Potty Training and "Holding It In."

We just started seriously potty training my 2 year old. By serious, I mean letting her roam around sans diaper when she's home. She successfully on Friday night said she had to go to the potty and her first poopy! After she went she cried. I don't know if she was overwhelmed from the "thud" of it or if it hurt bc she hadn't gone in two days.

Ever since that, she hasn't gone poopy and we're going on four days tomorrow!

I've continued to let her run around without a diaper in the morning but hubby doesn't want her without a diaper at night bc "it's late." (Personally I don't think he wants to deal with accidents, but too bad. His cat pees all the time. LOL.)

Well, imo there is no convenient time to potty train and we should run with it or DD will get confused. Consistency is key!

Anyway, I'm wondering if there might be a link between her first succesful potty poop and her withholding going? We gave her Miralax for a few days now (as per pediatrician.)

As always, thank you!

What can I do next?

when we were potty training.. they took off the diaper and wore panties.. and were trained in 3 days.. .

I do not go back and forth between diapers and panties..

yes the poo probably scared her..

keep up the water juice fruit and miralax.. but no more diapers except at night to sleep.. night time pottty trainign comes later.

Yes, there is definitely a link, whether it scared her or hurt her. And I agree with you, consistency is key!

Keep her on the Miralax, lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains and water to keep her needing to go. And because she is already withholding it (one of the few things she has control over) check out this site, it will give you tips to deal with potty training refusers before the situation gets too bad. I wish I had read it before I started training my last, though it helped it would have made things easier from the get-go ; )

I think it may be key that the thud scared her. Some kiddos are like that. I've heard of moms who have to put the diaper on so the kiddo will poop.

With our oldest, she was pee trained for months, but not poop trained. She naturally went every other day, and would poop in her underwear (NOT FUN!).

Have you tried letting her wear underwear? We just started last Monday with our 2 year old with the no diaper. By Friday she was wearing underwear and was accident free (until we went away over the weekend -- today we had 3 accidents, but she is getting better with holding it and saying she needs to go).

Good luck. I hope you get some better answers!

My kids did this also. I think that it is confusing to them. It also takes a lot of cooperation between a lot of muscles. I used to make sure they had lots of fruit or juice. Whatever makes it easy for them to go.
