Hello, I am writing to see if anyone can give me advise on potty training. I am the mother of a beautiful 2 1/2 year old son and I am concern because he will be 3 in Aug. and has no interest in going potty. He lets me know when he makes in his diaper and he knows what the potty is but wants nothing to do with it. About 6 months ago, he used the potty 3 times but then stopped completely. I feel like am failing because I watch children from my home and never had a problem potty training other children. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

What can I do next?

T.,

Don't worry about this yet. My son is is 3 on July 30, and also isn't potty training yet. He's gone a few times, knows what it's for, but not really interested. All kids are different, so he'll get there in his own time.

Keep in mind that AVERAGE age for a boy to be trained for daytime dryness is 37 months. That's a month past three, and only the average. So for every kids who trains a few months before that, there's going to be a kid who is a few months after that, too. You're not into worry territory yet!

hi T., i wouldnt sweat it at all. my son was 3 1/2 when he finally did it! i had tried everything under the sun, i knew he knew what to do, he just didnt want to yet. he actually did the same thing, went on the potty a few times, i was using a reward chart, i thought we had it. then i had my second baby and he then lost interest for months. we still tried, encouraged him all the time, etc...then one day he was just ready, and that was it, totally trained, both day and night, almost right away, no issues. he still has an accident once in a blue moon, but they are only because he gets too busy and waits until the last second to go. almost every accident has actually been in the bathroom, he just couldnt get his pants undone in time. (actually, there is something on the sesame street website where elmo talks about going on the potty and "feeling it" and he started echoing him and that seemed to help.) he has been trained around 9 months now, and he has had maybe 8 or 10 accidents since the first day he decided to go on the toilet.
my girlfriends son is almost 5 and is still in diapers, its a huge issue now, it has become a power struggle between them, you dont want that. just be light and very very positive when he does go. get a couple of books or videos about it, but just let them be another part of what he reads/watches, dont pressure it. also, i let him see his friends using the potty, i think that helped a lot. and dont you dare feel like a failure! this is just one of many times that your kid will be different one way or another, they are all just different, thats all. its hard, but dont fall into that trap of comparing kids. hth, D.

Don't worry, you're not doing anything wrong. My oldest son was trained by 2 1/2 but my second wanted nothing to do with it. A week after his third birthday, he took off the pullups and has been going on the potty ever since. My youngest will be three in July. He goes every so often on the potty now, but would rather have the diaper on. Positive encouragement goes a long way. And I wouldn't worry about what other children are doing. You'll drive yourself crazy! He'll get it and then you'll have a whole new set of issues to deal with!!

Hello T.,

I am a 27 year old mom of a 2 year and 5 month old son. He is also not going to the potty on his own. Like your son, he tells me when he makes a pee pee or make poo poo but after the fact. I've been getting frustrated myself because I have everyone telling me that he has to be trained by now and that I should try harder. I don't even have him in pullups yet because he pees so much it always leaks through. I guess the other moms are right, we just have to keep trying and when they are ready, they will come around.

My son is going to be three in May and he just learned to really control his bowels and use the potty. He still wears pull-ups at nap and bedtime and sometimes goes in them. I, too, worked in daycare and potty trained others at 2 and felt like a failure. But every child is ready when they are. Xander wouldn't go near the potty. Then one day he woke up, said he needed to go, and it's been no problem ever since. Just keep trying to introduce him to the potty. What worked with Xander is we didn't put the potty in the bathroom right away. We let him use it in the living room or his room since he wasn't comfortable in the bathroom. After he got used to it we moved it. Also, and it sounds funny, but we let him run around without a pull-up and he went in his pants a few times and soon realized it was really uncomfortable. Yeah, it's gross and meant lots of laundry, but it worked really quickly. Less than a week. When he does show interest and try, praise the heck out of him. Stickers worked well for my son also. Just be patient and keep trying. You're not a failure. This is an issue for all mothers.
