Increasing Supply

I've been exclusive pumping for my son since birth (he'll be 8 months this month). He's always eaten a lot, so I initially tried taking fenugreek and more milk plus to increase my supply. That didn't work, so I started taking Reglan, pretty much consistently. This worked for awhile, but when I started back to work, my supply dropped. I understand that's pretty normal. Without the Reglan, I can only pump maybe 1-2 oz a side per pumping. My son eats more like 6 oz a feeding now that we've started solids. He's gone through my entire freezer stash. Basically, I'm not producing as much as he's eating. My doctor will not renew my prescription of Reglan because she doesn't like people to be on it long-term. Anyone have any other suggestions to increase supply, or do I bite the bullet and do formula?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses! I've been getting less and less since my presciption ran out, so after lots of consideration, I'm starting to reduce pumping sessions and gradually stop. It makes me a little sad, but we had a good run.

When I go back to work, this always happens to me (decrease in supply). when i called the bfing consultants the first time it happened, they laughed at me when I mentioned fenugreek and said there is no magic pill that will increase my supply. The only way to do so is to increase demand. What that meant is that I would have to pump every two hours (as opposed to every three like I had been doing) and always for the same amount of time (10 minutes) regardless of if anything was coming out. You don't get results right away. it usually took a week for me. Good luck!

increase your water intake- a lot

eat as much oatmeal as you can stand (old fashioned not instant)

I also heard drinking gatorade helps too!

good luck!

congrats on pumping for 8 mos!!! Awesome job! Pumping is HARD work!!!

Is your son on solids? you could try doing formula in a cup at meal times and then keep up the pumping for other feeds. Do what you feel is best in your heart!

Congratulations that you made it this long. I was only able to go less than 3 months before I couldn't produce enough and the fenugreek never worked for me.

It might be time to bite the bullet and do formula if you aren't producing enough.
