My Son Is Starting to Learn to Potty Train and Medical Problems Are in the Way

My son is starting to give an interest in potty training. The problems is lately his #2's are runny all the time for the past 5 days. This is slowing the process down. I've tried probiotics, more milk, cheese, less yogurt, etc. It seems to stay no matter what. I think this has to do with his digestive tract and the fact he just got over a nasty cold a week ago. I'm not sure what other foods I could give him to bind him up without making the situation worse. Please help, natural and medical idea's I welcome.

So What Happened?

My son still has loose #2's but not diarrhea. Even though he still wants to try peeing on the potty which is good. I will be trying the rice, bananas, and toast added to his regular diet and limit his juice intake. He also loves raisins and fig-Newtons so I will limit them for a bit until he regulates out again. I will not add the apples though in any form they give him the runs really bad. Thanks for the several responses. Its sooo nice to know we are not the only ones dealing with this. The idea's really helped.

Try plain white rice, bananas, dry toast & apple sauce. Stay away from high fiber foods as this makes diarrhea worse. Some kids get what they call toddler diarrhea because it can last for 2 weeks or more! So hang in there & put potty training off for a little while.

Hi there,

Probiotics are great, but he won't enjoy the benefits of taking them if he keeps consuming all of that milk and cheese. Feeding him dairy in the wake of a cold will almost certainly prolong his congestion and general discomfort. Plus, milk products are a major culprit when it comes to diarrhea, and the more of them he eats the more trouble he will have. He should probably be tested for dairy allergies, or lactose intolerance. In the meantime, eliminate dairy from his diet so that he can at least get over the cold fully and stop having diarrhea.

Good luck!

My daughter was having similar issues and my sister-in-law, who is a nurse, told me she has found, as long as you're not actually sick, the best way to get back to "normal" is simply to eat the way you normally do. I followed that advice and it worked for us. Good luck!

stick to the BRAT diet bannanas, rice, applesauce and toast. dairy can actually make the issue worse. however after a few days of runny bms a young child can get dehydrated. i would also call the pediatrician.
good luck

First take away the dairy. It is probably making the situation worse. Next try the BRAT diet... Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Tapioca. Those will help. His system is just trying to clean the mucous from his body after the cold. It should clear up on it's own in a few days.

Have you considered dairy allergies? It may be that the extra dairy is making his diarrhea worse. Bananas and rice might help with the loose stools. Maybe he just has a virus and it will clear up soon.

Stop with the milk products and go with the BRAT (Banana, Rice, Apple, Toast) diet. Plain pasta works well too. However, if this continues, call your pediatrician to make sure there isn't anything serious going on with his digestive tract.

I had already decided to recommend the BRAT diet when I read your other 2 responses. So, I third that response. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. You can also give crackers and somewhat bland protein like chicken breast. Dairy may or may not be contributing to your problem, but you may want to try cutting it out completely until this passes in case it is. Give pedialyte to replace fluids lost due to the loose stools. Yes, he had a cold. But, earlier, my 18 month old had a virus that caused a cold and gastrointestinal problems at the same time. Then I got it, too. It lasted a while, but wasn't horrendous. You could also google the BRAT diet to see what other options that fit into that category are out there. Good luck. It is never fun with an under-the-weather child. I would hold off on the potty training until this is all over and done with.

We use bananas "to bind" and avoid pears, plums and apples, which seem to contribute to the runs. We empty a probiotic capsule into the breakfast drink or cereal we give our kids in the AM. We sometimes give up to 2 doses a day when we don't see any resolution. I hope this helps you.

Hi A..

Doctors recommend a diet they call the BRAT diet. (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast) AVOID dairy products the fats are hard to digest. It is true that the active cultures in yogurt are helpful to the digestive system just be sure you are not purchase one the kids brands which are really little more than candy. Sugar will also aggravate the bowel and encourage yeast overgrowth. Provide plenty of water.

Additionally, it is possible that your son is lactose intolerant. If that is the case, the extra dairy products will just cause more diarrhea. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve soon or if you are concerned that he is losing too much fluid and at risk for dehydration consult your pediatrician.

We have run into similar setbacks with our daughter (now 5yrs). She was also recovering from a slight cold and she had loose bowel movements. She would have accidents often because she control herself enough to make it to the potty in time. One of our pediatricians recommended the "BRAT" diet which consisted of bananas, rice, apple sauce and dry toast to help bind her up a bit. We also avoided dairy of any kind. And, we had to keep her hydrated with water and very diluted juice. Thankfully for us it took care of the issue for us. Best of luck!

Make sure you aren't overdoing juice. Switch to water for a while. Juice can give kids loose stools. You may also just want to wait it out for a few day, giving him water and bananas, rice applesauce and toast (the BRAT diet for the runs), until the virus he had gets out of his system. Above all, make sure that you don't make a big deal about potty training right now, you could easily create a sense of failure since he can't really control that right now. Just concentrate on the pee part for now and go with the flow (no pun intended) If it doesn't go away after a few more days, I would suggest a visit to your pediatrician. Good luck!

Hi

The brat diet might help: bananas, rice, apple (juice, sauce) and toast. Red meats also slow things down.

Yes, I 7th or 8th the BRAT diet. Just be careful he doesnt get dehydrated. And I would push the toilet training aside until he is better. I have seen in the past my kids having something like a cold virus and once it clears they get the poopies too. If it lasts for much longer though, I would run it by the DR's office. Hope he gets better and Good luck with the toilet training!!!
