Hi, my family and I just moved to the area 2 days ago. We are originally from the panhandle and have no personal connnections here. I would love to meet some new moms and my son would love to make some new friends. He is a very social 2 1/2 yr old and he is desperately missing his old school pals. I have tons of questions, need lots of advice...pediatricians, mothers day out programs, parks, babysitters, shopping, etc. Any information will be appreciated. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Hi T.,
Where in Birmingham are you? I am in the Vestavia/Cahaba Heights area near the Summit. I would be glad to offer any advice or recommendations, or we could get together at a local park. My son is almost 17 months old.
Good luck,
E.

Hi, I've lived in Pelham about 12 years, and in that time have finally found superb doctors, service people, etc. Some are not in the immediate Pelham area, but if they're not, it's worth the drive! I LOATHE driving extra, but if it means getting what I need, I'll do it. Here's what I can tell you: Dr. Stone @ Vestavia Pediatrics ###-###-#### is WONDERFUL. Also, the practice is big enough to get in whenever you need to (even if you see a different Dr.) and they have some Saturday hours. Dr. Soong @ Alababma Allergy & Asthma Center ###-###-#### is excellent -- for children or adults. For your personal Dr., Dr. Aizenman in Helena ###-###-#### is Super. It's usually a long wait with him, but he's soooo good. Dr. Favor (a lady - yea) for your OB/GYN is great ###-###-####. Another good group is located @ Shelby Baptist - they're much closer, but they're all men. That's Drs. McKenzie & others. For dentist, go to Dr. Crunk in Montevallo ###-###-####, or Dr. Turner in Pelham (off of Hwy 31). If you specifically want a Pediatric Dentist, try Dr. Anglin in Hoover or Dr. Shannon in N. Shelby Co. Even though your son is too young for this now, if you ever need a child psychologist, try Drs. Brooks, Barnes, or Patterson at Children's Behavioral Health in Homewood.
Finally, let me save you some BIG TIME money in advance. If you ever need plumbing, call Jerry ____@____.com'll come out day or night, and you'll be shocked at how little he charges. Similarly, for A/C or heating repair, call Mr. Laney @ Southern Comfort Heating and Air ###-###-####). Both of these men will save you hundreds of dollars, and do top-quality work.

Hi T., Im K. and we moved here about two and a half years ago. (Im only now getting involved!) I recently joined a meetup group called the Chubby Cherubs. They organize play dates and activities for parents and pre-school aged children (story time at the library, play time at the park). I havent been a member for very long but so far Im pleased with it. If you go to meetup.com you can just type in chubby cherubs and join the group! I use Greenvale Pediactrics located in The Tower building next to Baptist Shelby Hospital. Our doctor is Dr. Bashinsky and we love him. He is a little dry, but he is very thorough and my kids feel comfortable with him. My oldest used to go to mom's day out at First Baptist Alabaster and we really liked it. They also send out baby sitter flyers from people within their church who they know and can trust. I never used anyone but I would if I needed to. Most of the local churches offer mom's day out programs so Im sure you would be satisified with any of them. If you want to chat or have any questions about the are, send me a message and I will give you my email address!

Welcome to Bama, T.! I hope you are enjoying the rainy weather as I write!
I have the perfect thing for you when it comes to activities with your son. I have a ten month old and an almost four year old myself. I know when my oldest was two, I loved getting her involved with other children. Since she was a baby we have been part of a church that has what we call small groups. It is member led groups for anyone and everyone that wants to come. The groups are about anything from Bible study to playgroups for kids. Currently we are a part of two groups, one is on Tuesdays, called Tuesdays with Toddlers and we meet at various places around Birmingham. The other meets on Thursdays and on pretty days meets at Overton Park off of Overton Road.
When it comes to moms day out programs, I am not currently using one. But I know that there are several. One is at Riverchase Methodist Church, which would be somewhat close to your area. The Galleria is a wonderful place to shop because you don't have to get out in the weather, since everything is inside one mall. Other than that we mostly have strip malls. And on the pediatricians: I use Children's Hospital and there are several branches located throughout Birmingham that have pediatricians. The one I currently use is in Roebuck, but we are about to move to a different location closer to Hwy. 280. I hope this helps. If you want more info about anything just let me know!

I have a son, Landon, that will turn 3 in May. Where do you currently live in Birmingham? Where are you from? When you say "Panhandle" I think of Panama City, where I was born and raised. My son goes to a Mothers Day Out program. I feel it is best to pick a mothers day out program that is close to your house. Most churches offer great programs. There are lots of great parks in the area, a Science Center in downtown Birmingham that is fun, the zoo is great etc. I do not belong to a Moms group but I take my kids to fun places several times a week. I have a few friends that we try to get our kids together a couple of times a week to play. My son goes to Greenvale Pediatrics in Hoover by the Galleria Mall. So there again, depending on where you live there are lots of great doctors in the area.

Hey! My name is A. and I have been where you are! Just 2 years ago we moved here from Auburn - we had a 13 mo old son and I was 4 months pregnant with #2 (now 2 yo boy). I stay at home and felt like I had nobody to talk to - I can't tell you how many days I cried and cried. But, God is SO good!!! We go to Liberty Baptist Church in Chelsea and I have found so many great friends there as well as in my neighborhood, Oaklyn Hills. I'd love to invite you to our "Moments for Moms" group at the church the first Friday of every month. It's from 9-11:30, we eat, fellowship, do a craft, enjoy a guest speaker, etc. There is free childcare available and I'm sure your son would LOVE to play with my boys!!! It's a good group of women who are interested in getting and giving encouragment to each other!!! Please call me at ###-###-#### if you need ANYTHING AT ALL!! I'd be more than happy to tell you about the area and who we use (Dr's, MDO, etc.). Take care!!

Welcome to the area! We moved here 2 years ago and we love it!

My kids are older, but I can reccommend some babysitters for you if you want to email me privately.

You can also call the local churches and see if they have MOPS (Mothers Of Pre Schoolers) gruops that meet there. That is a great way to meet others with kids your age.

K.
