This is totally embarassing, but I don't know what else to do. Over the last few months I have developed a mustache. I have no idea what to do about it. (waxing, tweezing, bleaching, etc...) I don't even know where I would look for products in a drug store about this problem. Please help this totally ignorant mom.

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the moms that gave me great advice. I am taking it all under consideration and at least have a feeling of what to look for at the store. Thank you.

I go to a threader for my upper lip and my eyebrows. I go every three months and it cost me $12.00 for both. I tip $5.00. I love it because it makes my eyebrows nice and arched and it makes my eyes look big. I love it.

1st, you might want to see your GYN or family MD & have your hormone levels checked. A change in the testosterone/estrogen ratio as well as changes in the thyroid hormones are two potential reasons to develop facial hair in a relatively short amount of time.

2nd, you can find waxes & bleaches formulated for the face in the aisle with the hair removal products. Tweezing tends to make the hairs grow longer & thicker because of the damage caused to the hair follicle, and shaving would leave stubble & well as the potential for nicks/cuts. Another option is go to a salon that provides waxing or threading services & have your upper lip worked on. Lastly, electrolysis is also a good option that although costly, is relatively permanent, as the hair becomes sparser & thinner with each treatment.

HTH! Good luck.

Ok so first Hi my name is A. I live in Oak Lawn.I work for a salon that offers electrolosis. Its the only permanent form of hair removal out there.I would be more than happy to either forward the info to you or you can check out our website.Studio21salonandayspa.com.Now please keep in mind that you do not want to shave the area, also tweezing can become very tedious.I would suggest waxing if you aren't to keen on the idea of having treatments.Good luck and if you need me I am always here.

Go to a salon and have it waxed. I would not recommend you trying to buy a home wax kit if you are not experienced doing it. I have been waxing since I was a teenager (brows, lip, sometimes bikini). Over the years, the hair has grown back finer and taken longer to grow in. I would not recommend tweezing because if there is alot of hair, it will take forever and hurt alot! Most any salon should do waxing, and it isn't that expensive. I am a hairstylist that also does waxing, so if you can't find anywhere, I would be happy to do this for you!

Yes you could spend money on the professionals and have it lasered and bleached and threaded, etc. But it's really easy.

Step One: Go to CVS/Walgreens

Step Two: Get the "Surgi Facial Wax"

Step Three: Go home and wait until the kids are in bed.

Step Four: Stick in the Microwave. Wait until it's not too hot.

Step Five: Use the wooden stick to apply to the hairy area.

Step Six: Wait until it cools and the edges are hardened a bit and rip it off. (Try not to squeal too loudly and wake the kids.)

Repeat Steps 4 - 6 in three to four weeks.

Good Luck!

i've basically had a slight mustache all of my life (i'm 24 now) and i used to use wax, which really hurt...when i started selling avon i discovered that their facial hair remover cream is excellent...that's all i use now...it can vary in price but it is so worth it...you leave it on for a few mins and just wipe it off...the hair stays off for a while so i don't have to do it as often...hope this helps! i cant think of the exact name at the moment but it is for the face and it comes in sort of a pen shaped tube...good luck!

How bout using a nose hair trimmer? It's a small tool and it won't get close enough to where your actually shaving your hair in fear of having it grow back thicker. Its basically trimming it down so as it does not look so thick and/or dark.

I use "Sally Hansen" hair remover wax strip kit. You can get it at Wal-Mart or Ulta-3. I'm sure other places carry it too.
This is the ONLY thing that totally removes hair for any length of time. I use it for my eyebrows, upper lip, bikini area & under the arms.
I'm not going to lie to you though. Out of ANY area that I've ever waxed, the upper lip hurts the worst! You do get used to it after a while. The more you wax, the less the hair comes back.
They give you some oil in the kit for after you've waxed the area. I use lotion instead of the oil. I've found that for my skin, the oil makes me break out. It might not for you. You would have to try it to find out.
Another word of advice is to wax on a Friday night if you work during the week. If you have any skin irritations, they should be gone by Monday morning.
Always, Always, Always wax at night. NEVER in the morning!!
Your skin gets all red and stays like that for quite a few hours and it doesn't look too hot. If you have a special occasion to go to, wax at least 2 to 3 days before the occasion just to make sure you don't have any skin irritations.
If your skin really bothers you after you've waxed and feels like it's on fire, put an ice cube in a washcloth and keep it on periodically. It does help.
You can also go to a salon and have it done for you. Certain places have a threader, but I've found that this hurts worse than waxing and if you're on a budget, like me, waxing at home is by far the most inexpensive way to go.
You pay about $7 for the whole box and this usually lasts about a year, unless you're waxing other areas too.
GOOD LUCK!!

I think waxing is best and you can do it yourself, at home, without much cost or inconvenience. Go to Sally Beauty supply and get one of the jars that doesn't use the muslin/cotton strips. You put the jar in the microwave for 30 second increments until melted. Then give it a few minuets to cool off - but still fluid. You may want to try on your hand first to make sure it is not too hot. You take a popcicle stick and dip it in the jar and put it on. It is helpful to do it in sections. Wait about a minute and then rip -ouch. Actually it doesn't hurt that bad but it does sting a bit at first. It will make your skin red for about an hour or so after (just like it would at a salon) so best to do it at night before you go to bed. Warning, your upper lip will feel really weird for a day or two after from not having any hair there. One other comment, have you changed birth control pills recently? That might be causing the hair growth?

Ahh, the bain of my existence!

As someone who has tried every possible hair removal system that exists since the age of 11, I can tell you that the only thing that will work is getting lasered. Bleach yellows your skin after years of use and tweezing can cause ingrown hairs. Electrolysis is very time consuming and never did a thing for me other than make me that much poorer!

Laser hair removal is expensive, and it takes a while for it to work, but I found it a worthwhile investment, especially when you consider that long term use of anything else can damage your skin. Make sure you find someone reputable who uses the latest technology too. Older laser systems produce less results. Good luck!
