I have a 5 year old son with autism that is still not fully potty trained. I am having a hard time getting him to poop on the tolet and sometime pee too. I have a 3 year old that follows his brothers actions which is not good anyway but now we are trying to potty train him. We have been working on it for some time and he does the same thing as his brother. He will not poop on the potty and pees at random times. Potty training is hard anyway but I seem to have an added problem. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please I will take anything right now. Thanks to you all!

Will they at least sit on the potty? If they will, give them a 1/2 tsp dose of Miralax. It might take a few times but once they get used to going on it you can stop the Miralax. Miralax is used to get the body (and mind) in the potty rhythum. Works for my daughter.

potty train them together i know it hard for the 5yr. but i think it might work for both. you are blessed with this child. also i think that getting the older chidren to help is a good idea too.tell the 5yr he is helping little brother be a big boy. i know he undrstands things so maybe it will work for both. i have child with cerbal palsy with seizure disorder he is 21yrs. and i know where you are coming from on this. god does give us more than we can handle. mine will never walk or talk.

Hi A., i have been thinking about your question for a few days. I am a grandmother and also work at an elementaty school and see 500 different kinds of kids every year. I think as your younger boy is around other kids more and more, he will outgrow following your autistic son and do more age appropriate things. Does he go to preschool? It may help him to relate to his peers, even if it is only two or three days a week. Good luck, God bless. L.

BLESS YOU!!!! It takes such a special mommy to have an autistic child. I don't have one myself, but have interpreted for several. I know taht Meredith College in Raleigh has one of the premier autism programs around. They would probably have some resources for you. I think they also work with siblings.

Wow A.! You are sure to be a very busy Mom, to say the least! Have you tried getting your 3 year old to be more like his bigger brothers? Can you get the 11 and 14 year olds to take him under their wings, so to speak. It could possibly help with the potty training.

I think it is great that your 3 year old obviously looks up to his 5 year old brother. You are obviously doing a good job raising them. God bless and good luck.

I totally agree with the others who suggest enlisting the help of the 11 and 14 year old brothers.

Any time Dad or either of the big brothers goes into the bathroom, he should take the 3 year old in with him. This could be some of "their special time together" and they should use this as part of their "bond" with the youngest.

Good luck!

I have a cousin (now pushing 40, with a bachelors degree, a wife and three kids) who has cerebral palsy. He was the oldest child, and so when the next one came along, she potty trained by about age 2 and was walking and talking normally. By watching her, he figured things out better and got on the right track with all those things (he had tons of intervention and therapy as well). I know autism is completely different, but the same principle might apply.

I used the book Toilet Training in Less Than a Day with my second son when he was 27 months, after trying on and off for 6 months. It worked like a charm in less than a day. I only wish I had known about the book with my first son. The method was originally developed for toilet training retarded adults, but then was modified to use with small children. It's worth a shot; you can find it on amazon. I ran across another book on amazon called Toilet Training for Individuals with Autism or Other Developmental Issues. Good luck!

Maybe your husband could take your 5 year old to a relative's to visit for a day, or at least entertain him in a separate room with the door shut, and you could focus on your 3 yr (enlisting the help of your older 2 kids - maybe offer a reward to all 3 if the 3 yr old gets potty trained). Then you could buy that book some people swear by that helps you to potty train in one day http://www.amazon.com/Potty-Train-Your-Child-Just/dp/0743...

I have a teenage highly functional autistic son and belong to the yahoo group, reversingautism. I would like to invite you to join as the owner of this group, Andrea, provides many inexpensive and effective tips for healing our children. Many people on this group say they spent thousands elsewhere to no avail and then made great progress with Andrea's suggestions.

Good luck!
