Lincoln Elementary - What Happens After School?

I was considering Lincoln Elementary for my son, but the school office tells me there is no after-school program. What do working parents of Lincoln students do for after-school care (short of hiring a sitter for all those hours--I definitely can't afford that)?

I know the Menomonee Clubhouse is just a couple of blocks away; would it be safe for a third-grader to walk there alone?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses. After further investigation, it looks like I would have to hire someone to take him to the programs at Menomonee, or coordinate with other parents in the same situation. The park district doesn't offer transportation, as far as I can determine. (To clarify, this is Lincoln Elementary in Chicago. It's not as close to the Menomonee clubhouse as I thought.)

They do have an afterschool program called CDC. And im guessing that if you enrolled them into a program somewhere else they will provide transportation from the school to the center. I would see vans/buses with company logos on the sides picking up the kids after school. For Lincoln E.S in Kenosha

If you are talking about Lincoln Elementary in Cedar Lake IN, they have a program for before and after school care called Grad Tots. It used to be $6 a day (which includes both before and after school care till 6:00). 219/374-6025. My son used to go a few days a week. The adults are certified teachers and actually used to help my son with his homework. I'd give them a call.

I have never heard of that clubhouse but I know Lincoln is on a very busy road. I dont know if he would have to cross streets or anything. But I dont think its really a good idea to let him walk alone. HTH

I would recommend calling the school back and ask them if there are any local day care centers that have after school programs. Most day care centers have a bus service and will bring your child to school and back to the center when the day is over. If they do not have any contacts, you could try calling local day care centers and see if they offer any type of bus service to the school of your choice. I know a local park district 2 towns away drops 1 child off every morning at my daughters school. There are also a couple day care busses that drop off kids.

Just wondering if you have a park district? I know ours has a before and after school program. Also some daycare type places like minnee subee (spelling?) have transportation. Not sure how good they are or how much money.
Good luck

To tell you the truth, there is a building just right next to the school(headstart) and if I am not mistaken, they have daycare there. The number there is ###-###-####. Mydaughter just graduated from there(she is 5) but I have a babysitter at my house. You might want to try that number. I hope that it works for you. Do you need anyone to watch him now that school is over? PLease let me know. I am sure that my babysitter(with whom I trust with all of my heart) would be willing to watch him at my house.

Ask the school if they can recommend any neighborhood moms that do afterschool care.

Hi we're in Lincoln and have gone to Menomonee programs. I understand there is an afterschool program around the corner at the church on Orchard and Fullerton which also houses Park Cooperative Nursery. Also, you're right about Menomonee - it's a hike (about 10-15 minutes depending on your speed.) I think carpooling would be the way to go.
