Nutritionist / Advice on Eating and Exercising

Hi Ladies,
This is my first request after reading many many online :-) Any who. I think that I would benefit from seeing a nutritionist and figuring out what's going on with my body. I exercise regularly, and I know that I don't always make the best food choices, but even when I do for an extended period of time - I don't seem to lose the weight I think that I should. I lost about 20 lbs in about 12 months - which is good, but I'm still having issues, and since the begining of the summer I gained another 7-8 back. It's very defeating, and I'm not sure what else I should do. Also, the days that I exercise I am starving all day and can't seem to get enough to eat. Occasionally on those exercise days - I get migranes. Definately not from a lack of water - I think I was a fish in another life :-) So I just think I should find someone who can point me in the right direction! TIA! What do you think?

What can I do next?

Sounds like you need some help on learning WHAT to eat. If you were eating a balance of proteins/carbs/fat you shouldn't be "starving" the way you say you are. Have you read The Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno? http://www.eatcleandiet.com/

It is a straight forward lifestyle change of eating that is not a diet. I highly recommend you look into it. It is more an education on foods and how to balance them than anything else.

It sounds like you are really ready to make the final plunge to get to your goals and I applaud that. Feeling ood and looking good help bring out the best in you and as a result help you be a better parent. Good luck!

I went to see a nutritionist and lost about 50 lbs. I gained back 15 after I stoped going. I was having 1200 cal a day. It worked but I never really change what I eat that much. I just ate less. So when I went to my doctor he put me on a diet that shows you what things you can eat that burn more cals eating than they have in them. It has really been working for me. I have lost ten of the 15 I gained back. I am hungry often but that is because I am a very picky eater.

( You can eat all you want of these foods)
Sample of some of the Negative Foods

Green beans Asparagus Broccoli Cauliflower
celery Cucumber Lettuce Mushrooms Onions
Pepper Apples Blueberries Cantaloupe Pineapple
Grapefruit Grapes Mangos Oranges

There are many more. Below is a sample diet day.

Breakfast
Coffee or Juice
1/2 Pear or 1/2 Orange
1 cup skim milk

Lunch
Lettuce Celery and cucumber salad with dressing
Cottage cheese
Apple sauce

Dinner
Lettuce with dressing
Broccoli
Turkey
Green beans
Peaches

It is hard at first. But it is working for me. I have only been on this diet for two and a half weeks! I eat a lot of fruit! I day a week you can eat what you want within reason!!

I hope this was not too confusing!

Hey there. I was in a very similar scenario several years ago (that dang '20 too many' that just won't go away), and since I'm a food writer, I decided to delve into what, exactly, healthy eating looked like. Now, I've finally lost--and kept off--those 20-too-many, and I've launched Nourish Network, a new website and conversational hub that promotes sustainable change through tempting recipes and bite-sized bits of rich content on sound nutrition, “eco-clean” eating and being mindful around meals. A social media element, like Facebook for foodies, encourages members to dig deeper into the conversation and connect with others who share similar views and concerns. The idea is to empower people to maintain a healthy body, a comfortable weight and an eco-clean conscience while getting more pleasure from food. Check it out at www.nourishnetwork.com -- I hope it will help you make the changes you want for good! Hope to see you there.

I will be very brief. Find out your blood type and get the book eat right for your blood type you could be eating foods that are healthy but not for your type. Do the exercise that you can enjoy..it may be traditional exercise or it could be your favorite dance on a regular base like 3 to 4 time per week. Plus you need supplements..we cant get all of our nutrients from our foods and you could be missing nutrients that can help your glandular system. I get my supplements from www.mynsp.com/ford1

I had the same problem. I hired Dr. Hollen Stone ###-###-####). She is a chiropractor but specializes in nutrition consulting. We discovered I had food allergies I wasn't aware of (no outward symptoms) which not only played into the weight loss but my anemia as well. She is very nice and worked out an affordable program for me. She does blood work to see what is going on and develops an eating and exercise plan that will work for you. Good luck.

I would definitely consider going to your regular doctor first and talking about this with him/her. Write down what you eat and when and what exercises you do and bring this with you. Try and log when you get the migraines too. Also note the amount of liquids (not just water) you consume in a day and night. I would think they would do some routine tests (glucose, thyroid, etc.) to make sure everything is working just fine!! Not trying to worry you but there's no harm in getting a checkup anyway.

I think going to a nutitrionist is a great idea also - they may help you adjust your eating habits which in turn could help your migraines (I get them if I go too long without eating and my sugar levels drop!). Lots of fiber helps fill you up too! I hope this helps.

I know you have already gotten a lot of responses with some great advice, but just thought I'd let you know that I too am a huge weight watchers fan. You'll learn not to diet per say, but just how to incorporate a healthy lifestyle everyday. When I need support or extra help I start attending meetings and weigh-ins again, then I'm back on track and can do it myself.

