Fall/winter Sleep Clothes/blankets for 12-18 Month Old?

Hi there,

I'm wondering what our one year old will be sleeping in this fall/winter? She used the sleep sacs last fall/winter, but didn't use anything all summer because it was so hot. We just started with the light-weight sleep sac again but she seems to be getting tangled up in it a bit, even though it looks like the right size. Or should she just be in a heavy one-piece with feet and no blanket/sac? I can't wait for the day we can tuck her in under a cozy blanket, but I'm afraid she'll kick it off and/or get tangled in it. She's never slept with a blanket so I'm a bit afraid to introduce it, but if not now, then when?

Thank you!

In the winter/fall, my boys slept in footie pajamas until they were about 4 years old. I still think they're the best!

Carter's and Children's Place have really nice light weight and heavy footy pajama's. If you don't want to use blanket, I would buy those.

One of my friends made me a small afghan blanket that my baby sleeps with. I was worried as well about putting a blanket on my baby. Now that I use the afghan I feel so much better because it has all of the holes in it, and I know that even if it some how covers his face, he will still be able to breathe.

Hello! I think you can definately ditch the sleep sac, I don't think mine lasted past a month or two. My son is 20 months (almost) and we have him in footed pajamas, and he has a blanket. I don't think a blanket is a problem, as long as it isn't overwhelmingly big or thick. We have a really soft fleece type blanket that he has throughout the day. We also check on him right before we go to bed (he goes down 7/7:30 and we go to bed around 11) to re cover him, because inevitably he will be laying on the blanket. Once they are in that deep sleep, they tend to squirm less. You can always also had layers under the sleeper if you are not wanting to add a blanket, but concerned abput the temp. Also, for times when it's not quite warm enough for the winter fleece footed jammies, Children's Place sells some very nice lighter weight footed pajamas. Good Luck! It's a fun age :-)

since your duaghter is getting mobile, I would suggest putting her in the footed blanket sleeper pajamas. However, you should get her baby used to a blanket because eventually she will not like wearing footed pajamas either.

Buy one of those lightweight Carter baby blankets that is satin on one side and microfur on the other. The satin will slide off of her instead of entangling her if she is really active, but she will get used to having a blanket. When she doesn't wear the blanket sleepers any longer, then "graduate" up to a heavier blanket.

At that age, I think they move around too much for a sleep sack (at least mine did). This is a perfect age to introduce a blanket. If it's the right size to fit in a crib (toddler size), she's unlikely to get tangled in it, and if she does at least she can wiggle free better than in a sleep sack. She might kick it off. My daughter is 5 now and still tends to kick off her blanket. If you're worried about her being warm enough if she kicks off (or doesn't use) a blanket, then I definitely recommend the warm footie pajamas. On the coldest nights, we'd have our kids wear their socks inside them, and when they were young enough, they wore a onesie as well. You can always just try the blanket and see how it goes. She might surprise you.

Hi H.. For winter footed sleepers are the best thing ever! Make sure and get the soft kind and not the cheap kind. The cheap kind get really scratchy. The best sleeper we had was sooo soft I think it was still a Carters but the material was so much nicer..just look around on ebay..there's tons of stuff there!! Good luck!

I put my kids in the sleepers and then put a receiving blanket or two over them. When it is very cold then I put a pair of thin jammies on and cover them up with the sleeper.

There is a product called blankeze. It is a wearable blanket similar to the sleepsack. It is sleeveless and has legs / no feet. I had some for my 12 month old, but i was a little dissapointed because the material was so heavy that I found it hard to dress her, because I wanted to put her in a long sleeve onesie and thought the blankeze was just to much. It may work great for you depending on your winter weather.

the carter's blanket fleece pj's are perfect. they stay warm just in case they kick there blankets off. and you can give your daughter a blanket. she will be fine. i think that the main concern when they were really young is that they may suffocate, but she is old enough to move. :)

My son is 2 now but last year we did start putting him in 1 piece pajamas with feet in the winter. As soon as he was mobile (crawling, etc.) he did not like the sleep sacks because of the tangling issue you mentioned. Plus as he got older and wanted to pull himself to a standing position in his crib it got worse. I had also read somewhere in a magazine that sleep sacks shouldn't be used any more once they got to that point since they could fall over and hit their head on their crib. There are some nice warm 1 piece footed pajamas out there so you don't have to worry about using a blanket or any other covering. Good luck!

