Is My Baby Teething??? - Clearwater,FL

I have noticed that my (almost) four month old baby boy is starting to act a little different. At first we could not put our finger on what his problem was. He was becoming very fussy and extremely ansy!! When we hold him upright (against our shoulder) he trys to head butt us. He has also been talking a whole lot more and also makes these cute but funny faces. He sometimes hits his face with his fists. After talking with a one of my friends (who is a first time Mom as well) she thought that he might be teething. Now, we really think this is what is going on. He seems to be wanting to eat all the time too. (Maybe going through a growth spurt as well). He is just so active now, and I feel so bad that he is in pain from the teething. I have tried to massage his lower gums with my finger now and then, and at first that seemed to distract him. I have also tried Tylenol. That works sometimes. Does anyone else have any suggestions if this indeed is teething? If he is already having this pain going on this early does it mean that he will be a "bad teether?" I hope this is just a phase, my baby is pretty easy going and has not been in the last week!! Thanks for your advice!!!

What can I do next?

Somethings helped my daugther when she was teething but she was still in a lot of pain and very irritable. I used teething tablets, orajel and I would soak a towel in water and put it in the freezer for her to suck on. All of those helped but it was still very difficult. When she got her 1 yr molers she would only sleep for 10-15 minutes at a time (throughout the day or night) and screamed almost nonstop for 4 days. It was so much worse then when she was colic and nothing helped besides taking her outside for a walk. Good luck!

I'm sure your baby is teething. My son kevin would litteraly smash his face into us, the couch, his arm, anything. He was an awesome baby, but had a hard time with teething. I highly recommend Hyland's Teething Tablets. They are homeopathic, which I am not into or anything, but they were recommended to me by someone else, and they really work! They dissolve instantly, and they really helped Kevin. You can also use teethers that you put in the fridge (or some in the freezer), or buy one of those little pouch feeders (can find them at babies 'r us) and put crushed ice in it. The more biting down they can do, the quicker the teeth will come in.

Kevin is now 2 1/2 and recently finished getting in his second molars. It's not easy, just keep telling yourself that your baby won't remember any of this. Hang in there!!!

Dear J.,

I am a bit radical with my solutions for babies because I use natural remedies that most probably would not agree with. For teething; take a vitamin E capsule and break it. Put a drop on your finger and rub onto the gum. This causes the swelling to go down. With my daughter I bought cal-mag (calcium magnesium) powder to make with boiling water. If the adult amount was a teaspoon then I made some for the baby that was 1/4 of a teaspoon and put it in water. This really helped to calm her down. They teeth off an on for months.

Hope this helps.

Hi! I agree with the mom who recommended frozen bagels - that is all we used with my son (they were even better than teething rings). He loved to just gnaw away at them; then we'd just pop them back in the freezer for later! My son did not pop his first tooth until nine months but we had symptoms before that. Some babies sleep more when they teeth, mine slept less and nursed more. Good luck, and if his behavior alarms you, don't hesitate to call the doctor (its what they are there for, and they are used to new moms' questions!). Peace.

Babies go through SO many little phases for the first year of life, sometimes it's just impossible to pinpoint the exact problem. I know that both of my boys were teethers early on. Both exhibited signs similar to what you explained with the added bonus (?) of an ENORMOUS amount of drool starting at about 3 months through about 7 or 8 months. My oldest's first tooth appeared at 5 months, my youngest's at 6 months. But symptoms started a lot earlier. Also, both of my boys got a LOT of diarrhea around the times new teeth started coming in... the theory behind that is that with all the drool they have, they swallow a lot of it and the saliva in their bellies gives them diarrhea.
The BEST thing we found that helped us determine whether teething was the problem (as opposed to gas or some other cause) was Hyland's Teething Tablets. They were a life saver with both boys. To the extent that I give them to EVERY new mom at showers... I just tell them, TRUST ME, YOU'LL NEED THEM SOON ENOUGH! And then the thanks come a few months later! LOL.
Anyway, other hits with my teethers included cold or frozen teething rings, frozen bagels to chew on (they CANNOT choke, because they CANNOT tear pieces off, trust me... mine tried!), and a very simple and cheap cure... a cold wash cloth to gnaw on. Tylenol is awesome too, if it's necessary.
Good luck and best wishes!

I have just a few suggestions that worked with my son. Anbesol for babies is great, cold/frozen teething toys, a cold rag to chew on, maybe some pedialyte ice pops. Hope this helps, stay patient, it will be over shortly.

Hi J.. I have one word for you. Humphreys. let me tell you I'm on my second teether and I wish I knew about these babies when my son was teething. My daughter started drooling really bad at 3 1/2 mths. At her 4mth checkup the doctor said that there wasn't any teeth yet, Well I beg to differ. She just turned 5 mths on the 23 and has cut her two bottom teeth. She was fussy and wouldn't stay asleep for longer than an hour, didn't want to nurse ect. I tried all the tricks. Frozen wash cloth. Tylenol. even the old Clover on the gums. My friend told me about humpherys and it was a God sent. They're all natural and have chamomile in it to help them settle down. I don't feel bad about giving it to her. tylenol can only do so much. Well there you go, that's my 2 cents. :) Oh ya my experience with the ansiness is that they have gas and are wiggling it out.

