Mederma

Any moms out there ever use Mederma for kids and what was your experience? My daughter fell on Thanksgiving and has a combination scratch/'road rash' on her cheek of all places. I am terrified this will leave a scar on her face. I am using an ointment right now, though the scratch has formed a scab. I don't know that there will be a scar, but I can't get the thought out of my head. Her doc says they will examine her as it heals and let me know about treatment, but the scar cream won't harm her, so I could try it. Any advice would be appreciated.

My daughter had a little scar on her face from a fall at school and we used it and it did go away. It took a few weeks of using it after the scab was gone and the scar appeared to go away though.

Yes, I used it on my son for an injury to his face - no sign of the scar. I also used it after my second C-section & there's barely a scar there, either.

My daughter fell and trashed the entire side of her face when she was about 7 years old, years before mederma was around. It healed beautifully, but caution her not to pick at it or scratch as it heals.
At her age the skin heals very quickly (we have had experience with stitches also). Good luck

We used it on my son after his open heart surgery. We applied it every time he changed his diaper for about 4-5 months after surgery, if I remember correctly. His scar is now very flat and is almost translucent (very pale). As long as the skin is closed / healed, I'd say start applying it every time you think about it for at least a couple weeks.

The other thing I've heard about scarring is that you should be very careful to shield it from the sun for several years. So apply sunscreen, even if just on a sunny day of sledding in the snow.

My older daughter had a cyst removed this summer on her collar bone in front by her neckline. It has left a bigger scar then we were told so I bought her some Mederma. It left a rash on her skin and hurt she said. She is 10.

My sister told her that the doctor told her when her son got a cut on his face to rub it daily that it is the rubbing more then the maderma that is making it less of a scar.

So, I wouldn't bother if I were you.

My sister uses it on my niece. I think she was 3 when she started. She had burn scars on her chest and it was already a year since the accident. It has made a difference in the severity of teh scars. If the doc thinks it won't hurt, I would say go ahead and use it. I am sure using it while the scar is new will give even better results than an old one-though I don't really know. I personally would wait until the injury heals a bit more, especially since it just happened.

My son split his head open above the eye and between his eyes (2 cuts one requiring 4 stitches and the other requiring 6), we used mederma after they began to heal and now you can barely see them. I say it works. Use it consistently for at least 2 weeks

BTW, I just read some of the other posts and they say about using the Mederma 6-8 times per day, we used it maybe twice a day and it made a difference.

Our ped. said none of the treatments really work, it certainly won't hurt to use them but the best thing is to massage the scar to break up any scar tissue. We are in the same boat, my two year old had seven stiches in her head a few weeks ago! Good Luck

I used it for a cut on my son's head, and it seemed to work well. The cut was very bad. You can still see where it was, but only if you really look for it. I would recommend trying it. The only thing that is difficult about it is that you have to use it multiple times a day for several weeks. Good luck.

I used Manuka honey and it worked well for my son's scar, Vitamin E also works good.

My 2 year old son fell, got stitches and has a scar on his cheek. I started using Mederma a few months later, it did help and made it paler. I was sorry I didn't start using it sooner. The drawback about it is you have to use it 6-8 times a day and I kept forgetting. It probably has to heal really well first because this isn't a healing ointment, and if she does wind up with a scar, then I would use Mederma. Good luck. Bernie

I have heard that as it heals just the rubbing of the ointment helps. I used vitamin E, the capsules poke a hole in it and put the Oil directly on. I think it is more the massage than the product. Good luck, as my son just took a header into the corner of the wall a few days ago and has a scab now.