My three year old loves sleeping in his footie jammies as we call them. He occasionally will sleep in 2 piece jams but much prefers the footies. If you are not a Wal-Mart boycotter you can get fleecy footie jammies made Just One Year which is Carters for only 6.82 cents each. I ordered them online and had them shipped free to the Mountain View store and they emailed me whe it was there and I went and got them. He also starts out with a flannel blanket that my friend made him before he was born. She took two layers of flannel and fused them and added satin trim all the way around. The are larger than the average baby blanket and we love them. Most of the time the blanket ends up rolled off to the side but he is toasty warm in his footies. When it was really cold I would add a onesie under the footies and he was always cozy warm.

Hi H.,
My son was born in September as well. Just turned 1 on Wednesday. We made it....congratulations!

About a month ago we took him out of his sleep sack. He is in a pair of pajamas and a blanket. When I get him in the morning the blanket is off to the side so I have been putting socks on him. He also has one piece pajamas that he sleeps in.

I think it's time to get rid of the sack!

You're fine to let her have a blanket. My son has been sleeping with a blanket since he was 4 months old and now we use the comforter that comes with the bedding kit. Just make sure you keep an extra eye on her around the time of her vaccines if you are choosing to vaccinate. It sets them back in their skills.

Carters has great one piece sleeper PJ's with feet. On the really cold nights we put a onesie on underneath. My son (now 18 months) has slept with a blanket for a long time. Most of the time he pulls it off and just snuggles with it, but it's safe at this age to use one. She'll be warm in the sleeper PJ's.

Check out Costco. It is fall and they have their Carters fleece footie pajamas for around $8. They are nice and warm and can't be kicked off or tangled in. We used them last year and have already bought some new ones for this year, they are great! Your daughter is also old enough to introduce a blanket. Sometimes my daughter kicks it off, but sometimes I go in and she has curled up in it. It can't hurt at this age.

Hi,

I have a 15mon old as well, and when its cool out, I have him sleep in a onesie and a Carters fleece sleeper (you know-feet pajamas). If its going to be really cold I will put socks on him too. This way he stays cozy and I dont have to worry as much on those cold nights if he kicks his blanket off.

I remember last winter, when my son was just over a year, we layered his clothing. I put him in some thermals, or a 2-piece cotton pj set, socks, and then a thick one-piece footed sleeper. No problems. Kids usually don't keep a blanket on for several years. Even if their head & hands feel cold, they're usually fine as long as their feet are covered. We tried the 2-piece pajamas but he kept "messing around" down in his diaper & then we'd have midnight wake up sessions because he would pee out of his diaper. I'm sticking with the 1-piece pj's for awhile!!

Try not to use a heavy sleeper because they get extra hot and they can't tell us. Just get a cotton or cotton terry cloth one piece with legs but without feet for sleeping and get a medium weight cotton blanket (for babies) and start putting the blanket on her lower half, waist down and see how she does with that. I wouldn't tuck anything in or pull the blanket up past her waist. She may kick the blanket around or sleep perfectly sound with it. You will have to see how she does. At first I had to pull the blanket back up to my son's waist once during the night for a few weeks, but after that he was fine. Good luck going back to work!!

There are few things cuter than a toddler in their footsie pjs :-) My girls wore footsies for years, until they were at least 6. They had light blankets, or a flannel top sheet, too, but the footsies were the key to a warm night's sleep.

My son is almost 23 months old and has never slept with a blanket. He hates them, and in his sleep, usually kicks them off. I tried for a long time to get him to sleep with a blanket when we lived back East in the COLD, but there would be times he would wake up as soon as I put the blanket on him! So, now he sleeps in short sleeved jammies in the summer (with pants/socks or shorts) and long sleeved footed jammies in the cooler/colder weather. Blankets aren't necessarily the answer to staying warm. I think it's more to make US feel better :)

My son was born June 2007 and we've had him in footsie pjs since 12 months. We put him down with a blanket though he usually ends up curled on TOP of the blanket. The pjs keep him nice and toasty and I have peace of mind throughout the nice that he's warm enough. We also shopped Costco for their Carter's jammies and because they are designed to be tighter around the limbs, they won't tangle him up as the sleep sac did.