My son is 16 months and we never used the teething tablets, but I did find that he responded better to Motrin than Tylenol. And, Motrin lasts 6-8 hours instead of 4-6 hours like Tylenol. Tylenol doesn't work for me either, I have to take Advil, which is ibuprofen like Motrin, so remember that you may have to try a few things to find what works for Ethan. Good luck!

Teething Tablets are good, but please be careful when you shop for them. They do sell them with belladonna in them, and it is addictive. A friend of mine gave them to her daughter, and it got to the point where she would not go to bed with out a teething tablet......she would scream "I want a teething Tablet" Just be careful when shopping for them.

The things that my litleboy liked the best when he was teething was to put a wet wash cloth in the freezer for a while (doesn't take long for them to freeze-small baby one). I think the teething rings are ok but they can break easily when they are frozen because most of them aren't actually supposed to be frozen only refrigerated. Of course when those teeth do start popping out they can start popping into that really yucky stuff inside! BLAH! So the wash cloth thing and also would use frozen french fries or other frozen food would work too that would easily dissolve. Of course your baby is still little so the food part may not work for you yet. It's funny though cause my little boy is now 4 and EVERY time we make frech fries he asks to have one right out of the bag. Why not? It's already pre-cooked and it doesnt have all the extra stuff on it from actually cooking it, wheather baking or frying!LOL! Good luck. Know it can be a VERY hard time. There is also baby orajel(nighttime formula, little stronger an longer lasting. If you've ever tried that stuff you know it doesnt usually last very long.) that we would use if he got REAL bad.

Possibly. My daughter got teeth at 4.5 mo and my son (4.5 mo) is showing signs that he's teething as well. He's fussy and biting everything. Although, he head butts when he has a tummy ache.

You can tell if they are teething, the gums will be white. Anyhow, ask the pharmacist for Hurricaine gel. It works great and it's what the dentists use to numb you before they shoot you up with novacaine.

When my daughter started teething at 3months old she slobbered a lot. She is 14 months old now and is getting her 2 year molars and is still slobbering alot. One thing that caused alot of fussiness for her was she knew what she wantted and her theeth hurt alot so she kicked and hit even at 4 months, but she couldn't comunicate with me to say "mommy it hurts, fix it". when tylenol and rubbing her gums didn't help i put a DAMP washcloth in the freezer then let her suck and chew on it. Also, there are teehing tablets that you can pick up at Walgreens or CVS that you rub on there gums. It really helped, And some are made from all natural stuff. Hope things get better for your little man.

I just want to go along with another mom and say that the Teething Tablets are the best. I get mine at Walmart in the baby section. Some drug stores have various kinds as well. Good luck!

J.,
Hi this is J.. I am also a first time mom, to my 4month ol daughter. She actually stated showing signs of teeting at 2 15 to 3 months old. At around 3 months, I started seeing 2 buds on the bottom of her gums. Annabelle doesn't like the taste of Ambesil, I've tried to give it to her twice & both times, she cried so much she threw up. I talked to her pediatrician, she recommended homeopathic teething tablets. I use Little Teethers teething tablets. They are absolutley wonderful. They dissolve instantly and they really help. There's no medicine, like in tylenol or ambesil. Ambesil actually can harden the gums, making teething longer and more painful. Hope this helps.

J.,

I don't know if this is teething or not but I have to tell you that I think you read my mind and wrote my question. My son is doing all of the EXACT same things that your son is and what's even weirder is that he is 3 1/2 months old and his name is Ethan. What a weird coincidence. I think it probably is teething. I feel really bad for him because he is usually so mellow and happy, it must really be uncomfortable.

Anyway, hopefully we get some good feedback from more "seasoned" moms.

Good luck

I have to agree with the last poster... Hylands Teething Tablets are the BEST thing out there!!!!!! They are a natural herb and taste like a little sugar pill, and are the best thing ever made!!!

I would try the tablets and see how he reacts...It may help enough that the "weird" behavior subsides...It also could be that at this age they are alot more interactive...hence why so many moms join playgroups starting at this age...my son started popping out teeth at 4 months...2 at a time! So teething is a good theory...you can also give your Ped. a call and just ask what they think might be going on...They may just do what you are doing...educated guesses...only YOU know your child, and what may be going on...

The head butting and hitting himself may be reactions to teeth popping thru...each kid reacts differently...this may be hurting him alot and pressure may be helping him, so he does this....Hylands Teething Tablets work through their system to reach under the gums and numb nerves and help calm kids to help ease the teeth coming through....

Frozen waffles, Ice pops (with the plastic on), cold carrots, frozen washcloths, and of course, teething rings can all help...but keep in mind that some kids like HEAT and not cold, so if your child refuses the cold things, warm up a washcloth and see how he likes that...with the waffles, carrots and such, just watch for chunks and pieces so he does not swallow them....*HUGZ* I wish you the best of luck thru this hard time
