Does anyone have any advise on how to get shoes on my soon to be 14 month old daughter? She's been walking for a couple of months now and I have a little pair of leather shoes with elastic that she wears when we go out. Now that the weather is colder and wetter, I would like to let her play outside, but can't get her into any shoes with harder soles. She curls up her feet. I have tried dozens of different kinds of shoes, but nothing seems to work. Is there a place I can push on my daughters foot or something to stop her from curling her toes? Is this something she'll eventually grow out of?
I've heard if you massage the back of the leg/calf it gets them to relax the foot enough to slip the shoe on.
Try the stride rite shoes, they are made for the stages that your daughter is in, plus they are cute, maybe you could hype on how cute they are etc... and make it a big deal, kids always like that.

I have just been talking to some experts about this. Both of my kids have extremely sensitive feet. FOR US, I have learned it is a sensory issue. (It hurts them much more than it would hurt us to wear shoes.)
I'm not saying that you have a serious problem here--just that your daughter is avoiding pain, rather than being obstinate. I would mention this to your doctor. For buying shoes, I suggest some boots made of fleece or perhaps some Uggs-type shearling boots to keep her warm. If she really wants to play in the snow, she might need to decide if she can tolerate the snowboots necessary for her to do this. Otherwise, I would not push playing outside. Walks in the stroller satisfy my kids. She should grow out of this. My oldest one did, but he was about 2 1/2 years old when he did.

try looking into preschoolians brand shoes. they are made in stages and have boots with flexible, but protective soles for her stage of walking. the web site also explains how to deal with the curling up thing and how to get the proper fit. they would do great for walking outside in this weather, but I wouldn't put on moonboots for playing in the snow until next year when her gait is established and her ankles are strong enough.
