____@____.com

While I am not currently taking probiotics (other than consuming yogurt), I have taken them in the past in capsule form. The first time I took them it caused some intestinal upset and I had diarrhea that evening. The next day it was not so bad and got better after that. I think what was happening was the good bacteria in the probiotic was kicking out some of the bad bacteria in my gut and that was what caused the discomfort. As your gut adjusts to hosting more of the good bacteria, the probiotics don't cause so much of an upset. I would try a couple more drinks to see if you adjust. If not I would quit drinking them. Also, sometimes artificial sweeteners can cause some intestinal distress. You might check what type of sweetener the Crystal Light uses.

My thought is that the active cultures and probiotics are helping to kick out the toxins in your body (that is why you are taking them right?) and the artificial sweeteners, colors and flavors are toxic, try to find something that is more natural that your body can accept more easily. Sometimes our systems do need to get used to working properly and it can be uncomfortable at first, so back off if things start working too fast. You should feel better when you find the right combinations.

A majority probiotics contain FOS which is a fructolose-Sp?type food to keep the cultures alive. Some people have a reaction of GAStrointestinal problems due to the FOS. Look for a probiotic suppliment that has NO FOS and try that...add it to your food you normally eat. We worked this out the hard way! Good luck.

I would look for more natural sources of probiotics - Crystal Light is definitely not natural! I would look for something in the natural food section with an ingredients list that you can easily read.

Some suggestions that we have used: kefir (I add it into fruit smoothies), yogurt or a daily supplement. Many foods have these naturally occurring (which is usually the best way to eat anything!) and a lot of food processors are adding them into foods - or hilighting that they are already there.

We added probiotics to my daughters diet to help solve gastro-intestinal issues. We also added benefiber to her diet for a while - you can bake with it, add it to yogurt, etc (it doesn't have a flavor)

One thing to keep in mind is that if you are increasing your fiber intake, your body will have to get used to it - you need to increase the amount of water you drink as well. With an increase in fiber, it take a couple of weeks to settle out. Probiotics are working in your intestinal tract, so the same most likely holds true there as well - keep up your water intake and your body should balance out soon!

Good luck!
J.

Make sure that any foods that you are eating don't have the baby laxative as an ingredient. I can't remember what it is called but I went throught this several years ago. V.

Just drink XanGo. It's much better the pre/probiotics.

pre and probiotics can give you gas for a week or two while your system adjusts. I would recommend NOT using crystal light as your source! A large study just came out showing how artificial sweeteners actually make people gain more weight by tricking the body into thinking it is hungry. also splenda if just sugar with a chlorine added to it and chlorine is neurotoxic. better just to eat yogurt or get a high quality probiotic that you take as a powder or capsule.

I have a lot of nutritionist training and would betcha anything it is the artificial sweetener in the Crystal Light.

I would recommend just eating some yogurt every morning if you want probiotics. Avoid the heavily sweetened brands -- Nancy's (organic is best) and Cascade Fresh are good brands.
