Potty Training Advice - Gilbert,AZ

My sons potty training seems to be at a brick wall. He will sit on the potty and pee/poop without a problem and he loves his "Big Boy Undies" and wants nothing to do with diapers anymore. The issue I am having is getting him to tell me when he needs to go. I have been setting a timer for every 45min and he will go in with me and pee every time but he has never told me himself that it is time to use the potty. He also seems to not have issues with accidents. He will wet/poop his pants and not even tell me. If I notice and take him to the potty he will go in the potty but have no problem with the fact that he had an accident. How do I familiarize him more with his body and when he needs to use the bathroom? How do I convience him that he doesn't want dirty pants and that he should tell me when he needs to go? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

I don't want to sound negative or skeptical, but man, you are lucky to be where you are with your son! I've had 4 babies, my youngest will be 3 years old in July and he still isn't even close to being potty trained! And all four of my kids were not potty trained at 23 months. The earliest I was able to potty train and be successful was my daughter and she was fully potty trained (no accidents at all) at 30 months. I understand the feeling of not wanting 2 in diapers. But it's not so bad. Also you have to know that when your new baby comes, this will be a big shock to your older son and even if he is potty trained by then, there's a very good chance he will revert back to soiling his underpants due to all the changes. Trust me, my 4 year old started soiling his pants again when the new baby came. If I were you, I would not push him and possibly put it off entirely until after your new baby comes and you get back into your regular routines.

Sorry to sound so negative, but my oldest is only 9 so I've been through this a lot in a short period of time! If you ever want someone to talk to just send me a message! Hope that helps!

When I was potty training my daughter I had the same problem. What finally broke it was when I started to through away her big girl undies if she went poo in them. When her most favorite princess panties went into the trash I never had the problem again.

I think your son is doing great for how young he is, and I don't think you should put it off. Just keep up with what you are doing. I've been working in childcare for 7 years, with ages 1 1/2-3, so I have helped potty train many children! If he has a favorite character, I would definately try buying him those underpants, and like Kaiya P said, throwing them away if he soils them. And if your son really doesn't want diapers anymore, then you should try putting them back on, to make him aware it's not okay to go in his pants. Your son is young, but I think you are doing everything right, accidents happen. Your son is just probably to busy exploring other things, which is not a bad thing. So keep it up and with time he will go on his own!

He's just barely two I would give me a little bit ~ Boys take a little longer and both my children were each a little different. My 1st potty trained at 2 1/2 and my 2nd at 3 years 2 months.. Both Girls.. Good luck to you.. I wouldn't push it too much..

This is the advice I was given when trying to potty train my son who was about the same age as yours. EVERYONE who had boys told me that with boys, they will tell you when they are ready and not a moment sooner! I didn't like that advice and thought they were all wrong. Then one day my son came to me and said he had to pee and we went to the bathroom and he went in the toilet from that day on. He would still poop his pants though. Then about 2 or 3 months later he came and said he needed to go poop, so we went in the toilet from that day on! I guess they were right. But one thing I did with my son was keep him in pull-ups until he did everything in the toilet! It may have helped him get encouraged, not really sure!
I am sure you didn't want this advice same as I didn't when I got it but everyone did seem to be true. Sorry :-(
