Potty Training Tips - Madison,AL

I have been working with my son on potty training. He goes to the potty everytime I put him on it, and we can keep the diapers dry. I figured it was time to move to underwear since we've been keeping the diapers dry for about 3 weeks, and he would tell me when he had to go before he went. However, for some reason once I put underwear on him(that he picked out) its like he forgets everything. He won't tell me when he has to go, and he goes on the floor, and then tells me he went. We are still following the exact same schedule, and he will still go in the potty when I take him. He just thinks its fun or okay to pee in my floor and on the furniture. And what makes it worse is its like he doesn't even realize he's wet. How do I help him to understand that he's wet, and that its not okay to pee in the floor or on the furniture.

What can I do next?

My friend recommended to me to try putting underwear on with a pull-up over them so they can feel wet and don't make messes all over the place. It worked for her but the only thing that worked for me was putting my son in part-time daycare. He was completely potty trained within a week!!! I have heard a lot of parents say the same thing. Good luck, boys just seem to be stubborn when it comes to potty training!

I had no problems with my son. We did not go to even pullups until he kept a diaper dry for several months and would pee out of the pullup at night. When we were teaching him to go to potty, we made it very clear to tell us. so if I were you I would go back to diapers until he formed the habit of telling you ALL the time and then experiment with underwear sometimes. Obviously he is not ready and it is not sanitary to clean that up all the time. We also punished my son for going in his pants. But rewarded him with a quarter to put in his musical piggy bank when he went in the potty. we even called grandparents to praise him while he was sitting there and they gave him a quarter to put in his piggy bank also for going. It has to be fun but it also has to be their idea.

Ok, my daughter is still too young for this, so I don't know if they work. But I saw an ad the other day for pull ups that get cool when the child pees. Check them out!

I am going through the potty training with my daughter also. Through all my frustrations I finally figured out something that would work for her. Every time she goes potty we sing a silly potty song. (only if she goes) I also cut out shapes and made some drawings of Dora and Boots so every time she goes she gets to hang one up on the wall as high as we can get it! Then we count them after each time to see how many times she has gone since she started. It is very exciting for her. Just be prepared for lots of questions about the decorations from visitors! I am not a great artist but if you email me and tell me what his fav. cartoon is I will try and draw some characters and email them to you. You can cut them out and even let him color them if you'd like. The whole process seemed to have gone better once I got my daughter excited about it. My email is ____@____.com luck!

It sounds like he's not ready yet for the big boy underpants.
There are the Cool Alert pull-ups as well as the Feel-n-Learn training pants as well with a raised liner so they can feel sooner when they are wet.

It may take a while in these disposable underwear, but at least they come with fun characters on them like Spiderman and Diego!

younger kids don't really know the difference between the diaper and the underwear all they know is there is something there on their bottoms. He's not doing it out of spite as much it may seem lol My son did this also and I found the best thing at least at home is to let him run around bare bottom no diaper or underwear. If there is nothing to pee he might be more willing to going to the potty. When we went out i still but diapers on him just in case of accidents but ask him routinly if he had to go and finally moved to big boy pants. It worked for me I hope this might help you.

If he was doing well before the underwear- then he knows what he is doing and the novelty of them peeing through is what is his current currency is- the neat factor. So... what I did with my son is make a traintrack chart (he is into trains) each square was worth .30- the cost of a pullup- so everytime he was dry AND peed or pooped in the potty - I color in another traintrack... and when he earns $7 we go to the store and he picks out a toy. You could shift this to anything... Make a spiderweb spiral for spiderman.... color in the "squares" that are left..

Of course you could spend an hour or whatever with him in the tub letting him pee through different things to see what happens... really let him explore fluids and what happens when they pour through a spatula or a colandar or different fabrics... He would only be able to pee once... but just make it about play, pouring water through fabric or other things... it is just something new he has discovered and his brain has to wrap around it and figure it out. Just explain that when he wants to play with water or experiment he does it in the tub.
I am sure the reward of peeing in the potty will outweigh the novelty of peeing through fabric after awhile.