I was battling my weight constantly and my sister-in-law told me about "Adipex". I went to a doctor (actually a nurse practicioner) and they gave me a prescription. It has been wonderful. I have so much energy now, it supressed my appetite (which was my biggest problem) and I have dropped 9 lbs. in 2 weeks without exercising. I am starting back at the gym next week to see how exercise helps drop the weight off too. I wasn't big on taking medication to lose weight but it's meant just to boost your metabolism and is a starting point for a better lifestyle. I have now started eating better since I don't have that ravenous appetite telling me what to eat. I decide what is healthy to eat and eat when I'm supposed to (even though I haven't even been hungry at all). My nurse practicioner lost 30 lbs on it in 1 month but she was working out and watching what she ate. She only took it for 3 months and is now at her ideal weight. You can only take it for short periods of time because your body will get immune to it. I also heard not to get the generic brand because it does not work as good. Just maybe something for you to look into.

Going to see a nutritionist or to Weight Watchers is probably a good idea. A great author that really helped me understand nutrition better is Tosca Reno. She started working on her weight and exercising in her 40s and is now a swimsuit model. She says that weight is 80 percent what you eat and 20 percent exercise. Good luck!

I have been where you are now. In my experience when I stop loosing the weight, it's because my exercise routine has become boring. Spice it up. Muscles have memory and get used to the same ole same ole. Your muscles will get bored of your workout before you do. As for the diet I have always stuck to a high protein high fiber diet. Lean meats of course and lots of fruits and veggies. You really can't over do on those, fill you up with not a whole lot of calories. I'm not a nutritionist but this is just my experience and things that I have researched and talked to other women about. I hope this helps you out and you can get to your goals!

God Bless!

Hi K.,
I bet you are frustrated. I am NOT a nutritionist. I am very interested in nutrition and try to pay attention to new studies, etc... as I do have my own small health and wellness business, nutrition, weight loss, etc. I have been hearing a bit of buzz this summer about vitamin D levels and weight loss. Some think that if your vitamin D levels are low it is harder to lose weight. Also, I do know people that have increased their magnesium intake to reduce or banish their migraine headaches. I'm just throwing this out as possibly you just need a good calcium supplement that has both vitamin D and magnesium.

Let me know if I can help you further.

Dear K.,

From January 1st to June 30th I walked 300 miles with Leslie Sansone, and I watched what I ate. I lost NOTHING. It was so very frustrating! I had gone to my doctor (for something unrelated) and asked her what could be going on.

She said when I got back from my vacation, to bring in my exercise log for the past 2 months, and my food log for the past 2 weeks. (I had not been keeping a food log - just watching what I ate.)

So, after vacation, this is what I did:

*Wii Active 30 day challenge
*Found how many calories I am supposed to have, and started counting calories during the day

And, you know what? I have lost over 7 pounds and 7 inches in 3 weeks!

My point being - I thought I was eating and exercising good. Apparently, I was not.

Here are my suggestions to you:

1. Start weight bearing exercises
2. Find how many calories you need according to your current weight.
3. Keep a log that details what you eat, and how much you exercise. (It will help tons if you get one of those calorie counting books that tells you how many calories are in food)

You said that you are hungry all of the time. Do you eat enough protein?

Drink v8. Even if you don't like it. Just drink at least eight ounces per day.

Make sure you are getting your fill of fruits and veggies.

Maybe you are not eating enough? There was a time, a few years ago, when I would get so exhausted on my exercise days. Come to find out - I was eating under 800 calories a day - even though I was eating all day! Some healthy fats (olive oil, peanuts, avocados...) go a LONG way!

Good luck to you. Let us know how things go!

Make sure you incorporate some resistance training in with any cardio you do too. That will build lean muscle mass which will raise your metabolic rate. Look for snacks that are high in protein (a few almonds, i.e.)to keep you from feeling starved. Eat lean protein, some carbs and a little fat with your main meals and try to be mindful of portion sizes. Most people underestimate the amount of calories their consuming by 30-40%. Weight watchers is good for helping keep portions under control. you have been doing resistance and cardio all along, make sure you're changing it up every month. Your body gets more efficient (burns less calories) if you do the same thing day after day. If you are weight training make sure you're lifting enough weight to challenge the muscles or they won't change. You should feel a good "burn" in them the last few repetitions. One last thing, as you lose weight the caloric needs of the body decreases so you'll need to eat less as you lose weight to stay in a caloric deficit which results in weight loss. hope this helps. good luck.

I am a very strong believer that staying in shape and thin is a lifetime process and a lifestyle. We all try to lose weight and once we have obtained the goal we tend to slip backward. That has a lot to do with not continuing the healthy lifestyle. It is a continuous struggle (as I know from experience). You won't lose the weight immediately, but you can keep it off by making healthy food choices and staying active. Results of losing weight do not come as fast as gaining weight....so stay motivated and give it a little more time. Sometimes you will not see the results for a few weeks. Don't get down on yourself!!!

I also wanted to comment on the part about being hungry on the days that you work out. That is extremely normal. The true way to fight that hunger is by eating (simple). But, do not overeat or eat a lot in one sitting. Break those meals down into smaller portions about 5-6 times a day. This will also help your metabolism to speed up and in turn help you with your weight control. It may sound crazy, but it REALLY does work.

Good Luck to you in the venture that we ALL explore in life!

My best advice to you is go to Weight Watchers! They will teach you portion control, and what foods are the best and how to tell you how much your body needs. The headaches are from your body telling you it needs something! This will help you cook better and teach your children better choices. We are restraunt eaters and you can do WW eating out too! It does cost, but you are with people with the same goal or problems, the recipe swap is great too! In the long run, cost less than a nutritionist! Plus the support!
Good luck!
