Pediatric Opthamologist in Pdx/beaverton Area

My 6 year old step-daughter was recently put on my Medical coverage after being on Kaiser her whole life. We now need to find a new opthamologist for her. She has amblyopia that we currently are treating with glasses and patching for two hours a day. We haven't seen any improvement (we're actually going a bit backwards) and have been a bit letdown by her previous opthamologist. Does anyone out there know of a pro-active opthamologist in the PDX/Beaverton area that they feel comfortable recommending?

What can I do next?

We also have gone to Dr. Aaby and find that he is very good with children. We go to the Peterkort office by St. Vincent's hospital. Our pediatrician had to give us a referral there for the insurance to cover the visit, so check with your plan first. They have a little play area in the waiting room for kids and also give them a little toy when their visit is through.

My son has seen Dr. Aaby of EyeHealth Northwest. He specializes in pediatric ophthalmology. He has offices in NW Portland and at Peterkort Plaza next to St. Vincent Hospital. We've been very happy with Dr. Aaby.

Good luck with your search.

Dear K.:

I too have amblyopia and so my daughter had to be checked every six months to see if she would have it also. We went to the Casey Eye Institute at OHSU and saw Dr. Wheeler, he was wonderful. He is an Ped. Opthamoligist so I am not sure if your insurance will cover specialist. I highly recommend the whole staff. They treat amblyopia all the time and are on top of all the latest treatments. I would also like to let you know that mine was not treatable(back in the day). I wore glasses from 1/1/2 yrs and patches all thru 3rd grade. I still have it but do not suffer from it, at all. A lot more can be done now than when I was a child. Good luck.

I worked in the optical field for 5 yrs...seemed that many really liked the place Chrissy talked about, Child Eye Care Assoc. You might want to seek out vision therapy for her...I would guess that the doctor would have good advice or you could contact your insurance co. and ask about who does it in this area. Best of luck!

We recently started taking our 3 year old to the children's eye clinic up at OHSU. They are AWESOME!! My son does not like anyone messing with his eyes & he freaks out. Our last doctor was horrible & had no compassion towards my son at all, making him really scared. So I was thrilled at the love & compassion Dr.Daniel Karr showed my son when I took him there. He was so patient with him, which is what we really needed. Anyway, we've only been there once so far, but my son is wearing glasses now & may need surgery, & I've heard they are the best in the business. It also really helped that the clinic is so children oriented that they have a huge play area to keep the kids occupied while your waiting.
