It may be stress that is causing it. In that case stop worrying about it, and do something to relax.

My daughter is also 6 months old and I'm going through the same thing with my hair - it was literally coming out in clumps in the shower! From what I've read, there's not a lot we can do to keep the hair from falling out, but supposedly the shedding tapers off by the end of the first year. Have you tried getting a haircut? My hair was really long and I recently cut a few inches off and found that the shedding is not nearly as bad now...or at least it's less noticeable. I know that's not much help but I do know how you feel!

Hi K.,

I had the same thing and it went on for almost a year before it stopped. I was really concerned because my mother has thin hair. Make sure you are on a good vitamin and are eating a well balanced diet.
Take care,

Hi
I actually went to a dermatologist about 6 months after my 4 year old was born because I was panicking over how much hair I had lost. He told me that it isn't that I was losing an abnormal amount of hair now, but that while pregnant, you don't lose as much hair because of hormones. Then about 6 months postpartum when the hormone levels return to normal, all the excess hair begins to fall out. I had the same thing happened after my 10 month old was born too. And my hair has just finally returned to normal this time. The difference this time is that I actually cut my hair quite short because I got sick of it the this time around and I really like the short cut.
Good Luck and hope that helps!
J.

Hi K.,
Yup, I lost lots of my hair at about the same time. I lost in the front, kind of like a receeding hairline. It is growing back and now just sticks out! My sister lost lots of hair too! Don't worry too much about it. Also it might have started if you cut back on nursing. I think that's what prompted mine to start falling out. I've talked to lots of women who have lost their hair after having babies!

I had the same problem when my daughter was about 3 months old. Like you, I have "an enormous amount of hair". Even so, I found it extremely distressing as handfulls of hair would fall out daily. I know that some hair loss is normal after having a baby, but this was beyond that. My chiropractor at the time (also treats with natural remedies) said my hair was falling out due to a Vitamin B deficiency (caused by having a baby). I started taking supplements and my hair stopped falling out within the next week.
Also, it does grow back! I think I have even more hair now if that is possible!

Yeah, it's normal, and should stop soon. Just make sure you put a screen over your bathtub drain! You'll lose enough to make a new puppy by the time it stops. Make sure you keep a check on babies toes. A lot of my hair ended up in the laundry, and would get in the baby clothes, and wrapped around feet and such. Both of my younger sons ended up with hair wrapped very tightly around their toes. So just keep a check when you are changing diapers. My hair fell out like that for about 6 weeks. When it happened after my third child was born I cut my hair so what I found would at least be shorter.

Hi K.,

My hair also starting coming out in clumps at around the 6th month marker. I remember pulling it out while in the shower and having this big glob by the end of the shower to throw in the trash. It was gross and unnerving but it did stop and everything went back to normal after a couple of weeks I think.

I also had this problem after my son was born. My Dr did some blood work and found my thyroid was off. I started medicine and haven't had any more problems! I'd see the dr and have them do some tests...the least it could do is rule out problems! Good luck!

Hi K.,
Not to worry this is only temporary.. because of hormonal change is pregnancy normal hair loss is prevented during that time, so its like your body's playing catch up! Some things you can do: use apple cider vinegar and sage tea as a rinse to help hair grow, green teas can also prevent hair loss, be careful in using products on your hair that are not natural-use all natural or ones that are ph balanced. Aslo eat more soy products-if not allergic, soy foods seem to inhibit the hormone implicated in the process of hair loss. I'm a holistic health counselor so if you need any more advice you can e-mail me... good luck!

Go to your local health store and get yourself a vitamin called Biotin-you take 1 a day and all you need to do is be sure and take it with one of your daily meals. Biotin supports skin and hair health. My older sister has suffered with hair loss for a couple years now, and her doctor sent her to a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss, he told her it had nothing to do with family genetics, but that she was anemic and this is most likely the cause, but yu do not have to be anemic, I started taking it, just because I found my hair was thinning a little. It worked for me!
