Insomnia During First Trimester?

I'm really fatigued and am almost 7 weeks pregnant...I know I wasn't this tired with my first (probably because I was so excited to finally be pregnant), and it makes sense that I'm more exhausted now because I'm chasing around a 16 month old all day...and one who wakes up around 4:45 each and every morning. Not fun.

I crawl in to bed by 8 some nights...if I can really push myself, 9...but never any later. However, like clockwork, my body seems to be waking around 2/2:30 and I'm not falling back in to a restorative, deep sleep. We do have a major upcoming move to Europe, but I haven't been too anxious about that so I doubt that's the reason. Anyone else experience this? Did it pass after a while?

Thanks!

Oh my gosh, yes! I'm pregnant with my third, and I had no insomnia whatsoever with my twins. But, from the moment I found out I was pregnant, I had insomnia for close to a month. It did pass for me around 8 weeks, and now I sleep soundly through the night. Good luck to you!

Just had our son 2 months ago and went through the entire first trimester with what you're going through then at 12 weeks went to the hospital because I was not feeling well. My OB put me on Benadryl every night. I was hesitant to take it then at 24 weeks went into Labor and scared the hell out of me. My doctor persisted I take the benadryl because I would fall asleep at 8 or so but wake up at 2 or so and not sleep. I too have now a 27 month old at the time he was 18 months. So I was on the same page with you. Ask your doctor if you can take Benadryl. It really really really worked. They aslo said tylenol Pm.

This exact same thing happened to me in the first trimester and again at the end of the 2nd trimester. It does seem to pass. My doctor told me I could take Benadryl to help sleep, but the pharmacist recommended Unisom instead because it doesn't leave you feeling as groggy when you wake up. I only took it a couple of times but it really did help. Also make sure that your thyroid levels are being checked and are normal since this issue can be caused by your thyroid being off.

sometimes you're anxious and don't realize it. When I was teaching a group of sixth graders years ago I had a horrible case of insomnia. I didn't think I was stressed at the time, but looking back I realized they were one of the WORST group of students I had ever had and it was taking its toll on me mentally.

Try laying still and resting even if you're not sleeping. I know it gets so boring but you don't want to get up and do something stimulating like watch TV or get on the computer. You might try a glass of milk or a banana-- maybe you're hungry. I woke up a lot in the night during my pregnancy. I found if I had a snack it helped me go back to sleep faster. If you can, try taking an evening walk and then a warm bath to help relax you. Don't worry-- it's temporary.

I'm 33 weeks and still having insomnia! I hope yours subsides soon. All I can think about is how I'm not going to get any sleep after the baby gets here and I'm not getting any now. Uggg.

Oh, with my last 2 pregnancies I was so so tired but I could only sleep during the day. I would lay there for hours trying to sleep and no luck. It'll pass. Congrats on the pregnancy!

I had a very hard time staying asleep, even when my other 2 were sleeping fine, during the first trimester. I'm almost to my 3rd with baby #3 with poor sleep, but that is my toddler now waking up at night again once in a while. I also find I wake up around the same time even when I don't have to go to work, so I just try really hard to cat-nap when I can.

yeah it's normal. I am 21 weeks pregnant and I still have it. It's like I'm tired during the day but I can't fall asleep until around 11 and even then I toss and turn. Some nights I can't sleep until around 1 or 2. And I don't get to sleep in cause my 4 year old has preschool in the mornings etc. I have heard it can be common while pregnant but this is my third baby and the first time with this problem. I know it is safe to take unisom so I have taken that a few times but maybe only 3 or 4 times cause I don't like taking anything but prenatals while pregnant. So if you really feel like you need some sleep you could try that.
