Freaking Out: Question About When I Should Start My Cycle Again.

On November 3rd I gave birth to a wonderful baby boy by c-section. Right before Christmas I went back for my 8 week checkup (which really was at around 7 weeks). My doctor informed me that I would probably be starting my menstrual cycle again at any time and that most women who have had c-sections generally start theirs around 8 - 10 weeks after. This Friday is 10 weeks and nothing yet! I have been on my birth control pills for about 2 weeks now and I know that they might have something to do with it too but I am extremely paranoid that I may be pregnant again.

My question: Has any one else had this problem and when should I get a test? I just don't know if this is normal or not.

What can I do next?

Are you breastfeeding? Typically if you breastfeed your period doesn't come back right away. I went 12 months without one after my son was born.

That would depend on whether you are breast feeding or not you should not have a cycle while breastfeeding

I totally agree with what the other ladies said that's pretty much what I was going to advise, but for your peace of mind I would suggest to take a test anyways. I used to be quite irregular then I got "on track" and when I would be "late" I would always take one just to be sure because I seemed to be on a regular schedule. I have probably spent a decent amount of money on tests that didn't need to be taken other than for my peace of mind. So go ahead and take it for your peace of mind, however I agree that IF you are breastfeeding and along with your birth control and the major life change your body just went through (they say it truely takes the body a year to recover from things like this) your body is just trying to remind itself what the routine is again.

I had a c-section and did not start my cycle back for 6 months. BUT, I was nursing exclusively that entire time. No solds and my baby did not like bottles or pacifiers. Nursing CAN lengthen the time before your cycle returns. Of my friends, I have had friends who have started their period anywhere from 6 weeks to over one year post partum. So, unless you are not nursing at all, I would not even begin to worry about it. Even if you are nursing, I would wait a few more weeks to be concerned.

S.,

If you are taking BC pills, just wait until the sugar pills kick in. You are probably just fine. If you are taking your pills on a regular basis, your chances of getting pregnant are very slim. Also, if you add breast feeding on top of that, your chances are even less. So, I doubt you are pregnant again.

Congrats on your little one!!!!!

I was not breastfeeding nor was I on birth control pills but my first post-partum period didn't arrive until about 15 weeks, so I wouldn't worry. Also, the birth control pills will keep your period away until you have taken the full three weeks of pills, so I would wait until you get to the placebos to worry. If you don't get your period 2-3 days after you start the placebos, then you could test.

You can get cheap tests at several of the area dollar stores (DollarTree carries them). It's only a buck for some peace of mind.

Congrats on your new little one!

CONGRATS!!!
I didn't have a c-section but I do know that you are very fertile right now.Are you nursing your baby? If this is your first child then I know that your doctor has advised you that you are very fertile at this point and probraly for the rest of your days. It is going to be really easy for you to get pregnant again. Be careful with that. I would get a test just to help my mind a lil bit and that will solve a lil bit for now! Good Luck!
Sincerely,
FShaw

I think it depends on whether you breastfeed or not. I breast fed (and had a c-section) and didn't get my period until 14 months afterwards which is very normal. I've known some moms to get theirs much earlier, but this is not typical. Not sure where your Dr got this c-section business. I've never heard that before in my life.

Congratulations on your beautiful baby boy, who was born on my birthday! :-) My question to you is "Are you breasfeeding him?"

If you are breastfeeding your periods may not return for up to 2 years, if you're lucky. AND if you are nursing on demand (that means anytime, anywhere, even at night) then it is a pretty good pregnancy control as well. Check out www.askdrsears.com great site!

One note, the pill can effect your milk production, just be aware.

Take care and give him lots of hugs!

Are you breastfeeding? If so, you may not start your period until a couple of weeks after you stop and your milk dries up. I breastfed my daughter until she was 7 mos. old and I started my period a few weeks after I stopped breastfeeding. She was born in Sept. 05 and I didn't start my period until July 06. (I also had a c-section.)

If you are not breastfeeding, then you should probably just do an at-home pregnancy test, so you can stop worrying so much. Childbirth and surgery causes so much change in our bodies that it may be just your stress level causing the delay of your period.

Good Luck!

Are you nursing? If you are nursing, most women do not have a cycle until they have weined the child off. I just had my first one last month and my son is almost a year old. Be very careful if you are being sexually active so quickly after having a child. I have known people to get pregnant too quickly after the last birth and their baby had serious problems. Just be very careful! I hope all turns out well. Also remember that it takes birth control a little while to kick in, but it is not 100% accurate.

God Bless,

Hi S.!
I had my son by csection also. I started my cycle immediately after & it lasted for about 2 months. When it ended, it pretty much when right back on my normal schedule. I wouldn't worry until I knew I had something to worry about, but you might want to see what your doctor has to say about that. Good luck, (& hey, enjoy it while you still can!!!) D.

Are you nursing? If so that can delay your period. I didn't get mine for nine months after my c-section. Good luck.