As an aside, my hubby and I got a space heater (after checking with our pediatrician) last winter and set the thermostat on the space heater at a constant comfortable temp. We did need to use the humidifier more because if that, but I'd rather heat the baby's room than the whole house! Just remember that she is as comfortable or uncomfortable as yourself, so when you find that you need to bundle up before bed, she probably does, too. Best of luck finding the right thing!

Hello-
When it gets cold, I put my kids (twins) in 2 sets of pj's.

We started this when they were a bit over a year (they were born in August) and it continues even now at 5 years old. Cotton 2 piece top/bottom set, then a footed fleecy set on top. Sometimes when it is really cold, I will make them wear an undershirt. If my daughter wants to wear a nightgown, she will wear the set of cotton top/bottom underneath, then the nightgown on top and maybe a fleece button down top.

We do not use the heater at night, even during the winter. This way I know they are warm, even if they kick the blankets off.

Good luck

My baby girl is almost 8 months and has never gone to bed with a blanket either--always a sleep sack. I am planning on continuing with the sleep sacks till she's too big for them! I like that they keep the temperature the same for them in there and that they can't kick them off. We've used the light-weight one in summer and thicker one when the weather is cool. We are due for the next size up soon. I remember when she was tiny in it!

If you do get a blanket, often throws are cheaper than crib blankets, and essentially the same size, plus they come in a lot of colors. Just get one without fringe!

I don't think blankets work all that great in cribs, chances are it will get kicked off and serve no purpose. I don't think I ever used one with my kids until the hit the bed. Depending on the weather, I either used cozy footed PJs or a sleep sack. But if your daughter's not doing well in hers, I suggest you just use footie PJs.

Hi H.,

One Step makes a sleep sac with legs. My friend told me that they are on back order on their website, but they make a great investment for the winter. The idea is really great if your daughter is getting tangled up a bit in the normal sac. I too agree on the layering effect. Start with light weight cotton PJ's and finish off with the heavier footed PJ's. My 9 month old son sleeps with a blanket just fine. When I started putting a blanket on him, I put it on from the waist down and he did fine. Now I can cover him up and he pretty much stays covered all night. Good luck and stay warm this winter.

I have the same advice....a onesie under the feety jammies. As one mom said, there's nothing cuter than a kid in feety jammies! My 3 yr old is now in the bottom bunk & under the covers (literally under them at times!) so no more feety jammies:(. But when he was in the crib, I also got a fitted flannel sheet so that when I put him in bed he was on the warm flannel sheet instead of the cool percale/cotton sheet. Since we don't have central heating in our house, I had flannel crib sheets for both my boys & still do on their bunk beds. I know I found the flannel crib sheets at Babies R Us but you may also be able to find them at Target. Hope this helps!

Hello H.,
What I use in teh middle of winter is the footed fleecy type pajamas. I like them becuase when they kick the blankets off they dont get cold. that and I dont have to worry about them staying warm and covered in teh middle of the night. my little one has an attachment to her blanky but trying to keep them covered in teh middle of the night is impossible unless you are up all night. Also alot of times i put socks on their feet under the footed pajamas. hope this helps.

Hello,

I had twins in Sept. 07. I had them in light weight shorts and t-shirt during the summer. But they always kicked off their blanket. Now it is warm when they go to bed but I found they were cold in the middle of the night and they would wake up. So, I have been putting them in one piece PJ (the ones with the zipper and feet). They stay warm in the middle of the night (even if they kicked off the blankets) and they are no longer waking up.

Good Luck

Hi H., we had used the thick flanel foot PJ's for my son all winter. It seemed to keep him plenty warm. We would put him down with a light to medium blanket over him, but since he never kept it on him, we also set a portable space heater in his room that we could set the thermostat. So it nevr got below the right tempature in the room. We also always checked on him, and the temp of the room before we went to bed.

You can also consider something called Blankeaze from One Step Ahead -- it's a fabulos company! http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId...

It's a wearable blanket with legs (even very active sleepers can't kick this blanket off)! Twist-proof Blankeaze provides all the warmth and safety of a sleeping sack, but also provides greater mobility — a must for older or active babies. Slips easily over pajamas

Godd luck :0)
