Leather Sofa or Poly/cotton

I have to buy a new sofa and chair. I found a leather set that I really like. I have a 13-year-old and 2 small well-behaved dogs. I have their nails trimmed and dremeled regularly, so there's no scratching (I AM talking about the dogs, not my daughter - LOL). I've never owned leather furniture before. I am also considering a Flexsteel sofa and chair that are covered with 82% poly / 18% cotton. The poly/cotton set honestly is our second choice, but I'm hesitant about the leather only because it's an unknown to me. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Leather, Leather Leather.............

SO easy to keep clean. We have a sofa, loveseat, chair and 2 ottomans in the family area we bought new in 2000 and it looks great.

We have a Natuzzi sofa in upstairs game room that is at least 15 yrs old.

We have our front area with custom made leather sofa and love seat.

We don't regret any of our leather purchases. We have 3 dogs and 1 daughter almost 16.

leather, leather, leather! I would never have anything else. I have a huge dog and I had an ivory leather set that lasted through 5 kidless years, kid years 1-5, an elderly husky and a new giant puppy. So easy to wipe down. Any fabric would have been toast in a year or two.

Leather is nice. And if its the one set your really want then you should get the one you will be happy with. Your child is old enough not to be a worry, and your dogs are well behaved so the upkeep wont be as much as it would be if you had small children.

We have had a family room full of leather furniture for 7 years now, and it looks great still. We have 2 teenaged boys and a dog and cat as well, and we let them (the animals) sit on the furniture, they just have to be respectful just like the kids, LOL. All we do is clean it with a damp cloth and wipe it down with a dry one afterwards and haven't had a bit of trouble ( it is Leather Trend). Also, as well as looking great, it has held up very well too, the cushions are still nice and firm and not droopy, speaks well for the springs and all the "stuff" underneath that we can't see. I think if you spend wisely on a nice leather set you can't go wrong, it will last forever if you take good care of it.

It depends on the type of leather. I used to have a kind of suede like leather soafa - or distressed leather - not sure really how to describe it - but it showed every mark and was a little stressful keeping it looking nice. Once when my ex's family was over and their bratty kids and they were going to be sleeping over - we were covering it with comforters - the father actually said "are you covering that because you are worried about marks from the kids?" WHILE HE WAS SCRATCHING AT IT WITH HIS NAIL TO SEE HOW EASILY IT MARKED! Moisture - such as drool from dogs would make spots and rings also. BUT - the other kind of leather - with a "finish" on it so to speak ....like the seats in my car....love love love it! I have a dog that is over 50lbs - he doesn't like to get on the furniture in the house, in fact, if I put a towel down and try to pull him up to hang out with me at night - he only lasts about 5 minutes and then gets down. I take him in my car all of the time - and his nails never make a mark, any drool or dirt wipes right off! I have a 6 year old - and we travel extensively for my husband's business and we are always in the car on weekends. When I pull her car seat out for any reason - I'm always amazed at what has worked it's way down under there. It never matters - whatever is there it wipes right off and the leather looks like brand new - 6 years and 145,000 miles later!

I bought a housefull of leather furniture about 4 yrs ago. I wished I'd had it when the kids were little and spills and other dirty kid related things happen everyday!

It cleans very easily, anything liquid runs right off, just need a damp cloth so it won't be sticky, but if you 'miss' a spill and it sits it won't stain like fabric.

I also have two dogs who have not been able to scratch or otherwise wound it.

It's weathering beautifully, like the elbows of your favorite 25 year old leather jacket.

I feel it was WELL worth the extra money!

We bought leather furniture 8 years ago when the kids were babies. It still looks and feels great. We have 7 year old twins and a 4 year old (more active than your dogs :) and have no scratches, tears or stains. It gets dirty and occassionally (like once every 2 years) I wipe it off with a wet wash cloth.
Our next furniture will be leather too!
